Chinese automakers grab record hybrid market share in Europe

[LONDON] Chinese automakers continued to expand their European foothold in May, capturing the highest share ever of hybrid-car sales and the biggest slice of the electric vehicle (EV) market in 10 months.
Manufacturers led by BYD and Saic Motor's MG surpassed 9 per cent share in both of those categories, based on figures from industry researcher Dataforce. Including combustion-engine models, European registrations of Chinese-branded cars topped 5 per cent for the first time.
The latest figures add to evidence that Chinese carmakers are largely succeeding in penetrating one of the world's biggest automotive markets. BYD executive Stella Li said in June that Europe is the Chinese EV leader's most important region.
The bulk of the growth in Europe has come in EVs and hybrids, where Chinese manufacturers can leverage their strengths in battery technology and software. Their EV sales are now back to mid-2024 levels, before the European Union introduced tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars. A probe by the bloc found that aid from Beijing had given its companies an unfair boost.
Hybrids, which are not affected by the EU duties, have seen even more dramatic growth. In May 2024, Chinese brands had barely 1 per cent of the market. A year later, they accounted for 12 per cent of plug-in hybrid sales and 7 per cent of mild hybrids.
MG, the British-origin sports car brand whose parent is a Chinese state-owned company, was hit with a 45 per cent EV tariff. It has leaned into hybrids while pulling back from sales of pure EVs, responding to the new environment 'by focusing on other electrified solutions', said Felipe Munoz, an analyst at automotive adviser Jato Dynamics.
'BYD continued to shine and increase its sales despite the tariffs,' he said.
The company is now targeting the most popular segments with the Dolphin Surf, an urban runabout, and the Atto 2, a compact sport utility vehicle.
'Instead of stopping them, the tariffs are forcing brands such as BYD to introduce more affordable models in the entry segments,' he added. BLOOMBERG

