KUCHING (May 23): Sarawak sibling duo SJ Borneo earned international acclaim by clinching the Gold 2nd Runner-up title at the 2025 World Championship International Competition Grand Finals held in Bangkok, Thailand from May 9 to 12.
Representing Malaysia, 15-year-old Shawn Thien Shuen and 12-year-old Jane Thien Jing stood out among 178 acts from 25 countries, drawing praise for a performance that blended modern flair and traditional elements while highlighting Sarawak's indigenous cultural heritage.
Their award-winning piece was a rearrangement of the classic Malay song 'Anak Kampung', performed in both Malay and Chinese.
The performance featured traditional Sarawak attire and musical instruments – Shawn on the djembe and Jane on the sape.
Held before a crowd of over 500 spectators, SJ Borneo's act received unanimous praise from the panel of international judges.
'This competition gave us the opportunity to stand on the world stage representing Sarawak and Malaysia, and to share our culture through music.
'Sarawak's heritage is unique and precious. We want the world to hear, see, and treasure it,' the duo said in a statement.
Participants from countries including Australia, Germany, South Korea, Italy, Russia, the United States, and more took part in the international-level event.
SJ Borneo's performance, showcasing the soulful tones of the sape and tribal rhythms of Borneo, positioned the pair as young cultural ambassadors for Sarawak.
The duo credited their success to support from the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, under the Dana Mudahcara Facilitation Fund.
'We are deeply grateful to the ministry for the support through Dana Mudahcara, which helped make this journey possible,' they said.
The Kuching siblings also extended heartfelt thanks to their teachers and educational institutions for continued encouragement and guidance.
Shawn currently studies at Chung Hua Middle School No. 1, while Jane attends SJKC Chung Hua No. 3.
They thanked their principals Bong Nyuk Siong and Lee Chee Beng along with a number of educators and mentors, for providing stage opportunities and musical guidance.
They also acknowledged the inspiration of sape pioneers including Dines Ngau Wan, Hallan Hashim, Alena Murang, and Mathew Ngau Jau, whose contributions have inspired their journey.
Looking ahead, the pair is committed to promoting traditional Sarawak music with their motto, 'Sape for All'.
The duo aims to explore new ways to preserve and evolve cultural heritage through performance.

Sterling performance by Kian Kok students

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 Text Size: The performers and guests. Kota Kinabalu: A one-hour blackout and brief mid-performance disruption did not dampen the spirits of performers at Kian Kok Middle School's annual Cultural Night, Saturday. The event themed 'Joy at Kian Kok' featured musical, dance and multicultural acts. Attendees, including parents and special guests, witnessed the resilience of students and staff as they adapted to the unexpected technical challenge. In his opening speech, Board Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh praised the students' initiative, emphasising that the event was more than just entertainment, it was a platform for growth. 'At Kian Kok, education goes beyond grades. It is about nurturing passion, character and creativity. Tonight, our students did not just perform, they proved their ability to adapt and excel under pressure,' he said. Clement pointed out the school's commitment to well-rounded development as reflected by recent achievements, including its brass band winning gold at a national competition and its Chinese orchestra preparing for a 2026 cultural exchange in Taiwan. Guest of Honour David Lam, who is Honorary Advisor to the Board, lauded the performances as a profound life lesson in passion and perseverance. 'Kian Kok is not just producing top scorers but about cultivating dreamers. On this stage, students found their voices and the courage to chase their futures,' he said. The power outage became an unplanned highlight, with students and staff working to keep spirits high. Their composure left an impression on parents and guests, who described the night as a journey of hope and resilience. As the curtain fell, the thunderous applause echoed the school's mission to empower every child to shine in their own unique light. 'Education is not just about exams. It is about being seen, heard and believed in. Tonight, we did not just witness talent, we saw the power of unwavering belief in every student's potential,' said David. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sheila Majid pays tribute to parents for career

DATUK Sheila Majid has paid tribute to her parents, saying their blessing for her was the key to her 40 years as a singer, Mingguan Malaysia reported. She spoke of the early days when she 'strategised' in seeking her late father's approval. 'Though my father was not harsh, he was strict and very old school. If he said no, it meant no.' Sheila was a mere teenager awaiting her SPM results when she got an offer to sing. 'I was the youngest of eight children. And a girl. My father would surely said no.' Her father eventually gave in, and little did she know this would evolve into a four-decade career. To mark the occasion, Sheila will hold a concert in Kuala Lumpur in November. > He carved a name as a mural artist after graduating in Fine Arts and Design from Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam. However, for the past three years, Mohamad Haris Hilmi Norhasram, 30, has been crafting food replicas using materials like air-dry clay, acrylic paint and epoxy resin. While most of his orders come from restaurant owners who use the replicas as food displays, he would also get commissions from people looking for memorable gifts, Kosmo! Ahad reported. A replica of a bowl of pulled noodles or a chicken rice dish can fetch between RM80 and RM100, depending on the intricacy and detail involved, he said.
