Some tornado siren batteries drained due to extended severe weather event, OEM says
The Nashville Office of Emergency Management's (OEM) Outdoor Tornado Warning Siren System saw some sirens' batteries drain, rendering them inoperable temporarily, according to OEM Public Information Officer Joseph Pleasant.
In a news release, Pleasant said multiple siren sites activated as the National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings for the Nashville areas. However, the continued tornado warnings and sounding of the sirens drained the batteries in the sirens themselves.
Continued severe weather expected through Thursday
Once the batteries died, the sirens stopped sounding, according to Pleasant. In areas where there were power outages, the sirens did not start to recharge until electricity was restored.
One siren, Siren #51 Parmer Park on Leake Avenue, had a communications failure, Pleasant said. A repair team will need to visit the site in order to repair the siren. There is not currently an estimate for when that repair will happen, according to OEM.
Importantly, the OEM reminded residents the outdoor tornado warning siren system is only one method of receiving alerts to dangerous weather conditions.
Additionally, the OEM urged residents to remember the sirens are designed to be heard outdoors and are not intended to be audible inside homes or buildings.

Tracking record temps and rain to start the work week
Overnight Saturday, we didn't get much relief from the heat. We set a new record for the highest low temperature, with a low of 80°F, surpassing the previous record of 78°F set in 2013. Tonight, we could break another record. The record for the highest overnight low was 77°F, set in 2016. Our forecasted low tonight is 78°F, so we may experience another record-breaking warm night. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for most of Missouri and Kansas, in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. As we start the workweek, no relief from the heat is expected just yet. Temperatures will quickly climb into the upper 90s, with heat indices in the 100s, making for another hot day. After lunch on Monday, a low-pressure system in Kansas will approach from the west, triggering a cold front and bringing a chance for thunderstorms Monday night into early Tuesday morning. These storms are expected to be scattered, with the greatest impact to the north and west of our area. For Monday night into Tuesday, we are in a Level 1 risk (out of 5), while counties to the north, such as Holt and Nodaway, are under a Level 2 risk. The primary threats from this system will be damaging winds and small hail. While the risk is low for most of our viewing area, it's important to stay updated with the latest forecast and have the Storm Tracker app downloaded. Temperatures will gradually cool throughout the week, and by Friday, we expect highs in the upper 80s, a welcome break from the upper 90s. Rain chances will continue through the week, with Thursday expected to bring the next significant weather system.

‘Heat dome' to bring hottest temperatures of the year to Middle Tennessee
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The News 2 Weather Authority team is forecasting the hottest temperatures of the year to arrive for the start of summer. A 'heat dome' will bring extreme temperatures to the eastern half of the United States. The forecast for the first weekend of summer is for temperatures in the mid-90s and feels like temperatures over 100° from Saturday, June 21, through Wednesday, June 25. These high temperatures are caused by a heat dome. The term 'heat dome' is relatively new, but it does a great job of describing what's going to happen. FORECAST: Middle Tennessee & Southern Kentucky Weather A heat dome describes the impacts that a large, slow-moving area of high pressure has on the atmosphere. High pressure typically leads to sunny and dry weather. This is because high pressure causes sinking air, and the sinking causes the air to dry out and heat up. The sinking air also acts as a dome because it prevents the hottest air near the surface from escaping. This is why during prolonged heat domes, we can start to see air quality issues. It won't be a dry heat either. Thanks to all the rain we have seen this year, the humidity will remain very high. This will make it feel like over 105°! These extreme feels-like temperatures will prompt the National Weather Service to issue its first heat advisories of the year. It's unlikely, but if it gets even hotter, they will have to issue extreme heat warnings. With this extreme heat on the way, it is important to take safety precautions. Take frequent breaks, drink a lot of water, and know the difference if you are experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Heavy rain, isolated severe storms expected in Middle TN Friday
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A wet weekend is expected at times across Middle Tennessee, and there is a risk for a few strong to severe storms on Friday. Expect the highest rain chances the next few days to occur in the afternoon and evening hours. The Storm Prediction Center's 8 a.m. Friday added a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for all counties of Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. This risk means a few severe storms are possible. FORECAST: Middle Tennessee & Southern Kentucky Weather As mentioned, heavy rain & lightning will be the primary storm threat. However, there will be a window for a few stronger storms that could produce gusty winds nearing severe criteria (58+ mph is the trigger for a severe storm warning). The hail and tornado risk is extremely low. RADAR | Track weather across TN live Looking ahead through Friday evening, rain and storm coverage will increase as daytime heating increases. Some severe thunderstorms are possible, but overall storms will stay below severe criteria and mostly produce heavy rainfall. This weekend: more rain! There will be some dry times, but most of the rain and storms in our area will fall during the afternoon and evening hours.
