'I had to defend myself', man accused of police officer assault at airport says
Muhammad Amaad, 26, and Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, are alleged to have used a 'high level of violence' against PC Zachary Marsden, PC Lydia Ward and PC Ellie Cook after they tried to arrest the younger brother.
The Greater Manchester Police officers entered the Terminal 2 car park paystation after reports that a male fitting Amaaz's description had headbutted a member of the public inside the airport just minutes before on 23 July 2024.
Giving evidence on Monday at Liverpool Crown Court, Amaad said: 'They come in and grab Fahir straight away. They started pushing him forward into the ticket machine.
'I didn't understand the need for the aggression.'
He told his barrister Chloe Gardner that nothing was said by any of the officers and that he tried to 'de-escalate the situation' by saying 'easy, easy … no, no, no'.
Ms Gardner said: 'Were you trying to be provocative or make things worse?'
Amaad said: 'No, I was trying to help, if anything.'
Ms Gardner said: 'As far as you could see, did you see any reason why they grabbed hold of him?'
'No,' said Amaad.
He said he then saw a male officer, PC Marsden, grab his younger brother's neck.
Amaad said: 'I didn't know where his other hand was. I thought both his hands might be around his neck and he was choking him.
'So, I stepped around and I just placed my hand under the officer's arm.'
He denied he pushed PC Marsden or tried to grab the officer's throat.
Amaad said: 'Next, all I can remember is I got a bang in the face. My eyes sort of shut and I put my hands up and thought 'what was that?'
'Then I just remember 'bang, bang, bang'. It caught me by surprise, I was stunned.
'We just sort of fell over on to a chair and I am feeling punches, holding and grabbing, and I had to defend myself during that time.'
PC Marsden went on to fire his Taser at him, the court heard, and he later sat down with his hands on his head after he saw the officer's firearm.
Amaad told the court: 'I just felt to myself 'I'm not dying today'. I have been punched, I have been tasered, I am not going to die today.'
Ms Gardner said: 'Why did you strike PC Marsden at the seated area?'
Amaad said: 'Because it was at that point I was trying to make him stop and defend myself. I was put in a situation where I had to defend myself'.
Earlier, a total of 20 character references for Amaaz were read out by his barrister Imran Khan KC including many citing the defendant's charity work in the local community.
Among the testimonials were one from his elder brother, Mohammed Abid, 28, a serving officer with Greater Manchester Police since 2020.
He said his youngest brother, 'the baby of the family', looked up to him as a role model and that Fahir had never previously had any interactions with the police or the criminal justice system.
He said: 'He lives a clean, honest lifestyle. His dedication to his academic goals and personal development is something I deeply admire.
'Our family has strong moral values instilled in us by our parents at an early age.
'Mohammed Fahir Amaaz is a kind, respectful, upstanding young man with a bright future ahead.'
Amaaz is alleged to have assaulted PC Marsden and PC Ward, causing them actual bodily harm.
He is also accused of the assault of emergency worker PC Cook, and the earlier assault of a member of the public, Abdulkareem Ismaeil, at a Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals.
Amaad, a former assistant manager at KFC, is alleged to have assaulted PC Marsden, causing actual bodily harm.
Both men, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, deny the allegations.

