NYC school makes history with first-ever national banner for inclusion
The honor, presented by ESPN and Special Olympics New York, marks the highest recognition for a Unified Champion School and celebrates the school's commitment to inclusion through sports and student leadership.

As the banner was revealed, the room filled with applause and excitement.
'Today's a very special day for me 'cause I've been a part of the Special Olympics for around four years now,' said Mohamed Kebbeh, a 17-year-old soccer player at the school. Reflecting on the moment, Kebbeh added, 'It really meant so much to me to really have the first ever national band.'
The Unified Champion Schools program brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete on the same teams, fostering a culture of acceptance and teamwork.
Stacey Hengsterman, President and CEO of Special Olympics New York, highlighted the growth of the program across the city.
'Special Olympics New York and the New York City's public schools have taken our partnership to a record level,' she said. 'In the past three years, we have grown not one unified team, and we've given the city hawks a little competition.' Hengsterman also noted, 'Now, we have more than 40 high schools and middle schools competing unified across the city.'
Coach Joe Stewart emphasized the deeper meaning behind the recognition. 'Come fly with the Hawks, look for those that are left out, and welcome them. You will benefit them as much as they will. And just like the City Hawks, you may make history together with them.'

Read the NFL commissioner's memo to staff after Monday's shooting at its NYC offices
National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a note to staff encouraging them to work remotely or take the day off following Monday's fatal shooting at its New York City office building. An NFL employee was seriously injured in the attack. Goodell said in the note sent Monday that the employee was in stable condition. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday on news channel PIX11 that a note was found on the shooter saying he had CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, and that the gunman appeared to be targeting the NFL over CTE. CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a contentious issue in contact sports like American football. The gunman killed four people, including an NYPD officer and an executive at asset management firm Blackstone, after entering the office building at 345 Park Avenue. KPMG also occupies the building. Police identified the gunman, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as 27-year-old Shane Tamura. Here's the memo Commissioner Goodell sent to employees: NFL Employees, As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are otherwise safe and accounted for, and the building has nearly been cleared. We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others. Please continue to pay close attention to GSOC notices for all available emergency information. These communications allow us to ensure that you are safe. As you know, there are significant resources available to all employees, including grief counselors. Shortly, HR will send you more information on the available resources and how to take advantage of them. Those based in New York should work remotely tomorrow. Mass transit options to MetLife Stadium from New York City
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (PIX11) — The 80,000 capacity MetLife Stadium is known not only as the home for the New York Giants and Jets, but also as the go-to destination for dozens of concerts and events, including the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. The stadium, however, sits in East Rutherford, New Jersey and driving may not always be an option, so below are some options for getting there by train or bus from New York City. Things To Do Around NYC Commuters heading to MetLife Stadium by train are advised to head to Penn Station and take any NJ Transit train to go to Secaucus Junction. At Secaucus Junction, visitors can hop on a direct shuttle train to the Meadowlands Rail Station. More Local News If the train is not an option, or for those who might simply prefer the bus, head to New York Port Authority Bus Terminal, where Coach USA provides express service. Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island marks 20th anniversary
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Parks are popular summer destinations, and one world-class open space is celebrating an anniversary. Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island was built in 2005. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the facility is hosting several special events. More Local News The track will be open for a public community run on Thursday, June 12, at 6 p.m. New York City FC II will play four home matches at the iconic stadium on August 8th. Runners of all ages and students hold championships and qualifying meets. Lou Vasquez has been the director of Icahn Stadium for 20 years. His love of running began as a student athlete at the former Downing Stadium. 'There's so much history here. World records have been set here. It's an inspiration to the athletes, Come on down and run the track where Usain Bolt broke the world record,' he said. The city created the track and field space in 1936, originally called it Triborough Stadium. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 and meets specifications for local, national, international and Olympic events. The New York Football Club donated $3 million to upgrade the interior soccer field in 2024. In September, it hosted the first professional soccer matches. In July, the track will be replaced with the same surface used by the Olympics. This is the peak park season. Field trips and festivals happen all summer on the island.
