Over 25,000 people apply to Qatar 2025 FIFA Volunteer Programme
More than 25,000 Qatar-based applicants have shown interest in being part of delivering the two events, which Qatar is set to host in November and December of this year. When the recruitment process is over, a total of 4,000 volunteers will be recruited to support across 20 different functional areas.
'The Qatar 2025 FIFA Volunteer Programme builds on the tremendous legacy created in Qatar through the hosting of mega sporting events. The success of each of these tournaments has been possible because of the devotion and tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers,' said Haya Al Noaimi, LOC Administration Executive Director.
Andhini Rahmayani, 25 years old, moved to Qatar four years ago from Indonesia to work in the country's growing hospitality sector. Her decision to apply as a volunteer came from her desire to use her professional skillset in a manner that would give back to the community.
'I look forward to using my skills in customer service to support guests and fans throughout these tournaments. I can't wait to meet new people and learn about their cultures and be part of the U-17 World Cup that will feature my home country of Indonesia,' said Rahmayani.
A total of 126 nationalities residing in Qatar were represented in the applicants' base, ranging in age from 18 to 76. Once interviews are complete, selected candidates will receive role offers beginning in August.
Fouad Redouan works full-time as a chef in a Moroccan restaurant in Doha, Qatar. His decision to volunteer comes from a humanitarian perspective, driven by a desire to give back to the community.
'Volunteering is a human expression. Everyone loves to help and be part of the community in which they live. What we witnessed in Qatar 2022 was beautiful. It inspired everyone to be a part of it, and to contribute to the success of these events here in Qatar, and that's what I hope I can do,' said Redouan.
The FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ will take place from 3-27 November at the state-of-the-art Aspire Zone complex and will be the first FIFA competition to feature 48 teams. The 2025 edition will be the first of five consecutive tournaments Qatar is hosting through to 2029.
Meanwhile, the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025™ will run from 1-18 December across six Qatar 2022 venues and feature 16 Arab teams who will vie for the title of regional champion. In addition to this year's edition, Qatar will be hosting the tournament again in 2029 and 2033.

A group of Afghan refugee players participated in the first of three global talent identification camps in Sydney last month as part of efforts to build a 23-player women's squad for friendly internationals this year, world football body FIFA has revealed. Many players from the women's national team fled the country over fears of persecution after the Taliban took control of the government in 2021, and they have been fighting for their right to play internationally again after being excluded from World Cup qualifying events. The Taliban-controlled Afghan Football Federation has banned women's sports, shattering the dreams of the team, which requires recognition by a national federation to compete internationally. The Taliban says it respects women's rights in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic law and local customs, and that internal matters should be addressed locally. There was a ray of hope in May, however, after FIFA approved the creation of an Afghan women's refugee team and named Pauline Hamill as coach, with the former Scotland international holding the team's first talent camp from July 23 to 29 in Sydney. 'It's great to have the players here,' 53-year-old Hamill told the FIFA website on Friday. 'Now we have the chance to work with them and try to evaluate their performance, and they can all come together again in an environment that they always wanted to be a part of. 'I think it's an incredible project. It's given the players the chance to perform and play together again. I think they'll create memories that they otherwise wouldn't have created, and making memories with your team is really special.' FIFA is hopeful that players from the trials can take part in approved friendlies later this year, thereby returning Afghan women's football to the international stage. It said it would also provide equipment and help them build connections with local clubs and enable access to counselling, media and social media training, as well as identify potential educational pathways and opportunities within the sport. 'I am confident that we have taken an important step in the right direction by offering these women the opportunity to play internationally while prioritising their safety and wellbeing…,' FIFA President Gianni Infantino said. 'We are proud of this, of having brought to life this pilot project, and our aim is to expand it in the future to include women from other countries as well.' Nilab, one of the players at July's camp, said football has helped her a lot. 'My goal is not just about me,' Nilab said. 'It's about all Afghanistan, especially women and girls. This project helps and supports me, and teaches us how we can help each other and how to represent Afghanistan.'

FIFA 2026 World Cup draw set to be held in Las Vegas in December
Las Vegas is set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, with reports that the ceremony will be held on Friday, December 5. The city, based in Nevada, United States, was selected over cities in co-host nations Canada and Mexico. FIFA officials have not themselves confirmed the date or site but reports are now widespread for the December date in Vegas. For the first time, the competition will take place in three countries and has been expanded to feature 48 nations, as opposed to the traditional 32. Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium was rejected as a host venue. Eleven US cities/venues were selected, along with three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey) and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver). The US sites are divided into three regions. New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Atlanta are a part of the eastern region, Kansas City, Dallas and Houston comprise a part of the central region, while Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area make up three of the four cities in the western region. The draw will reveal the dozen groups with four nations per group. Mexico (Group A), Canada (Group B) and the United States (Group D) have already been selected for their groups. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will host the final match on July 19, 2026. Las Vegas hosted the draw in 1994, the last time the World Cup was held in the United States. The modern Sphere, which has a seating capacity of at least 17,000 people and opened in 2023, is the frontrunning venue to host the evening. Although hosting the draw for the 1994 edition, Vegas was not a host city for any matches, a situation that is also the case for next year's event. Qualifying for the tournament is set to be concluded by the end of March 2026, following an intercontinental playoff.
