PHILADELPHIA: Paulinho came off the bench to score a dramatic extra-time winner as Palmeiras edged out fellow Brazilians Botafogo 1-0 on Saturday to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The match, played in Philadelphia's sweltering summer heat, remained goalless after 90 minutes of cagey and ill-tempered football.
In the 100th minute, Paulinho delivered the decisive moment, cutting in from the right, dribbling past two defenders and firing a low angled shot into the bottom corner, beyond the reach of Botafogo keeper John. Botafogo pushed for an equalizer but failed to capitalize, even after Palmeiras were reduced to 10 men when Gustavo Gomez received a second yellow card for a tactical foul.
Palmeiras held firm to secure their first win against bitter rivals Botafogo in nearly two years, and will next face Benfica or Chelsea on Friday in Philadelphia. 'We played an incredible game,' Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira told reporters. 'We did very well in the 90 minutes and in extra time. We suffered together with one player less, but we deserved it.'
It was a tense, compelling clash between familiar foes who have met in several significant games in recent years. Palmeiras overturned a three-goal deficit to beat Botafogo 4-3 in 2023, a result that derailed the Rio club's Brazilian league campaign. Botafogo responded by eliminating Palmeiras en route to their 2024 Copa Libertadores triumph and had since gone unbeaten against them in five consecutive matches until Saturday.
The first half was a sluggish affair, with Palmeiras dominating possession but struggling to break down a deep-lying Botafogo defense. Teenage winger Estevao, bound for Chelsea in a 60 million- euro deal after the tournament, provided Palmeiras' only spark down the left flank. However, chances were few, and the first half saw just one shot on target, a fierce strike from Richard Rios that John superbly parried.
Botafogo looked far from the side who inflicted a shock defeat on Champions League winners Paris St Germain last week, and Palmeiras dominated possession against the South American champions. Palmeiras returned with more urgency after the break, and Estevao tested John with a low shot from outside the box. Botafogo responded through Artur, whose curling strike was comfortably saved by Palmeiras keeper Weverton, but they kept struggling to create clearcut chances. At Club World Cup, Guardiola reinvents ‘Pepball'
MIAMI: The main appeal of the Club World Cup so far has been the chance to see South American and African clubs and their fans offer a reminder that football thrives outside of Europe too. But as the tournament moves towards the business end, FIFA's new competition is also providing the opportunity to see one of the game's greatest coaches in the midst of rebuilding and recreating his dynasty. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have won six of the last eight Premier League titles along with a host of Cups including the 2023 Champions League. But last year they looked like an empire in decline, finishing 13 points behind Liverpool with performances that were even less inspiring then the results they generated. At times it felt like the end of the Guardiola era but the Spaniard has set about re-building his team and the 5-2 demolition of Juventus on Thursday indicated the process is moving along swiftly and successfully. 'I'm really pleased because the most important thing is the players have to realize what we have to do to get back to what we were the last decade,' said Guardiola. It is tempting to view the City rebuild project purely in terms of personnel and certainly astutely recruited new arrivals Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki in midfield and Rayan Ait-Nouri at left-back showed against Juve that they have the profiles to fit into the City mould immediately. But after success built on his trademark relentlessly dominant possession football, is Guardiola also undergoing a change in his approach? Overloads Certainly, against the Italians — and despite the Florida heat — City played at a high tempo and with an aggressive, attacking intent, particularly down the flanks. With the two full-backs, Matheus Nunes and Ait-Nouri, pushing forward in support of wingers Savinho and Jeremy Doku, City created overloads in the wide areas that Juve struggled to cope with. Since the arrival of center-forward Erling Haaland in 2022, City have evolved away from near constant short-passing towards a more mixed approach and the willingness to go long, even when Omar Marmoush led the line, adds another dimension. It was noticeable that the City coach was quick to praise his goalkeeper for his accurate long passes to his strikers. 'Ederson was an incredible quarterback, making incredible long balls for Omar and Erling, and especially after we had the patience to make a lot of passes to be calm,' he said. Perhaps the reports of the death of 'Pepball' were greatly exaggerated? Guardiola's principles, forged at Barcelona, remain in place but they are evolving and adapting to a game where relentless pressing, as well as high-speed passing are essential — as Luis Enrique's Paris Saint-Germain showed in their triumphant Champions League campaign. It would be interesting to watch City evolve in pre-season friendlies but it is even more instructive to see them do it in a competitive environment. — AFP

Vinicius finds form as Mbappe set to return to Real Madrid

New coach Xabi Alonso was delighted to see the Brazilian winger shine brightly as Real Madrid set up Tuesday's Club World Cup last-16 clash against Juventus. If the 24-year-old is at his devastating best, along with Kylian Mbappe's impending return following a stomach bug, Madrid have the firepower they need to win the competition. Vinicius struck and created a goal for Fede Valverde with a backheel assist in the 3-0 win over Salzburg which helped Madrid seal top spot in Group H and avoid Manchester City, who have been the strongest side thus far in the United States. 'I'm very happy because Vini, like any forward, needed that goal,' said Alonso. Vinicius is in a contract tussle with Real Madrid over a new deal, with the Brazilian currently on the books until 2027. 'I hope I can stay here for many years. I've always said it's the club of my life,' said Vinicius earlier this week. 'I'm very happy with the coach and all the staff, and I hope I can stay here.' Madrid need the forward to click with last summer's marquee arrival Mbappe, without sacrificing the team's defensive stability. Los Blancos face Juventus in Orlando hoping to reach the quarter-finals and may be boosted by the return of superstar striker Mbappe, who could link up with Vinicius for the first time under Alonso. Mbappe missed all three group games and also had to go to hospital after suffering acute gastroenteritis, but has been training normally for several days. The Spanish coach believes the duo can play together, even though they had teething problems after the French forward arrived, occupying similar spaces. Mbappe eventually found top form and finished the season with 43 goals across all competitions, while Vinicius netted 22 times without getting close to his very best level. 'They can do it, Vini from the outside, Kylian from the inside ... it's not mutually exclusive, things can work, there's individual quality, but we need the team to function,' explained Alonso. Alonso has explained that no player in the Real Madrid starting line-up is free of defensive duties. Last season Ancelotti lined up regularly with Vinicius, Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes in the side and Madrid paid the price at the back. 'What I am certain of is that we need and want everyone to defend — the 11 players on the pitch have to be involved defensively,' said Alonso before the Salzburg game. The coach was impressed with Vinicius' work ethic against the Austrians. 'Aside from the goals, I was also really happy with the work he put in,' added Alonso. 'He helped to defend, he made sacrifices, he stayed connected with the team, didn't switch off, and that's very important to me.' Alonso will hope Vinicius continues in that vein as Mbappe prepares to make his return, possibly from the bench against Juventus.
