Arsenal in final stages of Ethan Nwaneri talks over new contract

New York Times15-07-2025
Arsenal are in the final stages of talks with Ethan Nwaneri over a new contract, which will end any prospect of the playmaker leaving and secure his services for the long-term future.
Nwaneri has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal, with major interest from suitors in the Premier League and abroad.

But the England Under-21 international's priority was always to stay at the club he joined aged eight, which will come as a significant boost to Arsenal and their supporters.
Arsenal were not allowed to propose fresh terms until Nwaneri turned 18 in late March and since last season ended, he has been away representing his national team and on holiday.
Upon returning, discussions have ramped up and the academy graduate is ready to commit to his boyhood team.
Nwaneri enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2024-25 — contributing nine goals and two assists across 37 appearances for Mikel Arteta's men.
That represented a substantial amount of minutes for such a young talent and explains why there were no demands about game time during negotiations.
He was deployed mainly on the right side of Arsenal's attack and featured prominently when Bukayo Saka was out injured.
It is expected he will soon occupy a more central role, providing competition and back-up for captain Martin Odegaard.

Ethan Nwaneri's ambition has been clear for all to see during his rise from Arsenal's pre-academy to the first team.
Despite scoring an impressive nine goals last season, he was not shy in admitting he was aiming for 10 at a media session before helping England retain the Under-21s European Championship this summer.
Asked for his personal standout moment from his breakout season, Nwaneri said: 'The goal against Man City. I knew I'd do something if I got the ball. Then Declan (Rice) luckily saw me. You don't really think, you just do it. You think about it afterwards.'
That goal bookended a 5-1 win for Arsenal, but Nwaneri was not short of impressive moments last term. He became the youngest player to score in successive Champions League games with goals against Girona and PSV Eindhoven, and is now the third-youngest scorer in a Champions League knockout game behind Jude Bellingham and Bojan.
The midfielder also set himself apart with trademark finishes into the top left corner, which Arsenal fans will no doubt enjoy seeing more of in the coming seasons.

Bayern Munich resume talks with Liverpool over Luis Diaz deal

Bayern Munich have resumed talks with Liverpool over a deal for forward Luis Diaz. The Bavarian club are yet to submit a second bid for the Colombian winger but remain keen on a deal, and are now in regular dialogue with Liverpool. The Athletic reported on July 15 that Liverpool had rejected an offer worth €67.5million (£58.6m; $78.8m) from Bayern for Diaz, who has made it clear that he wants to leave the Anfield club. Advertisement Diaz's Liverpool contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027. He has trained as usual in Hong Kong this week as Liverpool prepare for Saturday's friendly against AC Milan, but did not feature in their pre-season games against Preston North End or Stoke City last week. Bayern have been in the market for a forward this summer but have missed out on several targets. The Bundesliga champions' primary target Florian Wirtz chose to move to Liverpool, while Spain international winger Nico Williams opted to renew his contract with Athletic Club. The Athletic reported on July 9 that Bayern had enquired about signing RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons. Bayern admire Diaz's versatile and regard him as a forward who can play different roles across the front line. Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37.5m, with the deal potentially rising to £50m with add-ons. He has made 148 appearances for the club, scoring 41 goals and providing 23 assists in all competitions. Diaz played a key role under Arne Slot during Liverpool's 2024-25 Premier League title-winning campaign, scoring 13 top-flight goals in 36 appearances.

🚨 BREAKING: Crystal Palace announce new shirt number for fans' favourite

Crystal Palace have confirmed that Colombian international Daniel Muñoz will wear the No. 2 shirt for the upcoming 2025/26 Premier League season. Muñoz joined Palace in January 2024 from Genk and has quickly established himself as a key figure in the Eagles' defence. Known for his energy, overlapping runs and fierce commitment, the 29-year-old has already become a fan favourite at Selhurst Park. The number two shirt has traditionally been worn by full-backs, and the switch is likely a reflection of Muñoz's status as first-choice right-back heading into the new campaign under manager Oliver Glasner. Palace fans will get their first look at Muñoz in his new number when the team completes their pre-season preparations ahead of the Premier League's return in mid-August. This news comes just a day after the club confirmed a major off-field development, with American businessman Woody Johnson completing his purchase of Eagle Football's shareholding in Crystal Palace. With stability off the pitch and clarity on it, all eyes now turn to the upcoming season as Palace look to build on a strong finish last term. 📸 Tom Dulat - 2025 Getty Images