A grim 'revenge attack' was carried out by a man in Merseyside in which he shot a crossbow five times at a grandmother's property while her grandchildren were inside A man issued a chilling threat to a grandma before carrying out a "revenge attack" with a crossbow, which saw him fire on her house while her grandchildren were inside. The 'very dangerous' weapon was used by Neil Spencer, who shot five times at the property. Some of the bolts were shot directly at the grandmother and one of her daughters. Spencer carried out his act in retaliation for his own children having apparently been bullied. One of the victims says she "still repeats in her head what could have happened if the bolt hit her". Spencer, meanwhile, is said to have been left "disappointed and ashamed" over his "misguided and stupid enterprise". Spencer admitted making threats with an offensive weapon, which was never recovered by police, and two counts of criminal damage. Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool wearing a grey Montirex t-shirt, he was jailed for 18 months and handed an indefinite restraining order. Liverpool Crown Court heard that Spencer had attended the home of Laura Connor, where she lived with her two daughters and son, on Madryn Avenue in Kirkby, Merseyside, around two weeks earlier on May 20 this year. On this occasion, the 43-year-old, of Eastfield Walk, was said to have threatened in relation to the son: "Tell him if he comes round to my ex bird's house, I'll come round with my mates." Nardeen Nemat, prosecuting, described how all four occupants were then present at the same address at the time of the subsequent "revenge attack" along with Ms Connor's grandchildren, who were aged as young as four. Spencer returned to the property at around 8.30am on June 1 wearing a balaclava and armed with a crossbow shouting: "Grass, where are they?" This led to Ms Connor replying "what the f*** are you doing?" from an upstairs bedroom. The "irate" defendant then aimed the weapon in her direction and fired it as she closed the window, with the bolt becoming lodged within the pane of glass. Spencer followed this up with a second shot when Ms Connor reopened the window before one of her daughters, Tahlia Gill, appeared at another window and shouted "get away from my house", Liverpool Echo reports. The armed man then turned his attention to her, responding "where are they?" before firing another bow in her direction. Another shot was then fired at the front door. When a fifth missed and landed in the front garden, Spencer jumped onto Ms Gill's car and smashed the windows. Around £600 worth of damage was caused to a Ford Fiesta. In a statement which was read out to the court on her behalf, she said: "It was the most serious and dangerous thing to ever happen to me and my family. It left me extremely frightened and paranoid. "I didn't deserve this. The fact that my family and I were in the house when this happened, including children, still fills me with anxiety. I still find it hard to believe I had a weapon fired at me. I still repeat in my head what could have happened if the bolt hit me. "I also think how helpless we would have been if he had come in the house and attacked us. Me and my family are seriously affected by this. The impact of your offending was very clearly recorded in the victim personal statement of Tahlia Gill. Having seen the footage, it is wholly unsurprising that she and other members of the household were terrified. Tom Challinor, defending, told the court: "Mr Spencer is a man with a bad criminal record. Between the ages of 13 and 22, he was before the courts regularly. To his credit, he has put regular offending behind him. "If one was to put aside two offences of cannabis possession, in relation to which he was fined in 2019 and 2021, there is a gap of 20 years from his last offence before the court in 2004 and an offence of battery against his ex-partner in 2024. While it is difficult to submit that he had turned over a new leaf, he had, to a large extent, put that offending behind him. "It is for that reason that he is really disappointed and ashamed that he is back before the courts again. This is no excuse, but it is the reason why he finds himself here. Devon Simmonds: Tributes paid to 15-year-old boy killed in crash
Tributes have been paid to a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a crash involving an electric bike and a Simmonds was declared dead at the scene on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton shortly before 12:00 BST on Tuesday.A 59-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder, Greater Manchester Police said.A row of flowers have been left near the crash scene while other tributes including colourful balloons and candles have been placed at Lakeland Court shopping precinct. Mourners have also left messages of condolences on balloons and cards. One person wrote: "Rest in paradise Devon" while another message read: "RIP Dev. Always making everyone smile. You will be forever missed."Another said: "Forever 15 Dev. The biggest soul. Shine bright as always." The force said investigations were ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the crash after officers were called to reports of a collision on Rowrah are also looking into an alleged theft, over which another 15-year-old boy has been arrested, before the crash. Det Ch Insp Christopher Dean said: "This terrible incident has seen the death of a teenage boy."We are working hard to establish the full facts of this case, in what is the very early stages of an investigation."The force said the teenager's family was being supported by officers. Teen boy killed in E-bike horror crash as tributes pour in
The teenager died in an E-bike crash on Monday, July 22. A 15-year-old boy who died in a horror crash involving an e-bike has been named as Devon Simmonds. The teenager tragically lost his life following the incident on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton, just before midday on Monday, July 22. Emergency services raced to the scene but, despite their best efforts, Devon was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His devastated family are being supported by specially trained officers, say Greater Manchester Police. A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Officers have also arrested another 15-year-old boy on suspicion of theft as part of their ongoing investigation, reports Manchester Evening News. The close-knit community has been left shaken by the tragedy. One neighbour who knew the boy and his family well, told the Manchester Evening News: "This involves the family of my friend. Another local, who said they knew of Devon, said: "He was a top, top lad. Lived on this estate all his life and a lot of people knew him. "He was very respectable, obviously it's a horrible thing to happen to him and his family." Greater Manchester Police say they are still working to piece together the full circumstances and are probing allegations of theft in the lead-up to the collision. Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Dean, from GMP's Rochdale district, said: 'This terrible incident has seen the death of a teenage boy, and we are working hard to establish the full facts of this case, in what is the very early stages of an investigation. "A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned in due course, while officers are already in place to support the family of the boy who has died today. "I want to remind people that at the heart of this is a grieving family, and I would ask the community to not speculate on social media while we piece together the events of earlier today. 'As our work progresses, I would ask anyone with information to please come forward – whether you witnessed anything or have any dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area.'
