Plan underway to double funding for youth-led projects in Alexandria: MSMEDA chief
Rahmy's remarks came in celebration of Alexandria's National Day, where he highlighted the agency's focus on widening access to finance for both existing project owners and young entrepreneurs hoping to launch new ventures. He also emphasised MSMEDA's efforts to equip project owners with the technical support they need to ensure long-term stability and growth. He added that the agency will continue prioritising industrial and productive projects, working hand in hand with the Alexandria governorate to provide all necessary financial and technical backing to the city's industrial zones.
Moreover, Rahmy explained that MSMEDA's strategic approach in the governorate aims to offer more financial and non-financial incentives and support, as stipulated in Law No. 152/2020 on enterprise development. The goal is to empower Alexandria's youth to fully capitalise on these services, start projects across various sectors, and seize promising investment opportunities in the area. He also noted the advantages provided by Law No. 6/2025, which grants several tax facilitations to project owners.
The agency head also pointed to MSMEDA's active role in forging agreements with key partners across Alexandria, including the iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The agency signed a cooperation agreement with the library last year to enhance collaboration and share knowledge and technical expertise, with the aim of advancing common goals—particularly in economic empowerment of women and promoting an entrepreneurial mindset among youth.
Rahmy added that MSMEDA succeeded in channelling EGP 2.2bn into Alexandria between July 2014 and May 2025, funding 51,000 projects and generating over 110,000 diverse job opportunities. He also revealed that EGP 102m of this amount was allocated to infrastructure, community development and training projects, creating 718,000 workdays for irregular labourers.

Egypt Increases Tour Guide Wages Starting October 2025
Ali abo deshish In a significant move aimed at enhancing the quality of tourism services and supporting tourism professionals, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Mr. Sherif Fathy, has issued a ministerial decree raising the official wages for tour guides, effective October 1, 2025. According to the new decree, the daily wage for a full working day (8 hours) will increase to EGP 1,800, while the half-day rate (4 continuous hours) will be EGP 1,100. This adjustment reflects the ministry's commitment to fair labor practices and elevating service standards in the tourism sector. Mr. Sherif Fathy emphasized the ministry's dedication to empowering human resources within Egypt's tourism industry. 'We are committed to ensuring fair working conditions and promoting service excellence for tourists, which ultimately strengthens Egypt's global tourism image,' the Minister stated. Ms. Samia Sami, Assistant Minister for Tourism Companies Affairs, noted that this decision follows directives from the Minister to improve the livelihoods of tour guides, recognizing their essential role in promoting Egypt's heritage and enriching the visitor experience. She added that the last wage increase for tour guides occurred in 2023, when the full-day wage was set at EGP 1,000, and EGP 600 for a half-day. The current increase reflects evolving economic conditions and the strategic importance of guiding professionals in boosting tourism inflows. The decree will be circulated to the General Syndicate of Tour Guides and the Chamber of Travel and Tourism Companies to inform all relevant stakeholders. It mandates that no tour guide should receive less than the newly set wages. The decision was made in coordination with both the syndicate and the chamber to ensure consensus and compliance across the sector read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Local Gold Prices Decline as Markets Await Fed Decision and Trade War Developments
Waleed Farouk Gold prices in the local market saw a significant decline during Tuesday's trading session, despite a slight global uptick in spot prices driven by renewed geopolitical and trade tensions. The local drop coincided with a decline in the U.S. dollar exchange rate, contributing to a 65 EGP per gram drop in gold prices since the beginning of the week. Local gold prices fell by approximately 10 EGP compared to Monday's closing levels, with 21-karat gold now trading at 4,565 EGP per gram. Meanwhile, the global spot price rose by around $7 to reach $3,324 per ounce. Additionally, 24-karat gold was quoted at 5,217 EGP, while 18-karat stood at 3,913 EGP. The 14-karat price reached 3,044 EGP, and the gold pound (eight grams of 21-karat) was priced at 36,520 EGP. Gold had already dropped about 50 EGP on Monday, falling from 4,630 to 4,575 EGP per gram, while the global spot price declined by $20—from $3,337 to $3,317 per ounce. Tariff Agreement Fails to Calm Markets Although a preliminary tariff agreement was announced between the U.S. and the European Union—imposing a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the U.S.—markets didn't react with much optimism. While the agreement avoided further escalation in the trade war, it preserved the underlying dispute, raising doubts about global growth prospects and highlighting the potential for tariffs to become a long-term fixture rather than a temporary measure. This rekindled demand for gold as a safe haven, especially amid stalled U.S.