Two SANDF members arrested for murder of Lieutenant Colonel
Two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members have been arrested in connection with the murder of a senior official.
The pair were arrested at separate locations on Sunday night by members of the Johannesburg branch of the Hawks and assisting tactical units.
Both are due in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday and are expected to face charges of murder and kidnapping.
SANDF murder suspects
The suspects, aged 36 and 51, are believed to be linked to the 2023 murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa.
Mathipa was working for the Hawks' Crime Against the State division when he was shot while driving along the N1 near Hammanskraal on 6 August 2023.
'Following the shooting, Mathipa's vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch,' confirmed Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo.
The suspects were arrested at OR Tambo International Airport and a location in Centurion on Sunday.
One of the suspects is also allegedly tied to a December 2022 kidnapping incident involving two foreign national victims at a mall in Midrand.
'During the operation, police also seized a vehicle belonging to the 36-year-old suspect. It has since been impounded for further forensic investigation,' Singo added.
Stabbing in Mpumalanga
The arrests are the second high-profile incident involving military members this past weekend.
On Saturday, two SANDF soldiers were stabbed to death by a colleague at the Macadamia military base near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
'The circumstances surrounding the incident remain the subject of ongoing inquiry, and further details will be communicated once officially verified,' stated SANDF spokesperson Prince Tshabalala.
'We appeal to the public and media to allow the investigative processes to unfold without speculation and to respect the dignity and privacy of the affected families during this difficult time,' he advised.

'The two suspects were arrested after failing to provide satisfactory reasons as to why the Chinese national was arrested and released with no record,' Mavimbela said. Hawks push ahead with Polokwane Municipality corruption case
POLOKWANE – The corruption probe into the affairs of the Polokwane Municipality will continue despite a key segment of the broader investigation being struck off the Limpopo High Court roll in the city on Tuesday due to interlocutory issues. This assurance came from the head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Maj Genl (Adv) Gopz Govender, who spoke to Polokwane Observer shortly after Judge Jane Ngobeni ruled that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) was not positioned to proceed with an urgent application compelling the municipality to hand over its gift register. The register was to be examined for potential irregularities involving Mayor John Mpe and his Makoro Foundation. As speculation intensifies, the municipality's leadership has dismissed the allegations as a political witch-hunt aimed at undermining Mpe's leadership and the foundation's achievements. Govender, however, stressed that the Hawks' investigation is impartial and driven by evidence, and not public opinion or political pressure. Shop fined R600,000 over cigarettes must donate 504 desks to schools
A Mpumalanga store found guilty of selling illicit cigarettes has been fined R600,000 and ordered to buy 504 durable, high-quality double-seater desks for local schools. Initially, the shopkeeper and two directors of the business were charged but charges were withdrawn against the individuals after the company directors entered a plea bargain with the state, and only the company was charged. According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Col Magoseni Nkosi, more than 4,000 packets of illicit cigarettes valued at R107,700 were seized during a raid in September 2024. The shopkeeper, Riaz Moolla, 42, was arrested by the Hawks Secunda-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. The two company directors, Fatima Moolla, 62, and Suliman Ismail Moolla, 67, were also charged. The provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Maj-Gen Nico Gerber commended the investigation team, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the judiciary for their hard work on the case. 'It is an interesting sentence. Criminals are again out of pocket due to their crimes. The community is benefiting from this sentence, and it will definitely help the next generation in their education,' Gerber said. The company was sentenced for contravention of the Tobacco Products Act, contravention of the Customs and Excise Act and contravention of the VAT Act. The company was given three months to comply with the judgment.
