Israel releases Palestinian prisoner controversially arrested aged 13
Ahmad Manasra has been reunited with his family, his lawyer Khaled Zabarqa told CNN.
'Ahmad has completed his 10-year sentence and he is a free person now,' Zabarqa said. 'The Israeli authorities have imposed restriction on the family as far as holding a welcome ceremony for Ahmad or talking to the media. '
Ahmad Manasra was arrested and imprisoned in 2015 after being caught with his cousin Hassan who stabbed two Israelis in East Jerusalem.
Hassan was shot dead at the scene while Manasra was run over by a car.
Manasra's case gained international attention after a video emerged of crowds shouting abuse at him after the incident while he lies motionless, seriously injured and crying out. Other footage allegedly shows Israeli officials interrogating Manasra under duress as he is visibly shaken and vulnerable, according to the Palestinian Prisoner's Society.
He was sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder in 2016, despite Israeli courts' recognizing he had not been involved in the stabbings, the Palestinian Prisoner's Society added. His sentence was revised down to nine and a half years following an appeal in 2017
International groups have repeatedly called on Israeli authorities for his release over the years over concerns of his treatment and extended stays in solitary confinement, coupled with mental health issues and a schizophrenia diagnosis.
'His physical and medical condition is very difficult as he suffers from head injuries and physiological mental health as he was in solitary confinement and was subjected to harsh interrogation when he was a child,' his lawyer said.
Israel's prison authorities confirmed Manasra was being released on Thursday, adding 'Israel is a state of law, we don't torture people here.' — CNN

Israeli forces killed at least 36 Palestinians and injured others near an aid distribution site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Khan Younis, reported Reuters. The US-backed organization denied the incident, while the Israeli army said it only fired warning shots at suspects, amid growing controversary over aid distribution process in the war-torn enclave. Shooting Palestinians At dawn on Saturday, the Israeli troops opened gunfire at Palestinians heading to an aid distribution site in Khan Younis, killing at least 36 people, according to Gaza's Health Ministry and Nasser Hospital. The Israeli military said it fired warning shots at suspects moving near its forces, at a time when the distribution site was not active. It said it was investigating the incident. However, an eyewitness told Reuters that there were no warnings before the shooting. 'We thought they came out to organize us so we can get aid, suddenly (I) saw the jeeps coming from one side, and the tanks from the other and started shooting at us,' Gaza resident Mohamed al-Khalidi said. GHF Response The GHF denied any incidents or fatalities on Saturday, adding that it warned people not to head to its sites in the dark. 'We have repeatedly warned aid seekers not to travel to our sites overnight and early morning hours,' the GHF said. 'The reported (Israeli military) activity resulting in fatalities occurred hours before our sites opened and our understanding is most of the casualties occurred several kilometers away from the nearest GHF site,' it said in a statement. The GHF has sparked worldwide anger over its aid distribution mechanism that caused mounting death toll near distribution sites. The Israeli and US-backed organization works with private American contractors to get aid supplies into Gaza. Global Condemnation The GHF model bypasses the UN-led system as Israel claims that Hamas loots aid shipments, an accusation the Palestinian movement denies. Under the GHF operation system, Palestinian aid seekers are required to travel to distribution sites each week to get one package per family. However, the UN and other international organizations have criticized the GHF operation model, refusing to cooperate with the organization amid fears it aims to force the displacement of Palestinians and saying there is no evidence that Hamas steals aid. Moreover, the UN has called the GHF model 'unsafe' and a 'breach of humanitarian impartiality standards.' Earlier in July, Amnesty International accused Israel and the GHF of using starvation tactics as a weapon of war against Palestinians as part of the Israeli ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip. It also said that Israel has turned aid seeking into a 'booby trap for desperate starved Palestinians' by preventing UN and other key humanitarian organizations from distributing certain aid items and by maintaining the GHF 'militarized aid scheme.' Rising Deaths Shooting incidents near GHF distribution sites have been on the rise in recent weeks. On July 15, 2025, the UN Rights Office said that since May 27, 2025, at least 875 people in Gaza while seeking aid; 674 of them near the GHF sites. The remaining 201 were killed while seeking aid on the routes of aid convoys or near aid convoys run by the UN or its partners. Furthermore, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, voiced deep concerns over civilian deaths near aid sites amid the spread of deadly malnutrition among children. In the light of this, the UNRWA Director of Communications, Juliette Touma, said: 'Our teams on the ground – UNRWA teams and other United Nations teams – have spoken to survivors of these killings, these starving children included, who were shot at while on their way to pick up very little food.' Touma warned that babies are dying as a result of acute malnutrition caused by Israel's blockade on aid entry into Gaza. 'We've been banned from bringing any humanitarian assistance into Gaza for more than four months now,' she said, pointing to a 'significant increase' in child malnutrition since the Israeli blockade began on 2 March. Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al Yamahi strongly condemned Israel's dangerous and bloody escalation against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday. In a statement, Al Yamahi described the systematic starvation and deadly siege in Gaza, leaving vulnerable populations to face death, as a full-fledged crime occurring before a silent world. He voiced calls on the international community to shirk its moral, legal, and humanitarian responsibilities towards a people facing annihilation through mass starvation, a scenario deemed unbearable to human conscience. Al Yamahi also condemned the Israeli occupation forces' bombing of places of worship in Gaza, describing it as a war crime and holding the occupying forces fully responsible for the attack. Gaza Civil Defense Says Israeli Attacks Kill 26 Near Two Aid Centers
Gaza's civil defense agency on Saturday said Israeli attacks killed 26 people and wounded more than 100 near two aid centers in the south of the Palestinian territory. Agency spokesman Mahmud Basal told AFP that 22 were killed near a site southwest of Khan Yunis and four near another center northwest of Rafah, blaming "Israeli gunfire" for both. One eyewitness said he headed to the Al-Tina area of Khan Yunis before dawn with five of his relatives to try to get food when "Israeli soldiers" started shooting. "My relatives and I were unable to get anything," Abdul Aziz Abed, 37, told AFP. "Every day I go there and all we get is bullets and exhaustion instead of food." The Israeli military said it was "looking into" the claims when contacted by AFP. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify tolls and details provided by the agency and other parties. The war in Gaza, sparked by militant group Hamas's deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has created dire humanitarian conditions for the local population. The more than two million people who live in the densely populated coastal territory are facing severe shortages of food and other essentials, and doctors have reported a spike in acute malnutrition. Deaths of people waiting for handouts in huge crowds near aid distribution centers have become a regular occurrence, with the Palestinian authorities blaming Israeli fire. The civil defense agency reported that nine people were shot and killed near the same aid point in the Al-Shakoush area northwest of Rafah on Friday. The US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which took over the running of aid distribution in late May, said 20 people died in Khan Yunis on Wednesday. But it blamed "agitators in the crowd... armed and affiliated with Hamas" for creating "a chaotic and dangerous surge" and firing at aid-seekers. The previous day, the UN said it had recorded 875 people killed in Gaza while trying to get food, including 674 "in the vicinity of GHF sites", since it began operating.
