Summer McIntosh bagged her third world record in days after clocking 4 minutes 23.65 seconds to better her own 400 medley record at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria.
The 18-year-old Canadian prodigy, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, laid down another impressive marker ahead of next month's World Championships in Singapore with a dominant performance.
McIntosh's blistering time beat her old mark of 4 minutes 24.38 seconds set in Toronto in May last year at the Canadian Olympic trials.
McIntosh's assault on her own world record got off to a smooth start, with the teenager completing the opening butterfly leg in world record pace.
She was more than a second ahead of the world record at the halfway stage, and although that margin dropped to one-tenth of a second after the breaststroke, she produced an electrifying freestyle down the stretch to complete a scintillating performance.
"Going into tonight, I knew I could do something really special because this has probably been the best meet of my career," McIntosh said afterwards in a pool deck interview.
"World records are made to be broken. So by the time I leave this sport, I want to make sure that that record is as fast as possible," she added.
"That really keeps me going, because I know there's always going to be the next generation of kids growing up, and they're going to be chasing the record. So I've gotta give them my best effort to see how long it can stand."
Wednesday's record-breaking display was the latest entry to an impressive catalogue of performances she has produced this week in British Columbia.
On Saturday, she smashed the women's 400m freestyle record, slicing more than a second off Australian star Ariarne Titmus's world best from 2023.
She then clocked the third fastest 800m freestyle in history on Sunday, before diving back into the pool on Monday to obliterate Hungarian great Katinka Hosszu's decade-old 200m medley world record.
McIntosh, who gold medals in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m medley at last year's Paris Olympics, will now head to next month's worlds aiming to add to her collection of four world championship gold medals. (AFP)

Swiatek hits out at 'too intense' schedule for stars
Swiatek hits out at 'too intense' schedule for stars Swiatek says the number of mandatory events on the WTA Tour is ruining the spectacle for fans. File photo: Reuters Five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek believes fans are being robbed of seeing tennis' biggest names performing at their best due to the intensity of a relentless schedule. Swiatek, who has consistently spoken out about the physical and mental demands placed upon top players, said the number of mandatory events on the WTA Tour was ruining the spectacle for fans ahead of the third Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday. "I think the scheduling is super intense. It's too intense. There's no point for us to play, like, over 20 tournaments in a year," Swiatek said at her pre-Wimbledon press conference on Sunday. "Sometimes we need to sacrifice playing for your country because we need to keep up with playing these WTA 500s, for example, because we're going to get a zero in the ranking. "I think these kind of obligations and the rules about mandatory tournaments just put pressure on us. "For me the scheduling is pretty intense. I think people would still watch tennis, maybe even more, if we played less tournaments, but the quality, for example, would be better or we would be more consistent because of that." Swiatek is yet to win a title this year in a disappointing run that has seen her slip to fourth in the world rankings. Her three-year reign as French Open champion was ended in a semi-final defeat to world number one Aryna Sabalenka earlier this month. But a slightly earlier exit from the clay of Roland Garros has allowed Swiatek extra time to prepare for the transition to grass, where she has traditionally struggled despite winning Wimbledon as a junior. Swiatek reached her first ever grass court final on Saturday, losing to Jessica Pegula in the Bad Homburg Open. "Probably so far it's the best one that I've had," added Switek on her preparations for Wimbledon, where she has never progressed beyond the fourth round. "I had really great time in Bad Homburg and enjoyed it. Also having more time to practice before on grass really helped. I feel that I have a little bit more skills." Swiatek faces Russia's Polina Kudermetova in the first round on Tuesday. (AFP)

Coach Ivankovic fired following World Cup elimination
Coach Ivankovic fired following World Cup elimination Branko Ivankovic was appointed China's coach in February 2024. NurPhoto via AFP Branko Ivankovic has been fired as the national team coach following the squad's elimination from the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup this month, the Chinese Football Association has announced. The 71-year-old Croatian coach was removed from the post as a result of China finishing fifth in Group C of the continent's preliminaries for next year's 48-team finals, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. "The Chinese Football Association expresses gratitude to Mr Branko Ivankovic and his coaching staff for their dedicated efforts during their tenure with the men's national team and their contributions to Chinese football," a CFA statement said on Friday. "We wish Mr. Ivankovic all the best in his future work and life." Ivankovic, who led Iran at the World Cup finals in Germany in 2006, was appointed China's coach in February 2024, replacing Aleksandar Jankovic. He steered the country into the third phase of Asia's World Cup qualifying. His team recovered from a poor start to maintain their hopes of a place at their first World Cup since the nation's debut appearance at the finals in 2002. Wins over Indonesia and Bahrain kept the national team in contention for a berth in the fourth round of qualifying, but losses to Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia were followed by a defeat against Indonesia on June 5 that ended any prospect of progressing. The Chinese association said Dejan Djurdjevic, who led China to the quarter-finals of the Under 20 Asian Cup in Shenzhen in February, will take over on a caretaker basis for next month's East Asian Championship in South Korea. Islanders take Schaefer first overall in NHL Draft
Islanders take Schaefer first overall in NHL Draft Matthew Schaefer held back tears at the draft ceremony in Los Angeles. Photo: Reuters Canadian 17-year-old Matthew Schaefer was the first overall selection in the NHL Draft on Friday, with the New York Islanders snapping up the talented defenseman widely touted as a future superstar. Schaefer played the past two seasons with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He missed nine games to start the 2024-25 season with glandular fever, then suffered a broken collarbone at the 2025 World Junior Championships. Amid those setbacks, he finished the season with seven goals and 15 assists in just 17 games played, but that did not dim the prospects for a player admired for his maturity as well as his skills. "Matthew the hockey player is outstanding," Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said. "The human being is as outstanding as the hockey player. We're so excited to have him here." Schaefer has had to overcome plenty of adversity already in his young career. He fashioned a standout rookie season in 2023-24 despite grappling with his mother Jennifer's death from cancer on February 24. At the draft ceremony in Los Angeles, he held back tears after his name was called, thanking his mom. "You wait for this moment your whole life," said Schaefer, who will turn 18 on September 5. "I wish my mom could be here but I know she's with me in spirit." The San Jose Sharks had the second overall selection and took 18-year-old Canadian forward Michael Misa, who played last season for Saginaw of the OHL. The Chicago Blackhawks selected third and took Anton Frondell of Sweden. The 18-year-old center scored 11 goals wih 14 assists in 29 games for Djurgardens IF in the second tier Hockey Allsvenskan last season. (AFP)
