Wi-Fi to remain ‘indisputable' foundation of India's digital future, says Aruna Sundararajan
digital future
despite the disruption brought by the fifth-generation (5G) networks, according to the
Broadband India Forum
(BIF).
'Wi-Fi networks are crucial because they constitute the silent yet incredibly powerful workhouse of the digital ecosystem. Nearly 80% of all data today is consumed indoors, while higher frequencies involved in 5G networks can offer high speeds, they often struggle to penetrate materials,'
Aruna Sundararajan
, chairperson of BIF, and former secretary,
Department of Telecommunications
(DoT), said at the World Wi-Fi Day event organised by BIF Tuesday.
'No matter what the user profile is, we know that without Wi-Fi, it is not possible to grow the digital ecosystem,' she added.
Sundararajan said there are tremendous opportunities in
public Wi-Fi hotspots
, noting that the
Bharat 6G Vision
document envisages the deployment of 50 million Wi-Fi hotspots by 2030.
The Central government, in December 2020, had launched its ambitious
PM-WANI initiative
to boost the penetration of public Wi-Fi hotspots in the country, and drive affordable access to the internet in rural and urban regions. However, the progress of deployment of PM-WANI-compliant hotspots has been mired by challenges, including high backhaul costs and a lack of monetisation opportunities.
There are currently 333,294 PM-WANI hotspots available in India, according to the latest data from the central registry.
She said that recent government decisions to proliferate Wi-Fi hotspots, including capping of broadband connectivity costs of public Wi-Fi service providers at double the rates of home broadband services, will advance innovation-led affordable and inclusive connectivity nationwide.

'These key policy interventions together represent a major inflection point in India's Wi-Fi journey, and they signal that the government of India is ambitious of providing inclusive and affordable broadband access to every Indian,' the former telecom secretary said, urging the ecosystem to work with the government in realising its ambitious Wi-Fi penetration targets.
She said the delicensing of the lower 6GHz band will enable the launch of a host of new Wi-Fi technologies, including Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.
'Wi-Fi 7 in particular holds great promise to become a core provider of
affordable Internet access
across our nation…we believe that this step of the ministry would enable businesses, educational institutions and users in residential and office spaces to access high-speed wireless internet and ultra-reliable networks, which remain the indisputable foundation of a country's digital future,' Sundararajan said.

India ramps up fertiliser production output, diversifies away from China
Mumbai: After China halted critical fertiliser supplies, the Indian manufacturers are increasing domestic output through advanced technologies and new formulations, according to a report on Monday. India's fertiliser industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2 per cent, reaching $16.58 billion by 2032. In FY25, total fertiliser production increased to 51 MT, supported by flagship schemes such as PM-KISAN and PM-Garib Kalyan Yojana, CareEdge Ratings said in its report. After restrictions on rare earth elements, China halted its speciality fertilisers and key phosphate exports to India. In response to this, India has secured a five-year agreement with Saudi Arabia to import 3.1 million tonnes of Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) annually, which is equivalent to approximately 30 per cent of its domestic requirement. 'This crisis presents a unique opportunity. With China pausing fertiliser supplies, Indian manufacturers are stepping up to bridge the gap by increasing domestic output, which will not only benefit them but also drive innovation, particularly through the adoption of advanced technologies and the development of new formulations," said Priti Agarwal, Senior Director at CareEdge Ratings. "Policymakers, manufacturers, and farmers are collaborating to combat the issue with a combination of alternative sourcing, local production, and on-the-ground innovation,' she added. China accounted for nearly 70 per cent of India's speciality fertiliser imports during the June to December period in recent years. Now, India is signalling a decisive shift towards supply diversification and enhanced resilience by exploring alternatives like Saudi Arabia, Israel, Jordan, Russia, Oman, Morocco. Chinese di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) supply to India began to decline in 2023, then dropped from 2.29 MT in FY24 to 0.84 MT in FY25, and there have been no shipments since early 2025. Inspection clearances for DAP and speciality fertiliser shipments to India have been withheld since April 2025, blocking supplies while exports to other nations continue. "Ensuring adequate inventory and timely distribution — through coordinated efforts between the government and private stakeholders should be the near-term focus. The recent agreement with Saudi Arabia for long-term DAP supply is a timely step in this direction,' said Sachin Mathur, Associate Director at CareEdge Ratings.