-China trade negotiations. Senior economic officials from both nations held a more than five-hour meeting in Stockholm on Monday to explore the possibility of extending their trade truce by another three months. With no clear outcome emerging, investor concerns have intensified, reviving risk-off sentiment across global markets. Will the Fed Decision Support Gold? Markets are now squarely focused on the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting, which began today and will continue for two days. While no change in interest rates is expected, investors are closely watching the final statement and commentary from Fed officials for any signals about the timing of future rate cuts. Any dovish tone or inclination toward monetary easing could weigh on the U.S. dollar and support gold, particularly in the context of slowing growth and inflationary pressures stemming from tariffs. Conversely, continued dollar strength could apply further downward pressure on gold prices. Could Gold Reach $4,000? In a contrasting development, Fidelity International has projected that gold prices could reach $4,000 per ounce by the end of next year. This forecast is based on three key drivers: anticipated rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, a weakening U.S. dollar, and continued gold accumulation by central banks in response to rising geopolitical and inflationary risks. Gold is currently in a complex position—caught between local pressures from a falling dollar and international anticipation surrounding the Fed meeting and trade war outcomes. While investors continue to use gold for hedging, the final word will be shaped by upcoming economic data and monetary policy decisions in the weeks ahead. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Remittances up, dollar down: EGP finds support amid uncertain global outlook - Economy
The Egyptian pound has continued to strengthen modestly against the US dollar, with the official exchange rate falling below EGP 49 for the first time since late October 2024, nearly nine months ago. As of Monday, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) listed the dollar at EGP 48.6 for buying and EGP 48.7 for selling, down from EGP 49.0 and EGP 49.1, respectively, at the close of trading last Thursday. Every month, the dollar has depreciated against the pound by roughly 1.7 percent. Year-on-year, however, it remains up by around 0.7 percent, according to Ahram Online calculations based on the greenback rate from a range of public and private banks. 'The recent appreciation of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar signals a modest rebalancing in the foreign exchange market,' banking expert Hani Abou El-Fotouh told Ahram Online. 'This has been driven by local improvements, including a narrowing of the gap between official and parallel market rates, increased access to foreign currency through formal channels, and stronger FX inflows from debt instruments and anticipated investments.' Abou El-Fotouh noted that remittance flows have shown a mild recovery, while import controls remain disciplined, helping to reduce pressure on foreign currency demand. Remittances from Egyptians abroad have maintained the sharp rise recorded between July 2024 and May 2025, reaching $32.8 billion — a 69.6 per cent increase year-on-year — according to the latest figures from the CBE. 'However, in my view, this trend is fragile unless supported by deeper structural reforms, particularly those that boost exports and expand domestic production capacity. On the global level, the dollar remains resilient, supported by robust US data and expectations of prolonged high interest rates. Relying solely on short-term inflows or administrative measures is unsustainable. Achieving genuine currency stability requires addressing underlying economic imbalances, especially in the context of a tightening global monetary environment,' he warned. A recent report by US investment bank Goldman Sachs echoed that caution, suggesting that the Egyptian pound remains undervalued by around 30 percent relative to its fair value. The bank said there is room for further appreciation, particularly if portfolio inflows continue and key monetary indicators improve. The report highlighted that the pound has held steady since its devaluation in March 2024, with the convergence of official and parallel market rates signalling growing investor confidence in Egypt's exchange rate policy, despite ongoing geopolitical challenges in the region. Goldman Sachs also pointed to anchored expectations and low volatility, with the official exchange rate fluctuating within a narrow band since the beginning of the year. On the fundamentals front, it cited a rebound in Egypt's foreign reserves and a reversal in the banking sector's net foreign asset position, which swung from a $17.6 billion deficit at the start of 2023 to a $4.8 billion surplus by May 2025. Meanwhile, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is scheduled to visit Egypt in September to conduct the fifth and sixth reviews of the country's $8 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) loan programme. Both reviews are expected to be completed by December. The mission will also begin discussions for the first review of Egypt's $1.3 billion Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) loan programme, which is likewise expected to conclude before the end of the year. Completion of all three reviews would make Egypt eligible to receive a combined disbursement of over $2.4 billion. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
