Tesco's birthday cake sandwich is leaving shoppers divided

Leader Live10 hours ago
A new birthday cake sandwich has been spotted in the supermarket, with the word spreading across the internet.
It comes just weeks after a similar "strange" strawberries and cream sandwich from M&S also made headlines.
The new Tesco cake is causing a divide, with some shoppers loving it, but others not so much.
A photo was shared of the new Tesco sandwich on the Money Saving Central Facebook group, which has already received hundreds of comments.
One person said: "Absolutely not, just when strawberries and cream couldn't get worse."
Another added: "Maybe if it was cake cut to look like a sandwich I'd have it but not if it's on bread. Yuck."
The sandwich has also been discussed on the Tesco page on Reddit.
One confused person said: "What am I actually looking at?"
Another described the sandwich as "utter filth", and another said it was "weird".
However, not everyone disagrees with the flavour, with some looking forward to trying it.
"This reminds me of when I tried sprinkles on buttered bread. Game changer," said one.
A second person said: "Is it just me who actually wants it."
Some shoppers also compared it to Fairy Bread, which is popular in Australia.
Often served at parties, it is sliced white bread spread with butter or margarine and covered with sprinkles.
The divide over Tesco's new sandwich comes after the M&S strawberries and cream sandwich made waves in the supermarket community.
The £2.80 'game-changing' limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry & Creme Sandwich was inspired by Japanese 'sweet sandos', or fruit sandwiches, M&S said.
It is filled with the fruit and light whipped cream cheese on fluffy, sweetened bread.

Many described the product as "weird", but many others enjoyed the creation.
M&S Food first sold freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s, and expanded sales with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s.
The retailer's food halls have sold four billion sandwiches to date.

I tried Tesco's new Birthday Cake sandwich

It comes just weeks after a similar "strange" strawberries and cream sandwich from M&S also made headlines. The new Tesco cake is causing a divide, with some shoppers loving it, but others not so much. So I thought I'd bite the birthday cake bullet and buy the new sarnie as part of my meal deal. The brioche-esque bread featured on the packaging had me hopeful that the sandwich would be a melt-in-the-mouth, Victoria sponge-esque treat. As a hint to what I was in store for, the packaging alluded to a sandwich filled with "full fat soft cheese, seedless strawberry jam, multi-coloured edible sugar decorations and vanilla frosting in brioche style white bread." There was a slight sugary-sweet aroma to the piece, and I decided it was time to dig into it. Biting into it was a weird experience; the bread was claggy with the jam and heavy with the filling of cheese and icing. I couldn't make heads or tails of it on first bite, to be honest. After eating some more of it, two more bites to be exact, my mind was made up - it was an absolute no from me. Call me a party pooper if you want, but this is one birthday cake that would ruin my celebration. At 515kcal for the sandwich, it packs a calorific punch, and to be honest, I'd rather use those on an actual cake - any actual cake. It just doesn't make sense, and it left me wondering one thing in particular. Why? Just, why?

Tesco's birthday cake sandwich launch divides opinion on social media

Tesco has launched a birthday cake sandwich, complete with strawberry jam, soft cheese, vanilla frosting and sprinkles – but the candle isn't included. The limited-edition sandwich, between slices of brioche-style white bread, contains 31.g of sugar – 35% of an adult's recommended daily intake – and will be on sale for £3 at 1,000 stores for four weeks. Videos of people trying out the sandwich have attracted tens of thousands of views on TikTok over the past 24 hours. Some Tesco customers expressed scepticism on Reddit. 'Birthday cake is not a flavour,' one said. 'It's not like everyone has the exact same cake for their birthday.' Another suggested that creating a birthday cake sandwich should be a criminal offence. 'The Earl of Sandwich did not intend this to happen,' one Reddit user wrote. 'Bet he's rolling in his grave.' The fourth Earl of Sandwich is said to have invented the sandwich in 1762 when he asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so that he did not have to leave the table where he was playing cards. Tesco said the 'soiree sandwich' was being released to mark the 30th anniversary of the Clubcard. TikTok users have suggested it reminds them of a jam sandwich. 'It tastes like that, but with a bit of cream,' one said. 'If you love a jam sandwich, it's literally that – but elevated,' said another. 'This is way better than I thought it would be.' It follows the release in June by Marks & Spencer of a strawberry and cream sandwich, nicknamed the 'strawberry sando'. Nutritional information for Tesco's sandwich shows that it contains 515 calories with 8.4g saturated fat: 42% of an adult's recommended daily intake. Despite being a 'dessert sandwich', it can be part of the Tesco meal deal for £4, alongside a drink and snack. Tesco's brand manager, Violaine Barthe, said: 'With 3.1 million sandwiches sold in Tesco each year, sandwiches make up a big proportion of Clubcard purchases and so there was only one way to celebrate Clubcard turning 30. 'The birthday cake Sandwich is a celebration not to be missed and we can't wait to hear the nation's feedback.'

We just tried Tesco's viral 'birthday cake' sandwich – and we have mixed thoughts

M&S no doubt started the latest food trend when it launched its viral strawberry and creme sando earlier this summer. Now, Tesco have unveiled its own version of the hybrid sweet treat: the birthday cake sandwich. Celebrating 30 years of the Tesco Clubcard, the limited-edition sandwich is available in more than 1,000 stores nationwide - but only until 31 August. M&S's sandwich became so popular it daily sold out in most stores across the UK, and there's similar hype mounting for Tesco's take. The idea of a sweet sandwich is derived from the Japanese fruit sando, a popular snack that includes fresh fruit, sliced white bread, and fresh whipped cream. This isn't the first time Tesco has nodded to the signature treat –14 years ago, the supermarket chain launched a strawberries and cream sandwich to mark Wimbledon. But its latest offering has a playful spin thanks to its strawberry jam and cream cheese filling with a colourful sprinkling of rainbow confetti. Better yet, it costs £3 and is included in Tesco's office-favourite meal deal (a main, side and drink for just £3.60). But is it a nostalgic homage to childhood birthday parties or a sickly addition to the meal deal line-up? Four of our team testers at IndyBest swapped their usual sarnie for the new birthday sando – here are our (mixed) thoughts.
