1928: Women's track was added to the Olympics for the first time at Amsterdam.
In the finals of the first event, 16-year-old Betty Robinson of Riverdale, Illinois, won the gold medal in the 100-meter dash. Her time: 12.2 seconds. Two finalists were disqualified for two false starts apiece. Myrtle Cook of Canada sobbed almost out of control. Germany's Helene Schmidt shook her fist at the starter and swore revenge.
Robinson was seriously injured in a plane crash and could not defend her title in the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Aided in her rehab at Northwestern University by Wildcats coach Frank Hill and trainer Carl Erickson, Robinson ran a leg on the gold-medal U.S. 4-x-100 relay team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Another Northwestern sprinter, Annette Rogers, ran on the same relay team.
1985: An early morning fire in Arlington Park's adjacent Post and Paddock Club led to greater ruin when the fire spread and destroyed the main grandstand. No one was injured.
Fire tore through Arlington Park racetrack 40 years ago. Less than a month later, the season's biggest event went on as scheduled.Less than a month later, more than 35,000 fans crowded into temporary tents and bleachers to watch the 'Miracle Million,' as Great Britain's Teleprompter defeated Greinton by less than a length. The Arlington team was recognized by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association with an Eclipse Award, the first ever awarded to a racetrack.
1993: Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
'Life is short, it is oh so sweet, there are a lot of people that we meet as we walk through these hallowed halls, but the things that mean the most are the friendships that you meet and take along with you,' Payton told the crowd in Canton, Ohio.
The 5-foot-10-inch, 200-pound Payton retired after the 1987 season as the NFL's all-time leading rusher with 16,726 yards, pushing well past Jim Brown's previous record of 12,312. It is the closest thing football has to baseball's hallowed home run mark, and Payton held it for 15 years before Emmitt Smith passed him in 2002 and ended up with 18,355.

His public memorial brought 20,000 people to Soldier Field, where speakers included NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Hall of Famers Dan Hampton and Mike Ditka and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
The NFL Man of the Year Award, which he won along with his MVP in 1977, was renamed after Payton in 2000.

Belgium's Evenepoel to join Red Bull-Bora in 2026
Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will leave Soudal Quick-Step at the end of this season, the team said on Tuesday, and join Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe. The 25-year-old Belgian is one of cycling's brightest stars and won both the road race and time-trial titles at the Paris Olympics in 2024. He is also the current time-trial world champion, finished third at the 2024 Tour de France and has twice won the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Monument race. Evenepoel also won his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a Espana in 2022. "Remco informed the team's management that he did not wish to discuss an extension of his current agreement, which expires at the end of 2026," Soudal Quick-Step said on Tuesday. "While we regret Remco's decision to leave, we will foster the memories that we have made and will continue to strive together to achieve some significant results for the rest of the season." Red Bull-Bora boss Ralph Denk hailed the signing as a landmark one for the team. "Remco brings not only exceptional athletic talent, but also a remarkable mindset. His determination, professionalism, and relentless drive to succeed are truly inspiring," he said. Evenepoel will race alongside Tour de France breakout star Florian Lipowitz, who came third and won the best young rider's white jersey. Red Bull also boast five-time Grand Tour winner Primoz Roglic. Denk described Evenepoel's arrival as a sign of "bold ambition to become one of the most attractive forces on the international cycling stage in the years to come". bur/dmc/jc

Broncos QB Bo Nix provides behind-the-scenes look at offseason training
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix silenced a lot of doubters in 2024 when he led the team to the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. The biggest question coming into 2025 is, "Can he keep this up?" Nix is doing everything in his power to make sure the answer to that question is a resounding yes. Nix released a nine-minute video documenting two days of his offseason training on Monday, giving fans an inside look at what he has been doing to perform better than he did last season. The video, "The In Between: Bo Nix," shows Nix doing various throwing, workout and sprinting drills, all aimed to help Nix remain in top physical form going into 2025. What the video doesn't show is the extra effort Nix put in aside from these sessions. Nix reached out to NFL legends such as Drew Brees, Peyton and Eli Manning and worked with longtime throwing guru Tom House to help improve his form and his habits. "The in between is what nobody really sees, and to me, it's the most important part of the journey," said Nix in the video, speaking about the offseason. "It reflects what you're going to do in the season. So if I don't train hard, if I don't train correctly, if I don't train with the end in mind, I'm just going to go out there and kind of waste time. And yeah, it'll be difficult, it won't be fun in the moment, but when you get in the game, it makes those training moments more special." Nix's training and leadership will be a boon to a hungry Broncos organization with Super Bowl aspirations. Colts coaching staff impressed with Anthony Gould's quiet improvement originally appeared on The Sporting News Second-year wide receiver Anthony Gould may not be the biggest name on the Colts offense, but he hasn't been deterred. The Oregon State product had an uneventful rookie year. He made just one 23-yard catch on offense and had a role as a special teams return man, returning a total of 17 kicks and punts over eight appearances. This offseason, Gould has taken a step up. Offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter sees his hard work paying off. 'He put in a really good offseason of work, and it's showing here at camp,' Cooter said after Sunday's practice. 'He's playing really good ball right now…he's absolutely gotten better.' Gould has been a frequent target for both Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones as a quick-hitting, over the middle connection for easy yards. That role is typically occupied by Josh Downs, but Gould has a similar skillset. Gould is listed a place behind Downs on the Colts first unofficial depth chart, the same position he was slotted into on last season's first depth chart. He's also listed as the primary kick and punt returner, a decision backed up by multiple reports of him fielding kicks at Grand Park. There's no telling how much of an impact Gould can have offensively in a crowded passing game, but the skillset and versatility is there to become a valuable asset in Indianapolis.
