
Fred Anzevino, founder of Theo Ubique Theatre, dies at 67
Anzevino's death was announced Monday night by the board of directors of the Theo Ubique Theatre Company, the company he founded. He had been in the midst of rehearsals for his next show.
Anzevino was the passion behind the strangely named Theo Ubique, a Greek-Latin hybrid meaning 'God present in everything,' a theater company he founded in 1997. He said at the time that he had grown weary of the increased commercialization of musical theater even though he had been a busy touring actor.
'Theater heals through honesty, concentration, simplicity, awe,' he told the Tribune. 'If one can evoke elements of the spiritual on stage, it can heal all people.'
He relished staging Broadway musicals in a tiny space. First at the Heartland Studio Theatre, then at the 60-seat No Exit Cafe, both in in Rogers Park, and finally in a custom-designed theater on the Howard Street border of Chicago and Evanston, Anzevino worked his magic through countless jewel-box productions of titles from Stephen Sondheim's 'A Little Night Music' to 'Pump Boys and Dinettes.' Several Chicago companies went on to produce so-called micro musicals in the city, but Anzevino was the first to do so with equal measures of integrity and success.
His secret sauce was his ability to spot, and then snag, formidable young talent. And then figure out how to make them shine.
His musicals often were cast with recent graduates of the city's leading musical-theater training programs, thrusting forward the careers of young graduates, many of whom went on to major careers. He also was able to forge relationships with two highly talented musical directors in Austin Cook and then Jeremy Ramey; Ramey worked with Anzevino on 42 shows over a 12-year period and said Monday night that he was 'heartbroken and devastated.'
'Fred was an institution and a teddy bear, all at once,' said Sawyer Smith, an actor currently working at the Signature Theatre near Washington, D.C. 'I remember meeting him for the first time. I was so nervous. All of the actors I admired had cut their teeth at Theo with Fred. He saw you intimately and knew how to get you to dig deeper. Once you were under his wing, he was your biggest champion. He fought for who he believed in, for what he believed in.'
'What Fred did for storefront musical theater in this city will always be unmatched,' said Christopher Chase Carter, a choreographer who worked at Theo Ubique. 'He set the standard.'
Born in 1957 in Providence, Rhode Island, Anzevino showed early promise as a baseball player but instead studied theater at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, at Rhode Island College and at George Washington University. As a young actor, he was part of the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical 'Big River.'
Although the cause of his death has not yet been determined, Anzevino was open about being an AIDS survivor and was a man who long had lived with HIV. He considered himself deeply fortunate, and it was that seriousness of purpose that informed both his work with collaborators and his deeply emotional productions.
At its creative peak between about 2008 and 2016, Theo Ubique shows dominated local awards ceremonies. Memorable productions also include stagings of 'Jacques Brel's Lonesome Losers of the Night,' 'Evita,' 'Chess,' 'Cabaret' and 'The Light in the Piazza.' Anzevino was not daunted by complexity nor by the seeming size of shows; everything, he believed, could be staged intimately, if you had talented collaborators. He staged 'Cats' in a room that many would have felt was barely big enough for a litter box.
With help from supporters and Evanston officials, Anzevino managed to raise enough funds for a new theater space which opened on Howard Street in 2018, just managing to get on its feet prior to the pandemic. Thereafter, Anzevino, anxious to give younger artists opportunities and fearing his generation was becoming out of step, stepped back some. But at the time of his death, he remained Theo's artistic director and was in rehearsal for 'Diana: The Musical,' which he was co-directing with long-time collaborator Brenda Didier.
Theo board chair Stephanie Servos said Monday night that the company's board of directors were devastated by Anzevino's death and that she hoped the company would be able to rename the theater in Anzevino's honor. 'Fred was like a father to me,' Servos said.
'The larger the theater gets, the more external problems there are and the more difficult it becomes for honesty to appear,' Anzevino told the Tribune in 1997. 'Spiritual and holy theater can only be performed in small and dingy spaces.'
Dingy disappeared over the succeeding years. But never the small, and never Anzevino's insistence that his art, and his artists, had sacred purpose.
Survivors include a sister, Joann Benedetti.
'He worried so much about me even though he was my little brother, Benedetti said Tuesday. 'Fred was just a very humble person. I'm going to miss him so much.'
Plans for a memorial service are pending.