China faces growing calls from policy advisers and economists to explore using stablecoins for cross-border payments, as the US moves to entrench the US dollar's dominance through crypto technology. While China has not formally embraced stablecoins – digital tokens pegged to traditional currencies – and maintains a sweeping ban on crypto activities, recent remarks from senior central bank officials have given fresh momentum to discussions about their potential role in global payments. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) governor Pan Gongsheng said in June that stablecoins could revolutionise international finance, particularly as rising geopolitical tensions highlight the fragility of traditional payment systems, which he warned can be politicised and used as a sanction tool. At the same Shanghai event, former central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said US dollar-linked stablecoins could facilitate dollarisation. Other mainland and Hong Kong financial officials talked about the potential for yuan-based stablecoins to support China's long-running effort to promote its currency on the world stage. Beijing has long been wary of cryptocurrencies, viewing it as a threat to financial stability and capital controls. But economists now see an opening, fuelled in part by the Trump administration's growing support for digital tokens. Morgan Stanley suggests China could use Hong Kong to trial offshore yuan-based stablecoins that would avoid violations of Beijing's strict capital rules. 'Stablecoins are not new currencies, but new distribution channels for existing ones,' said Robin Xing, chief China economist at Morgan Stanley. Sign Up Sign Up Just hours before Pan and other Chinese officials spoke at the Jun 18 Lujiazui Forum, the US Senate passed a bill regulating stablecoins, in a major win for the crypto industry and a boost for US President Donald Trump's digital asset agenda. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a Jun 19 X post that stablecoins could strengthen, not threaten, the US dollar's dominance. He told Bloomberg TV on Monday (Jun 30) that global users are likely to favour US-backed stablecoins over central bank digital currencies from Europe or China, citing greater trust in the private sector under US regulation than the risk of government control elsewhere. Stablecoins, typically backed by traditional currencies and issued by private firms, are gaining traction as a faster, cheaper option for cross-border payments. Most are pegged to the US dollar and backed by US assets such as short-term Treasuries, with total supply projected to reach US$3.7 trillion by 2030. In response, Chinese economists are urging the development of yuan-linked alternatives. chief economist Shen Jianguang warned that without such efforts, China risks falling behind in the race for next-generation currency leadership. Founder Richard Liu reportedly told staff the company plans to apply for stablecoin licenses in all major markets to cut cross-border payment costs by 90 per cent and reduce settlement time to under 10 seconds. Hong Kong has recently introduced its own regulatory framework for fiat-referenced stablecoins, offering licenses to issuers operating in the city. and Ant Group are among the first tech giants expected to apply. Shanghai-listed Zhejiang China Commodities City Group, operator of the world's largest wholesale goods market, has also said it plans to seek a license. Offshore yuan stablecoins could help China take advantage of mounting global unease with US dollar dominance, especially after it was used as a tool of financial pressure following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Interest in the yuan is growing, with more than 30 per cent of China's goods trade settled in the currency in February, the highest in a decade, though its share in global payments remains modest. The growing interest in stablecoins comes as China's own state-backed digital currency, the e-CNY, has struggled to gain traction both at home and abroad. A separate cross-border payments initiative, mBridge, is facing an uncertain future after a main participant, the Bank for International Settlements, pulled out over concerns it could be used to bypass sanctions. Pan recently announced plans for an international e-CNY centre in Shanghai, signalling continued interest in promoting its use for trade. China should take a 'dual track' approach to bolster the yuan's global use, according to Li Yang, chairman of the state-backed National Institution for Finance and Development and a former PBOC adviser. That would involve continuing traditional efforts, such as expanding currency swaps and the yuan-based Cips settlement system, while also leveraging Hong Kong's financial institutions to promote offshore yuan-linked stablecoins. For now, stablecoins are mostly used for crypto trading instead of business payments, and regulators still need to address risks such as fraud and financial crime. While many countries are exploring regulations, key questions remain, such as whether stablecoins should be treated as currencies or financial assets. Chinese stablecoins may face limits without broader economic reforms, according to Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University professor and author of the book The Future of Money: How the Digital Revolution Is Transforming Currencies and Finance. 'Yuan-linked stablecoins issued in Hong Kong are unlikely to gain much traction in the absence of unification of onshore and offshore exchange markets,' he said. But stablecoins, he added, could nudge Beijing towards change. [WASHINGTON] The United States, Japan, India and Australia pledged on Tuesday to work together to ensure a stable supply of critical minerals, as worries grow over China's dominance in resources vital to new technologies. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed his counterparts from the so-called 'Quad' to Washington in a shift of focus to Asia, after spending much of his first six months on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and on President Donald Trump's domestic priorities such as migration. The four countries said in a joint statement that they were establishing the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, aimed at 'collaborating on securing and diversifying' supply chains. They offered little detail but made clear the goal was to reduce reliance on China, which has used restrictions as leverage as the United States in turn curbs its access to semiconductors and as Trump threatens steep tariffs - including on Quad countries. 'Reliance on any one country for processing and refining critical minerals and derivative goods production exposes our industries to economic coercion, price manipulation and supply chain disruptions,' the statement said. The ministers were careful not to mention China by name but voiced 'serious concerns regarding dangerous and provocative actions' in the South China Sea and East China Sea that 'threaten peace and stability in the region.' In brief remarks alongside the other ministers, Rubio said he has 'personally been very focused' on diversifying supply chains and wanted 'real progress.' US refocus on Asia The four-way partnership was first conceived by late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who saw an alliance of democracies surrounding China - which has repeatedly alleged that the Quad is a way to contain it. Rubio had welcomed the Quad foreign ministers on January 21 in his first meeting after Trump's inauguration, seen as a sign the new administration would prioritise engagement with like-minded countries to counter China. But to the surprise of many, China has not topped the early agenda of Trump, who has spoken respectfully about his counterpart Xi Jinping and reached a truce with Beijing to avoid a wider trade war between the world's two largest economies. Trump is expected to travel to India later this year for a Quad summit. Both the Indian and Japanese foreign ministers said that they wanted the Quad to focus on a 'free and open Indo-Pacific' - a phrasing that is a veiled allusion to opposing Chinese dominance in Asia. 'It is essential that nations of the Indo-Pacific have the freedom of choice, so essential to make right decisions on development and security,' Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said. At Jaishankar's urging, the Quad condemned a May attack on the Indian side of Kashmir that killed mostly Hindu civilians and called for 'the perpetrators, organizers and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay.' India in May launched air strikes in Pakistan, which it blamed for the attack. Pakistan denied responsibility and responded with its own attacks on the Indian military. In a key concern for Japan, the Quad condemned North Korea for its 'destabilizing launches' of missiles and insisted on its 'complete denuclearisation.' Trump, in one of the most startling moves of his first term, met with North Korea's reclusive leader Kim Jong Un, helping ease tensions but producing no lasting agreement. Despite common ground on China, Quad members have differed on other hotspots, with the joint statement not mentioning Ukraine or Iran. Toyota delays EV plans to boost petrol-fuelled SUV output

[DETROIT] Toyota Motor is tapping the brakes on plans to build electric vehicles (EVs) in the US to free up manufacturing capacity for a popular petrol-powered SUV. The Japanese automaker plans to begin producing a new electric SUV at its plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, starting in 2028, more than a year later than planned, according to the company. The unnamed plug-in model was slated to be produced at Toyota's plant in Princeton, Indiana, but instead will be built in Kentucky. The move will allow the company to boost the output of its hot-selling Grand Highlander SUV, which is offered as a petrol-only or hybrid petrol-electric model. The new battery-powered model will join another as-yet unnamed three-row electric SUV that Toyota now plans to begin producing at the Georgetown plant in late 2026, rather than early next year, a company spokesperson said. The EV production shift from the Princeton plant to Kentucky was reported earlier by Automotive News. The latest delays comes as demand for EVs has softened in the US and may weaken further after the Senate passed legislation that would end popular tax credits that have helped buyers afford those vehicles. Toyota said as recently as May that it plans to offer seven EVs for sale in the US by mid-2027, including the pair of US-made SUVs. Total EV sales rose 7.3 per cent in the US last year to some 1.3 million vehicles, according to Cox Automotive. But Toyota delivered fewer than 30,000 all-electric in the US in 2024, even as its sales of hybrid petrol-electrics skyrocketed. At the same time, hybrid-electric and petrol-powered SUVs are in high demand. Toyota sold 11,577 Grand Highlander mid-sized SUVs last month, ending June with just a three-day supply of them at its dealers. 'That vehicle has actually been our fastest-turning product in the lineup,' David Christ, the head of Toyota brand sales in the US, told reporters on Tuesday (Jul 1) in a briefing. BLOOMBERG
