Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (Tape Two) review – love, grief and self-recrimination as the girls reunite

The Guardian18-04-2025

One thing you realise as you get older is that memories are plastic and that the stories you tell about your life change with every recollection, depending on who you are at the time. This is one of the themes – and indeed the mechanics – of Lost Records, a narrative adventure about four teenage girls who develop an intense friendship in rural Michigan during the summer of 1995. In the first instalment, they form a band, discover an old shack in the woods to use as a clubhouse, and encounter a supernatural force emanating from a deep hole they discover nearby. But as autumn draws in and the girls plan a climactic rock gig, tragic secrets are uncovered.
Cleverly, the story is told mostly in flashback, as the characters meet again, decades later, in their long-abandoned home town – they're older, wiser and with new perspectives on what happened to them as teenagers. Lead character Swann, a keen photographer whose video camera provides a key game interface in the first episode, is living a solitary life, while Autumn is still filled with anxiety and Nora is now an influencer. Missing is Kat whose terminal cancer diagnosis obliterates their world at the close of part one.
While the first instalment focused on the excitement and hubris of the teenage characters, this is a much darker story concentrating on the adults as they pick apart their lives. Through dialogue trees and interactive memory segments you help Swann navigate the meeting, as well as moments from the past. There is less of the video camera this time. In the first part, there were multiple occasions where you had to film certain scenes, creating a nicely personal bank of footage which could be edited and reshot. There is also much less actual gameplay: an early scene where you have to pack a box and a later stealth sequence where you sneak into Kat's bedroom are the only real moments of ludic challenge. I missed taking more of an active role.
What you get instead, are some incredibly poignant narrative scenes, as the girls battle with the reality of Kat's diagnosis and the raw ambiguity of their feelings for each other. Two moments stand out especially: Swann and Nora meeting alone one afternoon, talking and exchanging gifts, every word, every gesture, communicating a mass of unspoken feelings. Then, Swann sneaking into Kat's bedroom and helping her cut her hair before chemotherapy takes it. This is some of the most profound, sensitively structured and emotionally resonant writing about the teenage experience of love and loss I have ever encountered in a video game.
Tape Two ends on an ambiguous note, though I think this is utterly true to the experience of playing. The mysterious hole in the worlds, which the characters call 'the abyss', can be interpreted as entirely symbolic, as can all the supernatural events in the game, and this is a brave, credible narrative decision. Sometimes, there are no answers, and sometimes the magic we perceived around us when we were young turns out to have been something else entirely – perhaps just friendship or imagination, or the yearning to be something in the world.
The effect is like Stranger Things directed by Kelly Reichardt – a realist fantasy in which silence and ambiguity come to the fore. Lost Records is ultimately a game about love, grief and self-recrimination, and the different intensities of those forces as we age. By the end you miss the optimism and verve of those girls in the woods, as though you were one of them – and quite possibly, in a lot of ways, you were.

Michelle Ryan pictured back on EastEnders set ahead of epic Walford return

Michelle Ryan has been spotted back filming on the EastEnders set for the first time just weeks after her character Zoe Slater made a surprise return to the soap Michelle Ryan has been spotted back on the set of EastEnders for the first time since making her surprise return to the BBC soap just weeks ago. Viewers were left in shock when Zoe made her return to the soap after 20 years, although she scarpered once again after a close run in with her mother Kat. During her brief stint earlier this month, Zoe was seen away from the Square in Stacey Slater's (Lacey Turner 's) flat as Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) came to help. ‌ Zoe then fled to Barcelona after a close run in with her mother Kat, as she revealed she was hiding a big secret that everyone would "hate her" for if they found out. Currently, Alfie is in Barcelona to try and bring Zoe back. It's known Zoe will be returning to the Square later this year, with the first pictures of the star on set released. ‌ In the pictures, Michelle could be seen filming on set with Sonny Kendall, who plays Kat Slater's (Jessie Wallace) son, Tommy Moon. Zoe has never met her half-brother Tommy, but from the pictures, it looks like their first meeting could be happening very soon. As well as Tommy, Zoe also has half brothers Bert and Ernie, who she's also yet to meet. Fans can expect drama to go down when Zoe eventually does reunite with her mum Kat. The pair had a turbulent relationship, with which included revelations about Kat's past and the truth about Zoe's parentage. Despite a reconciliation, the pair's relationship became fractured again and they now remained estranged. However, Alfie hopes to bring the two back together by bringing Zoe back from Barcelona, although we could see dramatic scenes if his plan backfires. Keeping Zoe's return a secret from his wife, Alfie told Kat he was off to Australia, as his brother Spencer needed help. Kat is already becoming suspicious, as she was heard telling Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) that she hadn't spoken to Alfie since he left - and Spencer had been acting weird when she called. ‌ Prior to Alfie leaving, Kat was heard telling him that their relationship would be over for good if she found out he was lying about his whereabouts. Will Kat be able to forgive him? And how will her reunion with her daughter Zoe go down? Zoe's return marked the first episode for new Executive producer Ben Wadey, but it's not the only legendary return we'll be seeing. This week, it was announced that Karen Henthorn would be reprising her role as Julie Bates, as Nigel's dementia gets progressively worse. ‌ Speaking on Michelle Ryan's return to the soap, Wadey said: "Before I even stepped into the role, Zoe Slater was on my wish-list of returnees as although we haven't seen her on screen for twenty years, her character has transcended time due to her popular storylines. "I was absolutely delighted when Michelle agreed to return, and I'm thrilled to welcome her back to Walford. Whilst I can't say too much at this stage, Zoe's return is just one of the many exciting storylines we have planned.'