At his first Comic-Con, George Lucas previews Lucas Museum of Narrative Art
SAN DIEGO – George Lucas has amassed 50 years of cool stuff, and now he's going to have a place to put it. Even better, you can see it, too. Original sketches, paintings and assorted illustrations from the 'Star Wars' creator's personal collection – plus quite a bit representing that galaxy far, far away − will be on display at the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The building is under construction in Los Angeles' Exposition Park, will open in 2026, and is dedicated to 'cultural fantasy,' Lucas said. The Hollywood icon was joined on Sunday, July 27, at a Comic-Con panel about the museum by 'Star Wars' illustrator and production designer Doug Chiang, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and moderator Queen Latifah. It was Lucas' first time at Comic-Con in his legendary career, earning a standing ovation from the 6,500 faithful in Hall H. Some of the works in the museum include the first Flash Gordon character drawing from 1934 ('You can see all the smudges,' Latifah noted), original 'Peanuts' sketches from the 1950s and '60s, and an original drawing of the 'Iron Man' No. 1 cover from 1968. 'Star Wars' fans will find plenty to love, too, including actual vehicles like a Naboo starfighter from Lucas' prequel movies and speeder bikes from 'Return of the Jedi.' And here's another fun fact: The museum architecture contains no right angles, only curves. Lucas, 81, has collected 40,000 pieces of art in the past five decades. 'It occurred to me: What am I going to do with it all?' he said. 'I'm not going to sell it. I could never do that. It's not what art is.' He called the museum a "temple to the people's art" and discussed that art is "a personal thing" to us, "not how much it cost or what celebrity did it or whatever. And I don't think it's anything that anybody else can tell you, 'That's art, that's not art.' It doesn't work that way. If you have an emotional connection, then it's art. "I've discovered just from my experience of making movies and things that other people's opinions don't mean much." Del Toro, a board member for the Lucas museum, appreciates "the pieces we have that celebrate freedom from anarchy," he said. "Comics were the first one to punch Nazis before movies." And with art, "we're not eternal. But what we hold and cherish is." The recent fires made del Toro worry a little about his own large collection. "I draw the line at three houses full of stuff," he said with a laugh. "Now that this museum exists, maybe some of it goes there." And the Lucas museum very much reflects the man whose name is on it, said Chiang, whose own work will be on display. "George leads from the heart, and this museum is him. My hope is that it will inspire the next Norman Rockwell or Frank Frazetta."

Tracee Ellis Ross is reflecting on Oprah's comments about her ongoing single status. The moment came in an episode of Tracee's new series, Solo Traveling With Tracee Ellis Ross, which finds the Emmy-winning actor exploring the joys of the world as a single and childless woman. Reflecting on the freedom of solo travel, Tracee said, "So much of what traveling is about, is for me, not waiting for something in order to walk towards my life, in order to be in my life, in order to experience my life. I think that was why I took my first trip solo. And I know that in some ways — I mean, Oprah said it. She said that I'm the poster child for singledom. I don't want to be that." Instead, Tracee prefers to reframe the conversation as someone living on their own terms and not waiting for traditional things to add value and meaning to their life. "I want to be the poster child for being an inhabitant in your own skin," Tracee said. "For living in your own skin." Although some might see being single and childless at an older age as a negative, Tracee, 52, says it has afforded her a freedom and an experience that she might not have otherwise had. "Yes, I am a single Black woman who does not have children, but not having a relationship — long, long relationships — not having children has allowed me to explore things of my own humanity," she reflected. "It has deposited me here at 52 in an extraordinary experience that is filled with joy, loneliness, grief, exuberance, delight, like, literally all of it. And I feel available to it." While Tracee didn't specify when Oprah's comments occurred, they appear to be from a 2020 interview on her Your Live in Focus series, where Oprah told Tracee how many single women view her as "an example of what being an unmarried woman could and should look like." When asked if she ever imagined playing that role, Tracee laughed, "No. I, like many of us, was taught to grow up dreaming of my wedding, not of my life." She added, "I spent many years dreaming of my wedding, and also, waiting to be chosen. Well, here's the thing. I'm the chooser. And I can choose to get married if I want to, but in the meantime, I am choicefully single, happily, gloriously single." She repeated that message in a 2021 interview with Harper's Bazaar: "People are like, 'You're the poster child for being single.' And I was like, 'Great.' But what I would prefer is that I'm the poster child for living my life on my terms. And that there's a version of that for everyone. I don't live my life for other people. Beyoncé surprises fans with Destiny's Child reunion at final Cowboy Carter show
Beyoncé brought the house down Saturday night at the final show of her Cowboy Carter tour in Las Vegas, surprising fans with a Destiny's Child reunion. The Grammy-winning artist closed out her tour Saturday night with the trio performing together for the first time in seven years. Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Beyoncé stepped out in matching gold ensembles, thrilling the crowd with hits like "Lose My Breath," "Bootylicious," and Beyoncé's own song, "Energy." The chart-topping group went their separate ways in 2006 to pursue solo careers but have reunited a few times since, including during Beyoncé's halftime performance at the 2013 Super Bowl and at her 2018 Coachella headlining set, the latter of which was the most recent public performance together. After the show, Beyoncé shared photos of the reunion on Instagram, with fans flooding the comments to express their excitement and disbelief about the rare occasion. Following the Destiny's Child performance, Beyoncé's daughter, 13-year-old Blue Ivy, joined her mother onstage. Blue has been a regular dancer throughout the tour, making her own mark on the show.
