Tai Tokerau Leader Pita Tipene Announces Bid For Northland Regional Council - Te Raki Māori Constituency
Known for his longstanding commitment to whānau, hapū and iwi development across Tai Tokerau, Pita Tipene says the decision to stand reflects a continued desire to bring strategic, Māori-led solutions for environmental, economic and regional issues.
Pita has worked within the Northland Regional Council as part of Te Ruarangi - Māori and Council Working party for the past twelve years, most of that as co-chair, so is well acquainted with the workings of Council.
'It's time for bold, committed and unapologetic Māori leadership at the Council table — to protect and enhance our environment, support our Tai Tokerau communities, and hold our institutions accountable,' says Pita.
'Standing for the Te Raki Māori Constituency is a continuation of the work I've dedicated my life to — empowering and building resilient communities, protecting our environment, and ensuring Māori voices are heard where strategic decisions are made.'

This year has already been momentous for Pita having recently received the King's Service Order for services to Māori, as well as being awarded the Tai Tokerau Māori Business Leader Award in recognition of his work across multiple sectors and serving the people and indigenous communities globally.
Pita's candidacy is expected to resonate across Tai Tokerau, where he has served in key governance and leadership roles including Chair of the Waitangi National Trust, Chair of Te Pouahi o te Tai Tokerau (Māori Housing), Chair of the Motatau Marae and co-Chair of the Indigenous Peoples Economic and Trade Co-operation Arrangement, amongst other key governance roles while serving his people at local, regional, national and global levels.
Nominations for the Northland Regional Council elections are open and close on 1st August 2025. Voting packs will be delivered from Tuesday 9th September, with votes closing Saturday 11th October, 12pm. Official results will be announced on Friday 17th October 2025.

TEL Off-ramp To Pāpāmoa East Opening Early
Tauranga City Council is pleased to be opening the off-ramp from the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) to Pāpāmoa East at the end of August, months ahead of schedule. The Council has worked with the project contractor, Minister for Transport Chris Bishop, the New Zealand Transport Agency and local MP Tom Rutherford to make this a reality. The Pāpāmoa East Interchange is key to improving network connectivity for existing residents and will also enable ongoing residential and commercial development. "The opening of the Pāpāmoa East Interchange off-ramp by the end of August, which is nine months ahead of plan, is a great outcome for our people and will help ease traffic issues," says Mayor Mahé Drysdale. Meanwhile, Councillor Steve Morris adds that the rest of the interchange will be open and ready to use in early-2026, which will have 'a significant impact on improving traffic flows and ease of accessing the TEL from Pāpāmoa East". 'Mayor Drysdale worked with Minister Bishop to facilitate the early opening and I approached Tom Rutherford to ask for his help,' Steve says, 'and between us all, we've managed to get a great result for the community." "By working together, we have achieved a good, pragmatic outcome for our community, and I thank everyone for saying yes and getting this done," says Mahé. Mayor And Councillors Give Residential Ratepayers A Credit
Residential ratepayers in the New Plymouth District will get a credit of approximately $102 (some will get more, some less) applied to their rates bill this year. This decision made at a Council meeting today (22 July) was required following the discovery of an incorrect assumption about the average land value used in the rating model, which would have seen these rates increase to 12.8 per cent on average versus publicly shared average residential rate of 9.9 per cent. Legal advice indicates the rates are legally valid. Another error was also fixed today, with a minute corrected to include the correct wording relating to the restricted water flow charge. These changes follow urgent independent review called for by Mayor Neil Holdom combined with an internal review, following another administrative error relating to GST found in May. NPDC Chief Executive Gareth Green apologises for the errors. 'On behalf of the NPDC organisation, I wish to offer my sincere apologies to the Mayor and Councillors, and our entire community, for the failing of our systems and processes that led to these errors.' The overall rates increase for 2025/2026 is 9.1 per cent. What happens now? Rates bills for the first of four quarterly instalments are expected to be sent out at the end of this month as normal. The amount owed showing on the bill will reflect the resolution in adopting the Annual Plan, but an 'adjustment' or credit will be applied to each bill to reflect the decision made by the Council today (22 July). The adjustment will be spread across the year.

Specialist education workers strike nationwide over pay talks
The two-hour strike was co-ordinated by two unions – the Public Service Association (PSA) and NZEI Te Riu Roa – representing different groups of ,inistry staff. Although bargaining separately, both unions say their members are united in frustration over inadequate pay offers and deteriorating working conditions. Photo / Sarah Curtis The PSA, representing around 1500 members, includes staff working on national education programmes such as reform initiatives and emergency response. Their concerns centre on the ministry's attempt to remove flexible working provisions from their collective agreement and what they describe as a 'miserly' pay offer that fails to keep pace with the cost of living. NZEI Te Riu Roa represents about 800 field staff and service managers, including speech language therapists, early intervention teachers, psychologists, and advisers on deaf children. These workers say they are stretched thin, with children waiting too long for support due to chronic understaffing and excessive overtime. NZEI member Justine Blankenstein said the strike was a last resort. 'We're very sad that it's come to this, and we feel forced into it. Children are sitting on waiting lists for too long, staffing is inadequate, and we're doing too much overtime,' she said. 'We tried to negotiate our collective agreements, but the offer didn't address our issues – there was no new money for most of us.' She also pointed to the May Budget announcement, which allocated funding to some areas of learning support. 'NZEI has calculated that the Government would need to invest $2.5 billion over five years to fix the long-standing issues. The Budget delivered some changes, but it was done by cutting other specialist staff, like resource teachers for literacy and Māori,' Blankenstein said. From Wellington, PSA national secretary Fleur Fitzsimons said, 'The ministry is threatening flexible working arrangements by removing explicit commitments in the collective to allow members to work in a way which suits their family circumstances. This is the thin end of the wedge, reflecting this Government's hostility to what are modern workplace practices around the world.' 'We are between a rock and a hard place – trying to give tamariki the professional support they need while working under conditions that don't reflect the value of our roles,' the letter read. 'To fix this, we need fair working terms and conditions. This will help attract and retain great people to work with children.' The letter also noted that many families may never need to access specialist support but for those who do, the services are vital. 'Tamariki who need additional support and their whānau are at the centre of everything we do.' Both unions are urging the ministry to return to the bargaining table with better offers. The Ministry of Education has said mediation with NZEI was scheduled for July 31 and August 1, and discussions were continuing with the PSA. 'While we are disappointed that NZEI and PSA have chosen to proceed with industrial action despite initial offers, we remain committed to progressing collective agreements in good faith with the unions.'
