Lions' Dan Sheehan cited for foul play in Wallabies Test clash

The Suna day ago
BRITISH and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan was cited Sunday for foul play over an incident in the third Test against Australia that flattened Wallabies playmaker Tom Lynagh.
The Irish hooker charged into the breakdown during the first half of the clash in Sydney that the hosts won 22-12, appearing to elbow Lynagh in the head.
The incident was missed by the referee and television match official (TMO), despite Lynagh leaving the field for a head injury assessment which he failed.
World Rugby confirmed the citing, stating, 'British and Irish Lions player Dan Sheehan will have a citing complaint reviewed by an Independent Foul Play Review Committee after being cited by the independent citing commissioner Adrien Menez for an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.20 (a).'
Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt admitted he initially missed the incident. 'We didn't see Tom's incident, and it was probably a little bit later that we got a glimpse of it, and that's all I've seen so far,' he said.
Schmidt acknowledged the challenges for officials, adding, 'There's always a difficulty for a TMO. He's watching the main TV broadcast, and then if he doesn't pick it up there, then he doesn't access the other angles because everything's happening so quickly.'
The Sydney Test was played in difficult weather conditions, with Lions skipper Maro Itoje failing a concussion test and lock James Ryan being knocked out during a tackle. – AFP

Tennis-ITF names Britain's Hutchins as new CEO

(Reuters) -The International Tennis Federation has named British former player Ross Hutchins as its new chief executive officer to take over from Kelly Fairweather at the end of October. Hutchins, 40, played for Britain at the Olympics and Davis Cup and later served as a tournament director. He is currently the ATP Chief Sporting Officer and brings vast experience from his roles in tennis and management. "In recent years, the ITF has built strong momentum across key areas, from digital innovation and the restructuring of our tours to the introduction of a balanced calendar, and the continued growth of wheelchair tennis," ITF President David Haggerty said. "Ross brings the leadership, vision, and experience to the ITF that will help us deliver on our mission for the benefit of players, fans, and nations around the world. "I would like to thank Kelly for his nine years of service and for his assistance with the transition process." As CEO, Hutchins will also lead the growth of the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, as well as the ITF's management of tennis and wheelchair tennis at the Olympics and Paralympics and the qualification pathways for both events. Soccer-Swindon coach Holloway vows to hunt down fan who threw seat at Walsall player

(Reuters) -Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway was left seething after a fan reportedly threw a seat at Walsall goalkeeper Myles Roberts in a League Two match, urging the club to identify and reveal the name of the supporter involved in the incident. British media reported that an object was thrown from the crowd towards Roberts in the final minutes of Walsall's 2-1 win over Swindon on Saturday. The object did not hit Roberts but landed near him, with Holloway saying in an interview with club media that it had been part of a stadium seat. "I'm disgusted by whoever that person was. Whoever you are, you're not a Swindon fan. I'm not having you and I hope you get caught. That is absolutely horrific," said the 62-year-old Englishman. "How dare you put our club in the situation that you've just done. You think that's in our name. It's not in my name. It's not in this badge's name. And we don't want you in football. That's how I feel. "So let's find them, whoever it is. Give us a name ... If you've ripped a seat out and you've thrown it at somebody, I just can't stand you, whoever you are. And I will find you. I want us to find that person and shame them." In a statement, Swindon said they were working with Walsall and local authorities to identify those responsible. "Let us be clear: any individuals found to have engaged in such actions will face the strictest possible sanctions, including banning orders and legal action where appropriate," the club added. The fullback is one of three players who will travel to England for the August 22 - September 27 tournament under an injury cloud along with Brianna Hoy and Siokapesi Palu. Prop Hoy is working her way back from knee surgery and has not played for Australia so far this year, while skipper Palu, who plays in the back row or centres, has been struggling with a foot injury. The eighth-ranked Wallaroos, whose best finish at the World Cup was a run to the semi-finals in 2010, completed their preparations for the tournament with a record 36-5 win over Wales last Friday. Nearly half of coach Jo Yapp's 32-woman squad will be competing at their first World Cup but 17 players are returning after taking part in the 2022 tournament in New Zealand, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by England. Among the World Cup debutants are 18-year-old fullback Caitlyn Halse and 17-year-old outside back Waiaria Ellis, who will be vying to become the youngest Wallaroo to play at a World Cup. "We have a very special group of people within this squad, diverse in culture and a range of ages and levels of experience in the game," Yapp said in a news release. "A World Cup is the pinnacle event in sport and women's rugby will showcase that in England later this month. We are ready to perform on the global stage and thank everyone who is supporting us on and off the field." Australia first offered part-time contracts to their women's players two years ago and have been working towards fulltime deals for regular internationals. The Wallaroos kick off their campaign against Samoa in Manchester on August 23 and also play the United States and top-ranked hosts England in a tough Pool A. Squad: Forwards - Katalina Amosa, Bree-Anna Browne, Adiana Talakai, Faliki Pohiva, Emily Chancellor, Annabelle Codey, Piper Duck, Ashley Fernandez, Brianna Hoy, Asoiva Karpani, Lydia Kavoa, Kaitlan Leaney, Michaela Leonard, Ashley Marsters, Tania Naden, Bridie O'Gorman, Siokapesi Palu, Tabua Tuinakauvadra. Backs - Charlotte Caslick, Desiree Miller, Faitala Moleka, Waiaria Ellis, Caitlin Urwin, Samantha Wood, Georgina Friedrichs, Caitlyn Halse, Tia Hinds, Layne Morgan, Trilleen Pomare, Cecilia Smith, Maya Stewart.
