Music Venue Trust teams up with ‘people's social media platform' WeAre8

Independent22-03-2025

The Music Venue Trust has teamed up with social media platform WeAre8, which is sponsoring five gigs at independent music venues around the UK between now and the end of May 2025.
The partnership comes amid dire warnings about the future of grassroots venues in the UK. In January, a damning report found that almost a quarter of MVT member venues (810) face a threat of permanent closure.
Meanwhile, one grassroots venue closed its doors every two weeks in 2024, MVT figures found, while a further 80 had stopped hosting live music events and over 200 had been forced to seek emergency help.
The partnership between the MVT and WeAre8 aims to promote both local artists and the venues they're performing at, in the wake of a separate report that found 84 per cent of UK independent artists cannot afford to tour this year.
WeAre8 is supporting the following venues: Aatma in Manchester, Little Buildings in Newcastle, The Asylum in Newcastle and The Fox & Newt in Leeds.
The Music Venue Trust has also been listed in WeAre8's 'wallet', which means that users can choose to send funds generated from adverts to the organisation.
The platform is structured so that money from advertisers is shared with people, publishers, non-profits and planet projects.
Laura Chase, UK managing director of WeAre8, said: 'WeAre8 has created a safe and positive place for us all to connect, share and create. We want to support the creative industries, the grassroots venues and the smaller bands and artists - who are being lost to algorithms on other social platforms - and not being recognised or rewarded for their talent and content.
'Our mission is to help elevate and support the amazing artists we have in the UK and help them find a viable economic path forward. Essential to this is supporting independent music venues, which the Music Venue Trust has ploughed passion and resources into protecting and promoting over the last ten plus years. By including Music Venue Trust in our wallet, we're also hoping music lovers will support the charity by helping to fund its fantastic work.'
Denzil Thomas, partnership manager of Music Venues Trust, said: 'There are so many amazing venues up and down the UK that have played a crucial role in the development of British music over the last 40 years; nurturing local talent and providing a platform for artists to build their careers and develop their music and their performance skills. Yet they're battling each week to stay alive. We believe our partnership with WeAre8 can help keep these special places alive.'

Emma Raducanu breaks silence on Carlos Alcaraz rumours with four-word response

Emma Raducanu has responded to rumours of a blossoming romance between herself and her US Open doubles partner Carlos Alcaraz ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday Emma Raducanu has laughed off suggestions of a romantic relationship with Carlos Alcaraz on the eve of Wimbledon. Raducanu will team up with Alcaraz to play mixed doubles at the US Open later this year – and the exciting pairing has led to suggestions of something more between them. The British No.1 is preparing to face teenage wildcard Mimi Xu in the first round at Wimbledon on Monday. The world No.38 is focused on the match after competing at Eastbourne, but still had to address rumours about Alcaraz in her pre-tournament press conference in SW19. ‌ Raducanu has been friends with the Spaniard for four years and they were spotted practising together at Wimbledon on Friday. Asked if they had discussed tactics for the US Open, she replied: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with (water brand) Evian. ‌ 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' Later in the press conference, came the question she must have known was coming. Asked if there was any substance in the romance rumours, Raducanu replied with a smile: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then stepped in to end the questions, prompting a laugh from Raducanu, who added: 'Way to wrap up!' Raducanu and Alcaraz are both 22 years old and the British star recently explained how they became friends. She said: 'I've known him for years and actually in Wimbledon 2021, it was like kind of the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021. 'And I remember he was always playing the day before me and I was playing like the second day of the round. And I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. 'And I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round and it was like a big win, his breakout kind of win on a big stage and it was really cool to kind of, I guess, go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, but we were staying in touch for the whole time and yeah, it's nice.' She added: 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. 'I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young because when you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, that's a real genuine connection, because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you.'

