The man widely accused of being at the heart of police infiltration and capture of law enforcement apparatus in South Africa, Vusumuzi 'Cat' Matlala was this week found with a mobile phone during a raid at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria.
On Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday, Correctional Services national commissioner, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, led an extensive raid and search operation at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria, including its high-security C-Max section.
The raid on Tuesday and Wednesday was a follow-up to another blitz conducted on Sunday, where officials found Matlala with a mobile phone.
'Cat Matlala is at C-Max correction facility because of a classification. He is classified as high-risk but also secondly, we continue to do searches, especially these types of searches that we did last night," Thobakgale told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika on Wednesday morning.
'On Sunday morning, we did a surprise search and we found a cellphone in his possession.'
At the time, Matlala was in a section of the vast prison called 'local' which houses medium to low-risk individuals.
'He was at medium local,' said Thobakgale.
The Department of Correctional Services said investigations are underway to ascertain how Matlala managed to have the mobile device in the prison.
The gadget has since been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
'When we find objects like cellphones in cases that are high-risk like this one, we hand the object over to the South African Police Service so that is what we have done immediately, on the same day,' said Thobakgale.
'After uncovering the device, we contacted SAPS and they came and collected it.'
IOL has reported that it has since emerged that former police minister, Bheki Cele, is now implicated in the police corruption scandal involving Matlala.

Kenny Kunene was present during DJ Sumbody suspect's arrest
Businessman and Patriotic Alliance deputy president Kenny Kunene has confirmed that he was present during the arrest of a suspect linked to the deaths of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards. The DJ was gunned down in a hail of bullets while driving through Woodmead, Johannesburg, in November 2022. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Kenny Kunene was at Katiso 'KT' Molefe's home, one of the accused, during his arrest. Speaking to eNCA on Tuesday afternoon, Kunene claimed he was accompanying young journalists to an arranged interview at Molefe's house. He said his contact organised the interview opportunity, and he accompanied the journalists to the location. Kunene denied having any personal relationship with Molefe or having spoken with him before. He insisted his role was strictly professional and limited to helping the journalists with access to an interview. Watch here: Four suspects linked to DJ Sumbody's 2022 murder were arrested in Gauteng on Monday. SAPS revealed that three suspects are believed to be hitmen hired to carry out the fatal ambush. The fourth suspect is allegedly the mastermind who planned and ordered DJ Sumbody's assassination. 'The [police] team arrested four men between the ages of 45 and 60 in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Gauteng organised crime detectives worked on the case and later roped in the SAPS political killings task team to assist,' said National police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe. The weapon allegedly used was seized and linked to other high-profile murder cases. The four suspects face three murder charges tied to the 2022 ambush that killed DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. They appeared briefly in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court today. The case was postponed to 29 July 2025 for further investigation and verification of new forensic evidence. EFF praises arrest of suspects in DJ Sumbody's murder case
The Alexandra Magistrate's Court has postponed the murder case against DJ Sumbody after four men who were arrested on Monday appeared in court on Tuesday. Image: X The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has welcomed the arrest of the four suspects linked to the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. This comes after the suspected killers appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, following their arrest on Monday afternoon. Their matter was subsequently postponed to July 29 with reports that one of the suspects is a known businessman, identified as Katiso Molefe, while the rest are alleged hitmen. The police further allege that the suspects are linked to 10 other high-profile cases, including the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. "The [police] team arrested four men between the ages of 45 and 60 in connection with the murder of a popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody. Michael Pule, Floyd Mabusela, Mosa Kekana, and businessman Katiso Molefe, who is the alleged mastermind, are expected back in court on July 29," said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. Mathe confirmed that the suspects, aged between 45 and 60, were apprehended on Monday afternoon. The EFF, in a statement, welcomed the arrest, with the party stating: "We commend Gauteng's organised crime detectives and the Political Killings Task Team for their determined and methodical investigation, which has now resulted in the arrest of three suspected hitmen and the individual believed to have ordered the killing. A firearm recovered during the operation has been linked to multiple murders, highlighting the systemic nature of this violence and the importance of specialised units to combat it." In 2022, the gruesome murder of the talented artist sent shockwaves across the country after he was shot dead while driving in Woodmead. According to Mathe, this discovery suggests that the individuals involved in DJ Sumbody's death may be part of a larger network responsible for orchestrating and carrying out violent crimes in and around Johannesburg. She added that Swart, an engineer from Vereeniging, was gunned down outside his workplace in what appears to have been a case of mistaken identity. He was shot 23 times by an alleged hitman who reportedly mistook him for another employee. "We can confirm that four suspects who were arrested on Monday on the murder of DJ Sumbody have appeared today. They have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the possession of illegal firearms, as well as ammunition. What is interesting is that the same suspects who were arrested were wanted for the murder of 30-year-old Armand Swart," she stated. While the police have not yet disclosed the full details regarding the motive, IOL has reported that those close to the investigation suggest that the killing may have stemmed from disputes involving business dealings or personal rivalries.
