
Publicity designers call for State Award category, seek recognition for creative role in filmmaking
FEFKA Publicity Designers' Union general secretary Jissen Paul said that despite their work contributing to the promotion of a film in a major way, they are often not given due credit for the film's success. 'Since we work on the creative side, we are often under pressure. We also have to update ourselves with the latest technology, to adapt to the changing tastes of the audience,' he told TNIE.
More than an award, what the community seeks is a formal recognition of their skills, added union president Abdul Rahman.
A young talent in the industry, Anand Rajendran of Illuminartist Creatives, highlighted that designers are those who work till the end of the theatrical run of a movie, and even for a certain period after its OTT release. 'Even private players in the industry recognise our work. Hence, we request the government to allot an award category for us in the state awards,' he said.
Responding to the requests, Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian said the concerns of publicity designers have been noted. 'We have been following the same pattern [in award distribution] for several years and there are several changes that need to be made,' the minister told TNIE.

Kerala's Culture Affairs Minister Saji Cherian has announced that the state will frame a comprehensive film policy within the next three months. Speaking at the Kerala Film Policy Conclave, Cherian said the policy will focus on creating a safer, more equitable environment for film and television professionals, especially from the Hema Committee report, which was commissioned after allegations of exploitation in the Malayalam film industry, the policy aims to tackle systemic issues. 'When people enter the industry with passion for cinema, that passion is being exploited,' Cherian said, referring to incidents that triggered widespread outrage and led to the formation of the the key suggestions that emerged at the conclave were provision of maternity leave for women technicians, nurseries on film sets for children, fixed working hours, and basic facilities like toilets and changing rooms for junior artists. The minister said all such proposals would be discussed and implemented in the final policy. The issue of online trolling and cyberbullying also came up for serious discussion. 'We will give serious legal consideration to how we can deal with cyber harassment,' Cherian said, adding that concerns regarding the censor board's operations will be taken up with the point of contention raised during the conclave was the practice of film reviewers publishing reviews on the day of a movie's release. While acknowledging the importance of freedom of expression, the minister said early reviews often impact a film's commercial prospects. 'A lot of money is invested in one film and thousands depend on it. We are thinking about bringing changes that can address all concerns,' he on shooting in forest areas and the need to engage with the Forest Department were also flagged, with Cherian stating that he has already spoken to the Forest Minister and would bring the matter to the Chief Minister's new policy will not be limited to the film industry alone. Film policy will ensure gender equality, says minister
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A film policy that ensures gender equality, addresses issues of junior artists and promotes independent cinema was what the state government promised as the two-day Kerala Film Policy Conclave organised by the culture department came to a close in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Culture Minister Saji Cherian said the state policy will ensure complete safety and gender equality for men and women working at shooting locations, and addresss the issues of junior artists' regarding wages, working hours and basic facilities. 'Since cinema is a form of employment, labour laws are applicable to everyone in the industry. The government will ensure job security for all in the film field. It will roll out e-ticketing in theatres this year, and has allocated Rs 5 crore for implementation,' Cherian said while presenting his report. He said the policy will not just address cinema, but also include television. 'A reworked version of the POSH Act for the film industry was released as a booklet during the conclave. We have taken two or three meaningful steps to secure a better future for Malayalam cinema. There is still a long way to go,' he said. The film policy will ensure independent films are screened at least once in government theatres. The state will explore ways to offer subsidies to such films. Permissions for film shoots will be streamlined via a single-window clearance system.