Kylie Jenner accused of breaking major rule at Jeff Bezos and Lauren's wedding

Jeff Bezos and long-term love Lauren Sanchez pulled out all the stops for their £48million wedding ceremony in Venice - but A-List guest Kylie Jenner may have broken a huge rule... Kylie Jenner was amongst the many celebrities at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's lavish Venice wedding ceremony this week, but fans think she may have broken one huge rule. The 27-year-old was in attendance alongside sisters, Kim, Khloe and Kendall, as she was spotted getting into a water taxi in what looked like a white corset dress. ‌ Many fans were left in shock upon first look of the custom-designed gown by Turkish-British designer Dilara Findikoglu, which featured lace-up detailing. However, upon further inspection it became apparent that Kylie Jenner 's dress was blue and silver under the right lighting, with it being described as "icy blue" online. ‌ Fans, however, were still up in arms over the dress, as they claimed Kyle 'broke' the rule of not wearing white, which is traditionally worn by the bride. Taking to social media, one fan penned: "Y is Kylie Jenner wearing white??", as a second penned: "White should be the last colour choice!" As for Lauren's dress, the bride, 55, stunned in a bespoke Dolce & Gabbana gown. The long sleeved white gown featured a huge train and stunning white flower detailing, including white floral appliques over the corset style dress. As well as the Kardashian-Jenners, a number of other A-List celebrities were in attendance, including, Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio and Ivanka Trump. ‌ An A-List guest list watched on as Jeff and Lauren exchanged vows in a ceremony lasting about 25 minutes, with family and friends gathered at the event. They were heard cheering, clapping and whistling for the pair after they said 'I do'. To kick off the lavish ceremony, a Gospel Choir welcomed the guests and the bride and groom into the event, with the choir singing Whitney Houston's Higher Love. Opera star Matteo Bocelli, son of of singer Andrea Bocelli, performed at the pair's wedding reception, where he sang Elvis Presley's song I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. Andrea could not attend the ceremony as he was in concert. Despite celebrating their wedding this weekend in Venice, it's been reported that the couple tied the knot weeks ago. An insider involved in the event planning, they said: 'They have been married for at least a month, more than a month. The marriage is fully legal and took place in America under American law.'

Three big names top Amazon's James Bond casting wishlist

Amazon MGM are reportedly circling three huge names to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. The long-running franchise made a monumental step towards its next instalment this week, with the appointment of Denis Villeneuve as director. Announcing that the Dune filmmaker would be helming the next film in the series, head of Amazon MGM Studios Mike Hopkins said: 'We are honoured that Denis has agreed to direct James Bond's next chapter. 'He is a cinematic master, whose filmography speaks for itself.' Since then, speculation has gone into overdrive as to who might play Villeneuve's Bond – with some suggesting he might tap up Dune collaborator Timothée Chalamet to take the role. According to Variety, the studio and producers have their own wishlist in mind – and it's between actors Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland and Harris Dickinson. 28-year-old Jacob hit the stratosphere as the star of the 2023 hit Saltburn, appearing opposite Barry Keoghan as the object of creepy Oliver Quick's affections. With the publication reporting that producers are looking for an actor under the age of 30, Jacob certainly hits the bill in that respect. While Jacob is an Australian, that shouldn't count against him in playing British instruction Bond – underrated 007 George Lazenby was an Aussie too. If Jacob is successful, this should more than make up for him missing out on a starring role in James Gunn's upcoming Superman reboot. Marvel Cinematic Universe star Tom Holland, 29, previously threw his own name into the hat, admitting that he'd 'love' to play Bond. 'I'm just putting that out there,' he teased in 2021, adding: 'I look pretty good in a suit.' And, as the MCU's own Spider-Man, Tom is no stranger to explosive franchise filmmaking. English actor Harris, 29, has had a strong run of hits recently, starring in Triangle of Sadness, The Iron Claw and Babygirl in the last three years alone. As of April this year, Harris's odds were listed as 9/1 to score the elusive license to kill. 'The 28-year-old already has a very impressive portfolio of work and has received critical acclaim for his acting alongside Nicole Kidman,' said Betfred spokesperson Robert Ford. Earlier this year, it was announced that Harris will step into the shoes of another British icon – playing John Lennon in Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopic. With producers circling their Bond, speculation has also been rife as to who might be the next Bond girl. While some speculated that Zendaya could appear opposite Villeneuve's future Bond, her Dune: Part 2 co-star Florence Pugh has edged her out of the top spot. According to the Midsommar star is the favourite to be the next Bond girl, at odds of 8/1. 'I think everyone's always interested in playing a spy, right?' she told Digital Spy. 'That's something we grow up admiring, which is so strange, but it's just a very clever and quick world that we all want to be a part of.' As the only name formally attached to the new film, Villeneuve has responded to the announcement of his new gig, promising that the franchise is in safe hands. More Trending 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,' he said in a statement released soon after the news broke. 'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. He described the opportunity 'a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour.' Got a story?
