WNBA says individual that threw sex toy on court at Dream game has been arrested

Yahooa day ago
An individual that threw a sex toy onto the court during the Golden State Valkyries' 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia, has been arrested, the WNBA confirmed to USA TODAY on Saturday.
The incident happened in the final minute of Tuesday's contest as the Dream and Valkyries were tied at 75. The lime green object was thrown from the stands onto the court and landed near the top of the free throw line shortly after Atlanta's Maya Caldwell blocked a 3-point attempt from Golden State's Tiffany Hayes. Officials did not stop play as the object bounced toward the sidelines. A police officer later picked the item up using a towel.
Days later, another sex toy was thrown onto the court during the Golden State's 73-66 victory over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena in Chicago on Friday. The incident happened with 7:42 remaining in the third quarter as the Sky led 39-37. Officials immediately halted play after a green object landed out of bounds under the basket.
"The subject involved in the incident in Atlanta on Tuesday has been arrested," the WNBA said in a statement to USA TODAY on Saturday.
A number of WNBA players have spoken out against the string of incidents. Sky center Elizabeth Williams said it's "super disrespectful," while Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said flying objects could "hurt one of us."
"I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up," Williams said following Friday's game. New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison added, "ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??! Please do better. It's not funny. never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous."
The WNBA said any spectator caught throwing anything on the court will be "immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban," in addition to facing charges.
"The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league," the WNBA said. "Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans. In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities."

Mbeumo 'delivered' everything expected of him

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says new signing Bryan Mbeumo "delivered" everything he expected of him in his club debut against Everton. The 25-year-old helped United win the Premier League Summer Series overnight with a 2-2 draw against the Toffees in Atlanta. "I think he played well," said Amorim. "He needs to understand the position, the movements, but I think the first touch, the way he connects with one touch, opened a lot of space. "You can see that he's not in the perfect condition physically, but he makes a lot of runs and that can stretch one team. "So everything I was expecting, he delivered." Amorim is also aware that despite winning the trophy, there is still work to be done when they return to Carrington this week. Captain Bruno Fernandes described the team performance as "lazy" in a post-match interview with American broadcaster NBC and wants his team-mates to give more ahead of the start of the new season. He said: "We need to be really consistent. We already knew that we had two weeks, this will not change in two weeks, but we are better. "I think it's the perfect feeling to go back to Carrington. I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. "We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things."

Trump's Immigrant Crackdown in New York: More Arrests, Longer Detention

When President Trump returned to power, Democratic officials and immigrant communities braced for the prospect of mass raids in New York City, with predictions of roundups at migrant shelters, restaurant kitchens and street corners, and federal agents flooding schools, hospitals and even churches. But a starkly different reality has emerged in America's largest city during the first six months of Mr. Trump's second term. Unlike in Los Angeles and other parts of the country, immigration agents in New York have, for the most part, employed a much simpler strategy. They have had immigrants come to them. New federal data shows that half the migrants arrested in the New York City area since Jan. 20 have been detained after being summoned to the federal immigration offices in Manhattan or to the immigration courts there. They come for routine and mandated appearances, with judges typically determining whether someone who is in the country unlawfully can be deported or is eligible for asylum. Instead, in recent months, hundreds of people have been handcuffed without notice, largely out of public view. As the use of that tactic has accelerated, so have detentions. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested at least 2,365 immigrants in the region between late January and the end of June, a nearly 200 percent increase from the five months before Mr. Trump took office, according to the data. The new figures offer the clearest picture yet of the president's crackdown in the city with the country's largest immigrant population. Despite that distinction, New York has not topped the list of cities with the most immigrant arrests, even if apprehensions are above Biden-era levels.
