Sabah govt committed to preserving state's cultural, multi-ethnic heritage
He said the ongoing efforts were crucial to ensure the state's cultural treasures continued to be preserved, appreciated and passed down to future generations amid rapid global changes.
'In an ever-changing world, it is vital to ensure that local culture remains relevant and is understood by both present and future generations. The younger generation are not just inheritors but also guardians of the heritage that will shape the future of this state.
'The preservation of cultural heritage is essential to ensure the continuity of a community's identity, values and traditions. I therefore hope that ethnic associations in the state will continue to promote their respective cultures, customs and languages so that they are not lost over time,' he said in a statement in conjunction with the Sabah Ethnic Day celebration here tonight.
The event was officiated by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, who was accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. Also present was Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also the State Local Government and Housing Minister.
Hajiji said efforts to preserve cultural heritage would also help attract more tourists to Sabah, in line with the state government's target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals this year.
'The spirit of goodwill in diversity is the foundation of the people's strength in this state. Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to continue nurturing the values of tolerance, mutual respect and harmony regardless of ethnic or religious background,' he said.

In contrast, Nizam said the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has focused on delivering tangible results, citing several key initiatives: Higher Education Registration Assistance Fund for B40 students, Sabah Maju Jaya Scholarship to expand higher education access, increased allocations to Yayasan Sabah for scholarships and aid, redevelopment of dilapidated rural schools, and special assistance for Sabahan students studying out of state.

Over 60,000 union members in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 4): A total of 60,764 workers in Sabah are members of registered trade unions, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said that the figure includes 22,317 employees from the government sector, 35,194 from the private sector, and 3,253 workers from statutory bodies. He added that there are currently 92 registered trade unions in Sabah, overseen by the Sabah Trade Union Affairs Department. These include 23 unions from the government sector, 52 from the private sector, and 16 representing statutory bodies. 'Sabah recorded a workforce of over 1.7 million people last year, and their collective contribution has driven the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) up to RM84.3 billion,' he said. 'This growth has significantly boosted GDP, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying, and services,' he added, in his speech at the Sabah state-level Labour Day celebration, held here today. Also present at the event were Human Resources Minister, Steven Sim; Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) president, Datuk Dr Adnan Mat; and Trade Union Affairs Department (JHEKS) director-general, Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab. Hajiji said that, in line with the era of globalisation and rapid technological advancement, he urged trade unions in the state to be more proactive in safeguarding the welfare of their members, through initiatives and programmes implemented at both federal and state levels. 'The role of trade unions is crucial as a key pillar in upholding social justice, and ensuring that every worker receives not only fair wages, but also access to skills development, workplace safety and health, comprehensive social security, and a conducive and prosperous working environment. He added that the Sabah government welcomes trade unions as strategic partners, and remains committed to empowering the workforce, supporting the trade union movement, and safeguarding workers' welfare. 'I believe Sabah can be a model state in Malaysia, in building an employment ecosystem which not only drives economic strength, but also consistently upholds the rights of workers,' he said. He also advised union leaders in Sabah who will be participating in the National-Level Trade Union Assembly in Penang on September 6 to use the opportunity to bring the voices of Sabah's workers to the national stage.

GRS-PH-BN pact for polls unlikely, says Gagasan Rakyat VP

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A three-way pact among Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional for the upcoming Sabah state election is unlikely to materialise, says a GRS leader. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah played down Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's hopes of a pact among the three major coalitions to prevent seat clashes, saying his party would surely disagree with this move. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah is one of the eight component parties in GRS. Masiung said such an alliance could confuse voters, when GRS and PH have already agreed to join forces for the state election, Sinar Harian reported. 'There's little chance of such a cooperation to be reached. But if it does materialise, we hold to the prime minister's statement on May 11 that (GRS chairman) Hajiji Noor should lead negotiations on seat allocation,' he said. The four-term Kuamut assemblyman said GRS and Sabah PH have already formed a solid working partnership, which his party intended to fully stick to. 'GRS has also lost confidence in BN-Umno because they betrayed the partnership they had forged with GRS through the 'Kinabalu Move'. 'At the same time, BN-Umno has also decided not to work with GRS. We hope the prime minister will respect our stand,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar said talks were ongoing among BN, GRS and PH to reach an understanding to avoid three-cornered contests in the state election. The PH chairman and PKR president previously hoped that all three coalitions would be able to work together for the polls. Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, announced on July 27 that GRS and PH had agreed to form an alliance for the election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also said the coalition's cooperation with PH in Sabah was 'locked in'. However, as both BN and GRS are not formally working with one another, the two coalitions are expected to clash in the state election, due to be held by the end of the year. Sabah Umno and GRS used to be allies in the state government, but their partnership collapsed after Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin tried but failed to unseat Hajiji as chief minister in January 2023, in a move dubbed the 'Kinabalu Move'.
