LMC's ‘Tiranga Yatra' celebrates city's ranking in cleanliness survey

Lucknow: To mark the city's third rank as Swachh Sehar in the national Swachh Survekshan 2025, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) organized a Tiranga Yatra on Friday.
The march was taken out to thank the residents for their participation in cleanliness initiatives.
The yatra began from LMC headquarters at 7am and passing through Mayfair and Hazratganj crossings, reached the BJP state headquarters, and culminated at LMC. Mayor Sushma Kharkwal garlanded the statues of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the march, reaffirming commitment to cleanliness and civic responsibility.
The mayor acknowledged the role of citizens and municipal workers in achieving the city's ranking and appreciated their contribution.
"This achievement belongs to every citizen, sanitation worker, and municipal employee. Together, you have transformed Lucknow into a model city for cleanliness," she said.
Officials and staff from Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan (LSA) and Lion Enviro (LSG) also participated in the event. Students and teachers from Aminabad Inter College, along with members of the public, joined the yatra.
Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, additional commissioners Lalit Kumar, Arun Kumar Gupta, and Arvind Kumar Rao, Jalkal GM Kuldeep Singh, senior tax officers, chief engineers, zonal officers, sanitary officials, safai mitras, and others were present.

Akbarnagar to Basant Kunj: Lko dist admn meets residents to help create jobs
The district administration held a small public meeting at the Basant Kunj Housing Scheme on Monday. The meeting focused on connecting residents displaced from former Akbarnagar to Basant Kunj, with government schemes, addressing livelihood concerns, and resolving basic civic issues. Chairing the meeting, divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob directed concerned departments to conduct a fresh survey through District Urban Development Authority (DUDA) to identify eligible street vendors and link them to the PM Svanidhi scheme. These vendors will be provided designated vending zones for livelihood support. Simultaneously, skilled workers will be registered under the labour department, and employment camps will be organised. She emphasised that displaced residents should be prioritised in schemes like PM Mudra, PM Vishwakarma, and self-employment programmes. Training sessions will be provided in trades such as electrician, mechanic, plumber, tailor, mobile repair, solar technician, gym trainer, and carpenter to enhance employability. Officials were instructed to prepare a comprehensive employment plan in coordination with all departments. During the Chaupal, residents flagged several civic issues, including irregular water supply, clogged chambers, poor sanitation, and irregular waste collection. Responding to these complaints, Jacob ordered immediate redressal and instructed the LMC to set up a dedicated control room at the site to monitor basic services. Officials informed that 17 individuals have already benefited from the CM Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme, and 90 labour cards have been issued. The Commissioner instructed that registered workers should be provided employment in construction or as security personnel. In terms of infrastructure, she directed the city transport department to establish an electric vehicle charging station in Basant Kunj. Additionally, shops built under the housing scheme will be allotted to self-help groups by DUDA to promote local commerce and reduce the need for residents to travel for basic goods. To ensure access to official documents, a three-day camp will be organised for the issuance of income certificates, caste certificates, Aadhaar cards, and ration cards.

Rich tributes paid to martyrs to mark Kargil Vijay Divas
On Kargil Vijay Divas in Dharwad on Saturday, rich tributes were paid to the heroes of the Kargil war. Members of North Karnataka Sainik Welfare Association, volunteers of NCC volunteers, Scouts and Guides and students of various schools and colleges came together to pay tributes to the martyrs. Hubballi-Dharwad Mayor Jyoti Patil laid a wreath at the Kargil memorial located in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Dharwad. NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides too took part in the programme and observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to the martyrs. As many as 533 Indian soldiers lost their lives during the Kargil war and of them, 13 were from Karnataka. Mayor Jyoti Patil said that it is the bounden duty of every citizen to respect and remember the sacrifice of the brave soldiers. These programmes should motivate the younger generation to be ready to serve their motherland, she said. Earlier, a Tiranga Yatra was taken out by the participants from Gandhi Chowk to the Kargil memorial in which hundreds of people from different walks of life took part carrying the tricolour, braving a spell of rain. On the Kargil Vijay Divas, students from various schools and colleges, members of various organisations and political parties paid tributes to the martyrs by taking out rallies holding placards praising their sacrifice. In Hubballi too, rich tributes were paid to the war heroes by various organisations and in schools and colleges.

Dirty credit war erupts over Chandigarh's podium finish in cleanliness survey

City roads are in poor state and infrastructure is depleting with MC crying for funds, but the mayor is focusing on celebrations.' Mayor Babla, however, said the event was a sincere attempt to celebrate the city's collective achievement in cleanliness. She extended heartfelt congratulations to the city's sanitation workers, officials and citizens, crediting their unified efforts for this national recognition. Key action points were discussed including intensive cleaning drives in backlanes and inner colonies; enhanced door-to-door waste collection mechanisms; strengthened monitoring of public spaces and waste hotspots; citizen awareness campaigns and feedback initiatives; and collaboration with RWAs, schools, and market bodies for grassroots engagement.' 'I urge councillors to lead by example in their wards by spearheading cleanliness awareness campaigns and encouraging public participation in the city's sanitation efforts,' Babla said.
