
Texas Women's Foundation highlights $60 billion wage gap, urges action on equal pay
The foundation's new white paper, Texas Women and the Wage Gap: A Corporate Leader's Guide to Driving Workforce Sustainability, notes that the wage gap has increased since 2019 to $60.1 billion annually in lost earnings and lost economic productivity for the state.
Karen Hughes White, the President and CEO of the Texas Women's Foundation, said the data was released intentionally on March 25, often recognized as Equal Pay Day.
"The Equal Pay Act was passed in the 1970s, yet we are still discussing pay for equal work," she said. "The urgency around this now is that women comprise 46% of the Texas workforce and that's growing."

"Over a lifetime, the average Texas woman stands to lose $750,000 in lifetime earnings. That's game-changing for women," Hughes White said.
Hughes White said the designation for Equal Pay Day represents the amount of extra time women have to work in order to earn as much as men did in the previous year.
"The most shocking part of the data is how the age gap widens based on women's education. In Texas the more educated a woman is, the wider the wage gap is, [but] If we could just cut that wage gap the same as men with advanced degrees, it would actually cut the economic impact of the wage gap in half for equal work. We've been asking a long time."
Hughes White said for the average Texas woman, the ever-widening gap can impact her ability to achieve long-term economic security, stability and success for herself and her family.
According to Hughes White, that is not the only barrier for women to participate consistently and fully in the Texas economic landscape.
While the equal pay date is tied specifically to white women, Black and Hispanic women typically work much longer to achieve equal pay.
"The Texas economy which is [among] the largest and the strongest in the nation, is increasingly dependent on women to drive its success. The time is now for change and the time is now to act," she said.
Texas Women's Foundation offers statewide research on the issues impacting Texas women and girls and provides corporate, state and local decision-makers and lawmakers with critical data to inform policies, practices and programs across the state.
Hughes White said one way the foundation works to raise awareness around the wage gap across North Texas is by offering practical tools for women to pursue pay equity.
"When people know the issues, we can solve the issues, it's going to take all of us to do it," she said.
The foundation will offer
salary negotiation workshops
on April 17 and May 15.

"For more than 20 years, I have witnessed his unwavering dedication and selfless commitment to serving the community," she said. But for the last 41 days, Mario Guevara has been unable to pursue leads since his June 14 arrest while covering a protest against immigration enforcement tactics in DeKalb County. Why it matters: Guevara, a native of El Salvador who faces deportation from the country, is the only journalist in the U.S. currently detained after an arrest in connection with his work as a reporter, said Katherine Jacobsen, a program coordinator for Committee to Protect Journalists. "This case ... sends a clear, chilling message to reporters, especially those in this country who are not U.S. citizens, that they too could very well find themselves at risk in the same way Mario has," Jacobsen said during a press conference Tuesday. Federal immigration officials placed a hold on his detention at the DeKalb County Jail, meaning they would take him into custody once he was released from the facility. He was released from the DeKalb County Jail on June 18, but the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office charged him with misdemeanor traffic offenses stemming from an incident that happened about a month before his arrest. Both DeKalb and Gwinnett counties dropped charges against Guevara, but his attorney Giovanni Diaz said his client's phone was seized by the Gwinnett sheriff's office when they executed a search warrant. An immigration judge has ordered Guevara released on a $7,500 bond, but the federal government has appealed that ruling, meaning he remains at the immigration detention facility in Folkston.

Uber unveils ‘Women Preference' feature for drivers, riders
Women in select U.S. cities will soon be able to express a preference for female Uber drivers and riders in the popular ride-sharing service, the company announced Wednesday. Uber said pilot programs will roll out in the next few weeks in Los Angeles, Detroit and San Francisco. The company previously launched the system abroad, where women can request female drivers and riders in 40 countries. The program first launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019 and expanded after receiving an 'overwhelmingly positive' response, the company said. A spokesperson for Uber told The Hill that the company doesn't yet have a target launch date for other American cities but added, 'we're excited to learn from these pilots and bring these features to more cities soon.' The rollout comes as Uber has recorded thousands of incidents of sexual assaults throughout the years and has taken steps to mitigate the risk for women. 'Across the US, women riders and drivers have told us they want the option to be matched with other women on trips. We've heard them—and now we're introducing new ways to give them even more control over how they ride and drive,' Uber's press release Wednesday read. Uber is providing its female app users different ways to request rides with other women. After verifying their own gender on the app, female riders will see 'Women Drivers' as an on-demand option — along with UberX, UberXL, Black, Wait & Save and others — when they go to request a ride. Similarly, riders can reserve trips in advance with female drivers. Both riders and drivers can alternatively toggle the preference for women in their app settings. Lyft, a competitor to Uber, rolled out pilots for the 'Women+ Connect' option in September 2023, expanding it nationwide in February 2024.

Dismantling the Department of Education is a dangerous step backward
As a son of the South and a proud representative of New Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Lafourche, Assumption, and the River Parishes, I know what education means to a child's future. That's because seen what happens when it's denied. Now, I am watching in real time as our nation walks backward. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court handed President Trump another victory in his mission to shrink and now dismantle the Department of Education. With this decision, nearly 1,400 public servants will be laid off. Vital programs will be gutted. Oversight of special education, civil rights enforcement in schools, after-school programming and college financial aid will be slashed or eliminated — all under the banner of 'returning control to the states.' Let me say this plainly: We've been here before. And we know what happens when the federal government turns its back on education and civil rights. During Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau — a federal agency — built schools across the South to educate newly freed Black Americans. That wasn't a gesture of kindness. It was an act of justice. But when Reconstruction ended and federal protections were withdrawn, those schools closed, the progress collapsed, and systemic inequality returned with a bloody vengeance. That's not just history — it's a warning. We saw it again under Jim Crow, when separate-but-equal meant separate-and-unequal. And we saw it when four young Black girls had to be escorted by federal marshals just to walk into a schoolhouse. That wasn't a state triumph — it was a federal intervention. It was Washington, not the state capitol, that protected their right to learn. So, when this administration says it wants to 'return power to the states,' we must ask: Power to do what? Because too often, that phrase has been used as a shield for discrimination, neglect and inequality. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in her dissent, warned: 'When the executive publicly announces its intent to break the law, and then executes on that promise, it is the judiciary's duty to check that lawlessness — not expedite it.' She is correct. And her words echo my own belief that when faced with injustice, it takes action from all of what I call the three C's: Congress, the courts and the community. Congress must act — to protect education funding, to block reckless dismantling of federal agencies, and to ensure that every child, in every zip code, has equal access to a quality education. The courts must remain vigilant — to uphold the Constitution and reject political power grabs that undermine our democracy and our rights. And the community — you and I — must stay engaged, informed and vocal. We must attend school board meetings, call our elected officials, support teachers and students, and hold decision-makers accountable. I have spent my life in public service — first on the New Orleans City Council, then in the Louisiana Legislature, and now in Congress — because I believe government can be a force for good. But only if we fight to keep it that way. This decision is not about trimming fat. It is about cutting off lifelines — to students with disabilities, families relying on after-school care and communities still facing educational inequity. The world is watching. Our children are watching. And history is watching too. Let us rise to meet this moment — not retreat from it. Our children are not expendable. Our future is not negotiable. And our commitment to justice must never be optional.