Tips And Tricks: Weak Wi-Fi At Home? 7 Ways To Boost Internet Speed And Coverage
These days, the internet has become a basic necessity in almost every household. Whether it's for online classes, working from home, or streaming entertainment, everything depends on a strong Wi-Fi connection. However, many people often face the issue of weak Wi-Fi signals at home, and in most cases, unknowingly contribute to the problem themselves. If your Wi-Fi doesn't work properly, you can improve both speed and coverage with a few simple changes. Here are some easy tips to get the most out of your home network: (News18 Hindi) Choose The Right Spot For The Router: People often place their router in a corner, on the floor, or behind furniture, all of which can weaken the signal. Instead, position it at a central location in the house and at a height. Avoid placing it near walls, metal objects, microwaves, or cordless phones, as these can interfere with the signal. (News18 Hindi) 3/8 Reduce Signal Interference: Devices such as Bluetooth speakers and other wireless gadgets can disrupt your Wi-Fi. Keep the router away from such devices. Also, if multiple Wi-Fi networks operate nearby, switch your router to a less crowded channel to minimise interference. (News18 Hindi) Upgrade Your Router: If your router is more than 3 - 4 years old, consider upgrading it. Opt for a dual-band or tri-band router that supports Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. The 5 GHz band offers faster speeds at short range, while the 2.4 GHz band provides better coverage over longer distances. (News18 Hindi) Keep the Software Updated: Make sure to regularly update your router's firmware. This not only improves performance but also enhances security. (News18 Hindi) Use a Wi-Fi Extender or Mesh System: In large homes, some rooms may not receive signals properly. Installing a Wi-Fi range extender or a mesh Wi-Fi system ensures seamless coverage in every corner of the house. (News18 Hindi) Secure Your Network: Protect your network with a strong password and WPA2/WPA3 encryption. This will stop others from using your internet without permission, helping to maintain your speed. (News18 Hindi)

Which sector could emerge as a winner this earning season? Amnish Aggarwal answers
Amnish Aggarwal , Head, Research, Prabhudas Lilladher , says the Q1 earning season has been largely disappointing, with only a few banks performing well. Demand trends and stress on MSMEs and unsecured loans are evident, impacting financial performance. Consumer companies are unlikely to beat estimates, leading to potential earnings cuts. While select capital goods and commodity companies show promise, financials are underperforming, keeping markets in a narrow range. It's a very range-bound market; on the upper end we have been at that 25,200 mark and the lower end is where we shut shop on Friday. Pretty uncertain times. Let's talk about the softness in earnings which is playing out. Other than ICICI Bank, I really do not see any big numbers in largecaps so far and of course, a few midcaps here and there. What do you think is going to emerge as the winner this earning season? Amnish Aggarwal: So far, the earning season has been very lacklustre. Barring a couple of banks which have done well, the majority of the companies have disappointed in Q1. If you look at the commentary of some of the companies like Kotak or Bajaj Finance – some of these financiers are the parameter of the economy – show that the demand trends and the stress on MSME or unsecured loans is very clearly visible. But if you look broadly, I am not very confident that many of them will beat the estimates and for a large part of those companies, we will see some cut in earnings as we go along. Similarly, in these two baskets, except for some good numbers from select capital good stocks or commodity companies which have been showing better margins like cement, steel, etc, – the earning season so far has been very tepid and demand has failed to take off. The biggest weight in all the indices is financials. There also things are not looking great and that is the reason why it is keeping markets in a very narrow zone. What do you make of the pharma pack for now because the earnings were not that bad? Look at Dr Reddy's numbers. Even Cipla managed to surprise as did Laurus Lab where the experts have raised the target price, though the management has reiterated their FY26 outlook. What is your view on the pharma pack right now? Amnish Aggarwal: Traditionally FMCG, IT, and pharma have been considered defensives and as of now, only the pharma segment is doing better. There is reasonably good demand in the domestic and also on the overseas side. Some part of it might also be due to the fact that there might be some stocking ahead of the tariff announcement because there is a lot of tariff uncertainty. But having said that, as of now, within the defensive pack, pharma is standing out and in certain cases, the valuations might not be cheap but a select pharma stock could do well if it has number visibility. Live Events You Might Also Like: Jigar Mistry on 3 sectors that offer better earnings upside in Q1 Where is demand headed right now in terms of staples and where could strength return to the sector? Amnish Aggarwal: As of now, it is quite uncertain and in Q1 also we had a favourable base and because of elections, a lot of uncertainty. Ut at the same time this year, monsoons came early, we had unseasonal rains happening throughout May in the entire Hindi heartland. That also spooked the growth to some extent not only in the consumer staples but also in some parts of durables. So, the conditions could not have been better because the monsoon is normal, the interest rates have been cut and there has been some reduction in taxes. Inflation is running at around 2-2.5% with food inflation on the negative side, one could not hope for better conditions for the recovery. But having said that, it is not visible to that extent and slowly, as we go along, we will see commentaries suggesting more recovery happening during 2Q or during the festival season. So, some stress is visible on the unsecured side and on the MSME side. The premium segment, the segment which the well-to-do or the affluent sections are using, continue to do well. But the other segments remain under pressure and may say another quarter or more for the things to stabilise. But yes, on the macro side the conditions are right for the sector to start reporting better volume numbers. You Might Also Like: Are current market valuations hiding opportunities or risks?