Zoe Slater star reunited with EastEnders legend after 20 years

EastEnders star Michelle Ryan has revealed she's back on set – and filming with an Albert Square legend after two decades. The actress, 41, made a shock return to our screens last week as Zoe Slater. Step-father Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) received a crisis call from Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), who explained Zoe was in a bad way. When he rushed to her flat, he discovered that she was becoming dependant on alcohol, vapes and takeaways to get through each day – evading some dangerous Spanish loan sharks. It soon transpired that she wasn't telling the truth about her financial woes, but before Alfie and Stace' could question her, estranged mum Kat (Jessie Wallace) arrived at the door. She rushed into the bedroom, trying to evade an awkward reunion. As long-term viewers will remember, the women were raised as sisters before an explosive argument revealed that Zoe had been born as a result of Kat being raped by her uncle in the 80s. When Kat finally left the flat, Zoe had vanished. She took Stacey's credit card with her, and booked a flight to Barcelona after claiming she'd done something 'so bad' that nobody would forgive her. Alfie has become determined to track her down and bring her back to Walford, and has told Kat a huge fib to explain his absence. She believes he's Down Under visiting brother Spencer (Christopher Parker), though she has her suspicions. While that was the last of the Zoe action for the time being, Michelle is already back recording new scenes that will air this Summer. To make things even more exciting, she's sharing the screen with the iconic Laila Morse, who plays her grandmother Big Mo Harris, for the first time in 20 years. Taking to Instagram, Michelle shared a picture of several documents writing: 'Time to prep scripts.' She added: 'This morning I saw Mo @lailamorse10 for the first time in twenty years! 'It was lovely, heart warming as Mo is one in a million. Looking forward to our scenes together.' Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? EastEnders confirms unexpected return as legend stages Albert Square comeback

Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) is set to make an unexpected return to Albert Square in next week's EastEnders as she arrives home with Hope and Arthur in tow. Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) and Mo Harris (Laila Morse) are both thrilled to have her back, and quickly catch her up on recent events. However, when Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) arrives, Stacey begins acting shifty, and it is clear that she is hiding something. Viewers will know that until recently, Stacey had been in contact with Kat's daughter, Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), and allowed her to stay at her flat. Zoe was adamant that she didn't want to see Kat as she had done something 'so bad' her mum would never be able to forgive her, though the secret of having been in contact with her is clearly weighing on Stacey. When Kat questions Stacey on her behaviour, she manages to cover by making out that she's missing daughter Lily (Lillia Turner). Later in the week, Kat is upset when Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) fails to return her calls, and things only get worse when Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) is caught stealing vapes with new friend Joel Marshall (Max Murray). She soon shares her upset with Stacey, who covers for Alfie, insisting she hasn't heard from him. Viewers will remember that Stacey previously called Alfie to help her deal with Zoe, and they are both hiding it from Kat. Unfortunately, Jean puts her foot in it by later revealing to Kat that Stacey received a phone call from Alfie that morning, and Kat is determined to find out what they're hiding. More Trending When Kat calls Spencer Moon to demand answers, she is horrified to learn that Alfie isn't in Australia after all… Realising that both Alfie and Stacey have lied to her, Kat heads to No.31 to confront Stacey about Alfie's whereabouts.
