East Lothian nurse caught after police raid home with disturbing discovery
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An East Lothian nurse is facing a jail sentence after he was caught in possession of thousands of child abuse images - including victims as young as two-years-old. David Marsh had downloaded the shocking material depicting both male and female children from apps including Snapchat, WhatsApp and Kik messenger over a six year period. Marsh, 60, was also found in possession of several sexualised videos he had received from a vulnerable 12-year-old autistic child after making contact with her over the internet. The care home nurse, from Dunbar, East Lothian, admitted accessing the depraved material during a police interview but denied to officers to having a sexual interest in children. Marsh pleaded guilty to two offences involving child abuse committed between 2018 and 2024 when he appeared in the dock at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday. Prosecutor Matthew Miller told the court police raided Marsh's home after receiving intelligence that a Snapchat account accessing the illicit material had been traced to the property in June last year. The officers were allowed entry by a relative and Marsh was said to have arrived home a short time later at around 8 am on August 6 last year. Mr Miller said 'a number of mobile phones and devices were seized' during the raid and were later found to hold indecent images of children on them. The court was told four mobiles and an electronic tablet contained a total of 2448 images and videos with hundreds rated at Category A - the worst end of the spectrum. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox The fiscal depute said the total run time of the videos was more than four hours and the material involved the sexual abuse of children aged between two and 15-years-old. Mr Miller told the court officers also discovered Snapchat logs detailing the sexual contact Marsh had with a 12-year-old child who was described as being 'vulnerable' and suffering from autism. Marsh was subsequently found to be in possession of videos of the child engaging in solo sexual activity that she had sent him but he denied sending images of himself back to the victim. The court heard Marsh is a father of two and is employed as a nurse practitioner at a residential care home. Defence agent Steven Donald said he would reserve his mitigation to the sentencing hearing. Sheriff Fergus Thomson agreed to release Marsh on bail and placed him on the sex offenders register on an interim basis. The sheriff also said Marsh's name will be passed on to Scottish Ministers for inclusion on the list of those banned from working with children and vulnerable adults in the future. Marsh pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children at his home between October 7, 2018 and October 6 last year. He also admitted to intentionally causing a child, who had not attained the age of 13, to participate in sexual activity and did request images of her masturbating and send them to him between January 3 and October 28, 2021.

Dog walker kept over 20 animals in 'one of the worst homes ever seen' by SSPCA
An Aberdeenshire dog walker has been sentenced for keeping over 20 animals in one of the worst homes ever seen by the Scottish SPCA. Sarah Cummines, who pleaded guilty to neglect, was found to be keeping dogs, cats, and a ferret in 'squalid' conditions with no access to food or water. The dog walker and pet sitter was visited by inspectors after a complaint was made about potential neglect at her property. On arrival, nine adult dogs, nine puppies, four adult cats, five kittens, and a ferret were found living among piles of waste, excrement, and debris. The animals had no access to clean resting areas, food, or water, with the smell described as 'overwhelming' and the interior said to be 'truly appalling'. The floor of the property was completely obscured by a foot-high layer of rubbish, excrement, and discarded items. Cats were found living on top of kitchen cabinets among faeces, while the kitchen sink was described as full of rubbish. An SSPCA inspector reported: 'One small dog was seen climbing over piles of waste and jumping between appliances to avoid touching the floor. 'All the animals were frightened, and the cats were visibly nervous. This was no environment for any animal or human.' The investigation also found that the animals were navigating over old dog crates and hazardous items to reach basic spaces like the kitchen or doors. Evidence of chewed beds and distressed behaviours indicated prolonged suffering and stress. The inspector added: 'We were horrified not only by the condition of the animals but by the state of the entire home. The bedroom was one of the worst rooms we've encountered, and a box room was barricaded shut inside, a ferret had escaped its cage. 'These were among the worst living conditions for both animals and a human we have ever witnessed.' Despite being offered help and the opportunity to give up the animals voluntarily, Cummines refused. The animals were subsequently removed for their welfare. Cummines, of Aberdeenshire, appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court on June 23, where she pled guilty to failing to meet the basic welfare needs of dogs, cats, and a ferret in her care. Cummines admitted to multiple counts of animal neglect and given a disqualification order imposed for five years relating to dogs, cats and other household pets. She was given a community payback order with supervision for one year. A spokesperson for the Scottish SPCA added: 'We welcome the court's decision today. No animal should be forced to live in such filth and fear. This outcome sends a clear message that neglecting the welfare of animals will not be tolerated in Scotland.' The Scottish SPCA encourages anyone concerned about the welfare of an animal or if they suspect signs of animal neglect to contact their confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
