The demolitions are part of intensified security measures following the
Pahalgam terror attack
, where gunmen opened fire on tourists in Baisaran meadow on April 22, killing 26 people, including a Nepali citizen, and injuring several others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had vowed to pursue the killers "to the ends of the earth," and the subsequent
security crackdown
has seen a wave of demolitions and encounters.
Earlier, authorities demolished properties linked to other terror suspects, including Zakir Ahmad Ganie in Kulgam and LeT commander Shahid Ahmad Kuttay in Chotipora, Shopian. Ganie was believed to have been active since 2023, while Kuttay had allegedly been involved in anti-national activities for over three years. Controlled demolitions were carried out to avoid damage to neighbouring houses, according to officials.

The crackdown has also seen the houses of Adil Hussain Thoker, also known as Adil Guree, Asif Sheikh in Awantipora, and Ahsan Sheikh in Pulwama demolished. Intelligence reports suggest Adil Guree had travelled legally to Pakistan in 2018, received terror training, and returned to Jammu and Kashmir last year to aid Pakistani terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack.
In addition to the demolitions, security forces killed a Lashkar-e-Taiba associate, Altaf Lalli, during an encounter in Bandipora on Friday. Two police personnel were injured in the exchange of fire but are reported to be in stable condition.

EAM Jaishankar roasts Oppn over India's ‘new normal' policy

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday lashed out at the Opposition over feigning ignorance over the term 'India's new normal' and coined a new name 'Modi normal' to elucidate the new defining strategy of the country in responding to acts of terror and crushing terrorists as well as their masterminds, irrespective of their location. Joining the Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said that some members raised hue and cry over the term 'new normal' and hence he was explaining India's new security doctrine via 'Modi normal' and 'Congress normal'. He said that the 'Modi normal' has clearly laid out guidelines and principles on matters of national security that remain steadfast and non-negotiable. 'Terrorists will not be treated as proxies, cross-border terror will get an appropriate response, talks and terror won't go together, we won't give into nuclear blackmailing, and blood and water won't flow together,' he told the House, outlining the redefined national strategy under the Modi government. Notably, the 'new normal' policy came into being after the Modi government gave full operational freedom to the forces during Operation Sindoor and stated that any act of terror on Indian soil will now be seen as an attack on India's sovereignty and therefore will be responded to by the armed forces in the strongest possible manner. EAM Jaishankar further said that India's Operation Sindoor did a global service by destroying hubs of global terror in Pakistan. 'Bahalwapur and Muridke remain the biggest centres of nurturing terrorists and spreading terrorism in India and abroad. Our forces reduced it to dust; they did a global service and are being suitably applauded by all,' he said. Lambasting the 'sceptical' Opposition, he said that there are ample examples of Pakistani military establishments facing the fury of Indian forces, but there are some who continue to undermine our security forces for certain political motives. The Minister said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a candid confession about Indian military strikes pulverising its military installations, but this fails to convince those who continue to remain sceptical of the Army's accomplishments. 'Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif admitted that General Munir called him, saying that Indian ballistic missiles hit their Noor Khan air base and missiles like Brahmos targeted their provinces like Rawalpindi,' he said and lamented that the political parties back home are decrying the great achievements of the Indian Armed Forces for scoring political points.

Nithari case: SC dismisses 14 appeals challenging acquittal of Surendra Koli

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed as many as 14 appeals against the acquittal of accused Surendra Koli in the sensational 2006 Nithari serial killings case. It said only those recoveries, which are made from a place accessible to the accused only, can be admitted as evidence in a case primarily hinging on circumstantial evidence. Live Events The top court last year agreed to examine separate pleas, including those filed by the CBI and the Uttar Pradesh government, challenging the Allahabad High Court's decision acquitting Koli on October 16, 2023. One of the pleas was filed by the father of one of the victims challenging the high court's verdict. Moninder Singh Pandher and his domestic help Koli were accused of rape and murder of people, mostly children from their neighbourhood in Nithari in Uttar Pradesh. Koli was awarded the death penalty on September 28, 2010 by the trial court. The high court acquitted Pandher and Koli in the death penalty case, holding the prosecution's failure to prove their guilt "beyond reasonable doubt" and called it a "botched up" investigation. Reversing the death sentence given to Koli in 12 cases and Pandher in two cases, the high court said the probe was "nothing short of a betrayal of public trust by responsible agencies".

Bengaluru woman held for promoting anti-India propaganda of Al-Qaeda affiliate

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested a woman from Bengaluru for allegedly promoting the anti-national propaganda of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), a banned terror outfit, officials said on Wednesday. The accused used to post provocative speeches by AQIS leader Maulana Assim Umar and slain Al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki.(Pexel/Representative Image) The accused, Shama Parveen Ansari, apprehended from Bengaluru on Tuesday, was in touch with Pakistani entities via phone and email. She used to post provocative content on social media, calling for an "armed revolution or jihad" against the Indian government and spreading discord in the country, they said. She used to run two Facebook pages and an Instagram handle comprising more than 10,000 followers to share inflammatory and anti-India content of the AQIS and some other radical preachers, an ATS release said. Ansari, who was arrested from her residence in RT Nagar area of Bengaluru, was linked to one of the four persons arrested a week ago by the ATS for sharing such content through their Instagram accounts, said the release. On July 23, the ATS arrested four men from Delhi, Noida, Ahmedabad and Modasa town in Gujarat for allegedly sharing radical and provocative content, including jihadi propaganda videos of AQIS on social media platforms, it said. Through these videos, the four men used to incite Muslims youth to uproot India's democratic system and implement 'sharia' (Islamic law) in the country through armed rebellion, the release said. "One of the arrested accused, Mohammad Faiq from Delhi, had posted provocative videos calling for jihad and terror attacks in India. It was revealed that he had downloaded this content from two Facebook and one Instagram accounts and re-posted on his Instagram account after some editing," Deputy Inspector General of Police, ATS, Sunil Joshi said. It also came to light that Faiq was in contact with the actual user of those three accounts having over 10,000 followers, Joshi said. Subsequently, the ATS found these three pages were operated by Shama Parveen Ansari, residing at RT Nagar in Bengaluru. On Tuesday, a team of ATS Gujarat, in cooperation with central agencies and state police, arrested Ansari and brought here on Wednesday on transit remand, the official said. Ansari used to post provocative speeches by AQIS leader Maulana Assim Umar and slain Al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki, he said. "The content called for armed revolution or jihad against the Government of India, Ghazwa-E-Hind, terrorist attacks and inciting Indian Muslim youth to carry out violence on non-believers or kafirs," Joshi said, adding she was in contact with Pakistani entities via phone and email. "Ansari had also posted a video of Maulana Abdul Aziz of Lahore's Lal Masjid. In the video, he was seen encouraging Muslims to wage armed struggle to overthrow the Indian government and spread discord in the country based on religious and caste divisions," Joshi added.
