Max Verstappen bests his F1 title rivals Piastri and Norris for British Grand Prix pole
Verstappen went fastest by 0.103 of a second to beat Piastri's time, with Norris third, 0.015 further back, after both of the McLaren drivers made small but costly errors. Lewis Hamilton, a record nine-time winner of his home race, was also in the fight for pole but had to settle for fifth after a relatively slow end to his lap. Verstappen had seemed pessimistic about having the pace to challenge the McLarens at Silverstone – Ferrari had been closer than Red Bull in practice – and he described his car as 'so difficult' over the radio partway through the session. Even so, he found the pace for pole.
'At Silverstone you have to be really committed, and that's really enjoyable,' Verstappen said. 'It's a big boost for the team as well and excited to go racing tomorrow.'
Piastri lost time with a slight slide in the last corner on his final run, while Norris clipped a curb on an otherwise strong lap.
Piastri heads into Sunday's race with a 15-point lead over Norris, while Verstappen is third, 61 points off the lead.

LONDON: World number one Aryna Sabalenka marched into the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Sunday as her former doubles partner Elize Mertens fell short of upsetting the US Open champion. Sabalenka has never reached a final at the All England Club but is the player to beat as the only one of the top six seeds in the women's draw still standing. The 27-year-old missed last year's Wimbledon due to injury and was banned in 2022 as part of a blanket suspension on Russian and Belarusian athletes due to the invasion of Ukraine. Sabalenka looks determined to make up for lost time and, just like in her third-round victory over Emma Raducanu, had to overcome a tough test from Mertens to progress 6-4, 7-6 (7/4). The pair won the 2019 US Open and 2021 Australian Open together as a doubles partnership, but Sabalenka has now won their last 10 meetings against each other in singles. 'It's tough to play against someone you know quite close, it's tricky facing her,' said Sabalenka. 'I know how smart she is, I know she is going to fight until the very end. 'She really challenged me today and I'm super happy with the win.' A fast start from Sabalenka saw her stretch out to a 4-1 first set lead, only for Mertens to battle back and level at 4-4. The three-time Grand Slam winner responded in style, winning eight of the next 11 points, to take the set. Mertens got the early break in the second, but the world number 23 could not hold on. Sabalenka broke back to tie up the second set at 3-3 and after six straight holds of serve, the match was decided in a tie-break. Mertens again had the early advantage, but Sabalenka's blistering ground strokes forced the Belgian onto the back foot before a volleyed winner sealed victory in just over 90 minutes on court. Sabalenka faces Germany's Laura Siegemund in the last eight on Tuesday. 'It's such a beautiful tournament. I always dreamed of winning it,' she added of potentially claiming a first Wimbledon title. 'I'm just trying to give my best and really hope for the best.'

Hülkenberg's long wait is over after first podium finish in his 239th F1 race
Fifteen years, 239 races, one trophy. Nico Hülkenberg finally made it onto the podium with third place at the British Grand Prix on Sunday. That ended the longest wait in career starts for a driver before claiming a top-three finish in Formula 1 history. To do this, he had to hold off none other than Lewis Hamilton, so often unbeatable in Britain. 'I was thinking that he's going to give it all here in front of his home crowd,' Hülkenberg said. 'And I was like: 'Sorry, guys, but it's also my day.'' Starting from 19th on the grid, a perfectly judged drive in the rain and smart strategy saw the 37-year-old German outperform his uncompetitive Sauber car as other contenders spun off the road. He showed off his attacking skill by overtaking Lance Stroll for third and then had the toughest test of all – holding off seven-time champion Hamilton, who'd won his home race nine times. He was mobbed by his Sauber team after climbing out of the car and before climbing up to the podium to receive a long-awaited trophy. Hülkenberg made his F1 debut in 2010. In 2011 and for three years, from 2020 through 2022, he was without a full-time race drive at all, except for a few emergency call-ups when other drivers caught COVID-19. Down the years, he's raced for many teams, but never a true contender – Williams, Force India, Sauber, Force India again, Renault, Racing Point, Aston Martin, Haas, and Sauber again. His previous best race result was a fourth place in 2013 and another in 2016. It was the first podium finish for Sauber since Kamui Kobayashi was third at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2012 and the first podium finish for any German driver in F1 since Sebastian Vettel in 2021. Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda now has the most races of any current driver without a podium at 99, but Hülkenberg still holds the all-time record for most races without a win.
