Premier League icon Olivier Giroud, 38, set for shock European transfer after Club World Cup exit
PREMIER LEAGUE icon Olivier Giroud is set for a shock transfer after LAFC were knocked out of the Club World Cup.
The veteran striker could be set to join the eighth club of his career.

Giroud only moved to MLS side LAFC last year and he has made 37 appearances, scoring five goals.
But he is now reportedly on the radar of a team back in his native France - Lille.
French outlet Foot Mercato report Lille are hopeful they can entice Giroud back to Ligue 1 - 13 years after he left.
However Giroud, 38, is under contract with LAFC until the end of the calendar year, and they have an option to extend his stay.
But Lille are in need of a striker with Jonathan David set to leave when his contract expires next week.
Former Arsenal star Chuba Akpom will also return to his parent club Ajax when his loan expires.
It is claimed sources close to Giroud believe he would be interested in the switch to Lille.
They are expected to offer the striker a one-year deal, with the option of an additional year.

Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season so would be able to offer Giroud Europa League football.
But they may not be able to compete with the £2.7million annual salary he earns in LA.
LAFC were knocked out of the Club World Cup after losing to Chelsea and ES Tunis before drawing 1-1 with Flamengo.

United will look to negotiate 'salary recovery' from loan deals for their players, but the clubs eyeing their individuals believe their bargaining power has been massively dented by the fact they clearly want those players off their books. Rashford wasn't included in matchday squads in the weeks leading up to his Villa loan last season. He saw his performances increase at Villa Park and he's made it clear that he wants to move to Barcelona, but their priority appears to be signing Nico Williams. Antony produced his best football for years when he moved to Real Betis, helping them reach the Europa Conference League final. He won individual accolades and the Spanish side are keen on having him on a permanent basis. Last term they paid 84 percent of his salary. Garnacho has been told he can find a new home - and then proceeded to put up a picture on social media of him in a rival shirt. Chelsea were previously linked with his services as were Napoli. Manchester bosses have continued to sign players on big wages over the past decade, which has backed them into a corner when it comes to offloading those who failed to deliver.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah believes hard work will pay off in long bid to find new club
The Ajax youth product made his breakthrough at Old Trafford, where he graduated from the academy and made 30 first-team appearances – a figure that would have been higher were it not for loans and injury. Fosu-Mensah suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a spell at Fulham in 2019, with another following in February 2021 on just his seventh league appearance for new club Bayer Leverkusen. Such issues, thankfully, seem in the past and now the 27-year-old is looking to kickstart his career after spending a season as a free agent. 'At this age it's quite early and I think quite strange for people. 'I know I've been working hard and hard work won't go unnoticed. That's what I believe. 'If you stay at home, you do nothing and then you think 'boom, OK, I'm going to go this club or that club', no, that's not how it works, that's not my mentality. It's definitely a fresh start and I've been working hard.' Fosu-Mensah's last competitive appearance came in April 2023 but he does not believe he will struggle to make a comeback, pointing to others forced out of the game for different reasons as well as his fitness regime. Fosu-Mensah was on the bench a handful of times and fit for all but three weeks of that campaign, with more jarring issues following last summer's release. 'There was a couple of situations with agents here and there, which was a bit of a mess,' he said. 'People were speaking on my name who I never even had contact with. 'I would say like 80 per cent of the agents who were approaching clubs and people I didn't even know, who I didn't even had contact with. I think that was a big mess.' There were some talks during the winter about moving to the Championship – 'some of them I was aware of, some of them I wasn't,' he admitted – before a beneficial five months with Ajax. Fosu-Mensah has followed that training time with their reserves and first team, including some behind-closed-doors games, with daily summer workouts as he seeks a return. The 27-year-old spoke after one such session alongside Brian Brobbey and Steven Bergwijn from his home in the Netherlands, where a framed United shirt reading 'Fosu-Mensah 51' takes pride of place. 'I'll always be a fan of United,' Fosu-Mensah said. 'Always. I came there when I was 16, I left when I was 23. I've had many nice moments, won a couple of trophies, especially in my first season. 'We all know United, we all know the history of United, we all know what United stands for. 'Even this last season the Premier League was difficult for them but they reached the Europa League final, so it's something in the DNA of the club that they always want to win trophies. It's a joke – Enzo Maresca unhappy at long delay in Chelsea-Benfica tie
Enzo Maresca labelled the decision to suspend Chelsea's Club World Cup last-16 tie with Benfica for two hours 'a joke' even as his side eventually ran out 4-1 winners. The tie took almost five hours to complete after the teams were forced inside, with the Blues 1-0 up with four minutes remaining thanks to Reece James' free-kick, due to 'the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium'. On the resumption, Angel Di Maria equalised with a controversial stoppage-time penalty to take the game to extra time, only for Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to seal Chelsea's win. Maresca, in his press conference, said of the long delay: 'I think it's a joke, to be honest. 'It's not football, it's completely something new, I struggle to understand. 'I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition. 'It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero. 'We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games, there is some problems for me personally. 'I'm talking as a manager because when you're two hours inside and you have to try to keep them (the players) in the game, they're speaking to their families outside for safety reasons, they're eating, they're playing, they're laughing, how can you keep them inside focused for two hours? It's a joke.' One of Maresca's players at least was able to make light of the delay, which saw the game finish at 1.40am UK time, with defender Trevoh Chalobah posting on social media: ' Game started Saturday and ended Sunday'. Players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break and Maresca told broadcaster DAZN: 'Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult. 'But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy.' Gianluca Prestianni saw red for Bruno Lage's men in extra time for a second yellow card as Chelsea booked their place against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals. The Blues could now come up against Palmeiras' Stamford Bridge-bound Estevao Willian, whose side defeated fellow Brazilian club Botafogo on Saturday.
