Taiwan detects 50 Chinese military aircraft around island
China insists democratic, self-ruled Taiwan is part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring the island under its control.
Beijing has ramped up the deployment of fighter jets and naval vessels around Taiwan in recent years to press its claim of sovereignty, which Taipei rejects.
Taiwan also accuses China of using espionage, cyberattacks and disinformation to weaken its defenses.
Along with the 50 aircraft, six Chinese naval vessels were also detected in the 24 hours to 6:00 a.m. (10:00 p.m. GMT Thursday), the defense ministry said.
It said in a separate statement that an additional 24 Chinese aircraft, including fighters and drones, were spotted since 8:50 a.m. Friday.
Among them, 15 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait in conducting air–sea joint training with Chinese naval vessels, the ministry said, adding it 'monitored the situation and responded accordingly.'
The latest incursion came after British Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Spey sailed through the Taiwan Strait on June 18, Taiwan's foreign ministry said Thursday.
The United States and other countries view the 180-kilometer (112-mile) Taiwan Strait as international waters that should be open to all vessels.
The last time a British Navy ship transited the Taiwan Strait was in 2021, when the HMS Richmond, a frigate deployed with Britain's aircraft carrier strike group, sailed through from Japan to Vietnam.
China strongly condemned Britain at the time and deployed its military to follow the vessel.
In April, Taiwan detected 76 Chinese aircraft and 15 naval vessels around the island, when Beijing conducted live-fire exercises that included simulated strikes aimed at the island's key ports and energy sites.
The highest number of Chinese aircraft recorded was 153 on October 15, after China staged large-scale military drills in response to Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te's National Day speech days earlier.

ISLAMABAD: GuoDong Group, a leading Chinese communications firm, has expressed 'strong interest' in investment in Pakistan's information and communication technology (ICT) and new energy sectors, the Pakistani IT ministry said on Sunday. The statement came after a meeting between Pakistan's IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja and a three-member GuoDong Group delegation, led by its founder and chairman Lu Jie in Shanghai. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Global Artificial Intelligence Conference, at which both sides discussed investment opportunities in Pakistan, according to the Pakistani IT ministry. 'The delegation expressed strong interest in investing in Pakistan's ICT sector, with a focus on telecommunication towers, data centers, and cloud computing infrastructure,' the Pakistani ministry said in a statement. 'Mr. Lu Jie also conveyed interest in expanding to new energy domains, including EV charging stations, smart city solutions, and advanced material manufacturing within Pakistan.' The development comes as Pakistan, slowly recovering from a macroeconomic crisis under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal, has been looking to boost foreign investment for sustainable growth. In May, the Pakistani government allocated 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the first phase of a national initiative to power cryptocurrency mining and Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers. The South Asian country is also looking to build critical electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as it targets 30 percent of all new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030 under its ambitious New Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) 2025–2030. Welcoming the proposals, Khawaja invited the GuoDong Group officials to visit Pakistan for more detailed discussions with relevant stakeholders. 'She assured the delegation of the Government's full support and facilitation to help realize these investment initiatives,' the IT ministry said.

Bangladesh orders 25 Boeing planes as part of push to ease US tariffs
DHAKA: Bangladesh has ordered 25 aircraft from Boeing and ramped up imports of key American goods in an effort to defuse trade tensions and bring down the steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, a senior official said on Sunday. The moves are part of a broader strategy to narrow a $6 billion US trade deficit with Bangladesh and avoid a looming 35 percent tariff hike that has rattled the country's export sector, especially the garments industry which risks losing competitiveness in one of its largest markets. 'We need new aircraft urgently, possibly within the next couple of years,' Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman told reporters. 'Initially, it was 14 planes — now it's 25,' he said, referring to an earlier plan to purchase aircraft from the US-based manufacturer. Alongside the aircraft deal, Bangladesh is boosting imports of wheat, soybean oil and cotton from the United States. A new agreement signed earlier this month will see the country import 700,000 tons of US wheat annually over the next five years. North Korea's Kim vows to win anti-US battle marking Korean War anniversary
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country would achieve victory in 'anti-imperalist, anti-US' battles, as the country marked the anniversary of the Korean War armistice, state media reported on Sunday. Kim 'affirmed that our state and its people would surely achieve the great cause of building a rich country with a strong army and become honorable victors in the anti-imperialist, anti-US showdown,' KCNA state news agency said, referring to his visit to a war museum on a previous day. North Korea signed an armistice agreement with the United States and China on July 27, 1953, ending the fighting in the three-year war. US generals signed the agreement representing the United Nations forces that had backed South Korea. North Korea calls July 27 'Victory Day' even though the armistice drew a border dividing the Korean peninsula roughly equally in area after the two sides had made major advances back and forth during the war. South Korea does not mark the day with any major events. But in a speech read out on Sunday at a commemoration ceremony honoring Korean War veterans in Washington, D.C., South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung pledged to further cement the country's alliance with the United States and protect freedom and peace. 'Through efforts in various fields including politics, economy, security, and culture, we will further strengthen the noble South Korea-US alliance forged in blood and make even more efforts to firmly protect freedom and peace on the Korean Peninsula,' Lee said. North Korea is now fighting alongside Russia in the war in Ukraine. Thousands of North Korean troops were deployed to Russia's Kursk region, while Pyongyang has also supplied Russia with munitions. It may deploy more troops in July or August, South Korea has said. Kim also visited memorials honoring the veterans of the 1950-53 war including the Tower of Friendship remembering the Chinese People's Liberation Army soldiers who fought with the North Koreans, and met soldiers in an artillery regiment to celebrate the day, state media KCNA said.
