
Car insurance: Which? warns over hefty renewal price rises
Most of us would chalk that down as a serious win – but what if you hadn't called?
The consumer organisation Which? is concerned that customers might be being 'taken for a ride' on renewals. It wants the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK regulator, to investigate whether insurers are falling short of requirements to offer 'fair value' to their customers.
Which? surveyed more than 2,000 adults with car insurance and found that 'a large number' had benefited from reductions to their renewal price, with some getting £200 or more lopped off the original quote.
Six in 10 said they had got into a discussion with their insurer about the quote they had been offered, with most of them doing so over the phone. In 61% of cases this led to them being offered a lower price.
The average saving was £64 a year, although some received much more sizeable reductions. One in 20 said they had saved more than £200.
Which? says that if significantly better prices are offered to customers, but only after they make a fuss, insurers may be in breach of the FCA's consumer duty rules, which came into force in July 2023 and require financial firms to demonstrate their products provide fair value for customers.
Mystifyingly large price rises at renewal are certainly not unusual. Guardian Money has featured several cases during the past few months, including the home insurance policyholder who was quoted £4,730 for renewing a policy that had previously cost £440, and another home insurance customer whose quote leapt from £518 to £1,353.
With 40% of survey respondents not talking to their insurer about the quoted price before renewing, this suggests many customers 'may be unfairly paying over the odds', Which? says.
It has outlined tips for negotiating with your insurer over the price.
If the renewal price has gone up, ask the company to justify the increase.
Point out any lower prices you have found elsewhere, and ask your insurer if it can better those offers.
If it is not able to provide a better quote, say that you are willing to go elsewhere. If you have been a loyal customer for many years, mention that.
If your insurer isn't budging much, one option is to ask for an add-on (such as breakdown cover) to be thrown in to provide better value.
The Association of British Insurers says that variations between an initial quote and a bespoke over-the-phone offer 'often come down to a deeper dive into individual factors which may have changed from the previous policy – such as your vehicle's security measures, driving habits, level of cover and choice of voluntary excess'.
It adds: 'Our members take their commitment to their customers and their regulatory requirements seriously.'

easyJet exposed 'paying £1 bonus to airport staff who catch out passengers with oversized baggage'
Airport staff are cashing in on bonuses for catching easyJet passengers with oversized bags, a leaked email has revealed. The email, sent to employees of Swissport, which runs passenger gates in several airports in Britain, confirmed that staff would receive £1.20 (£1 after tax) for every 'gate bag' deemed too large to take onboard without paying extra. This controversial 'easyJet gate bag revenue incentive' is still active, rewarding gate agents for enforcing baggage rules at airports including Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey, Liverpool, and Newcastle. The scheme aims to 'reward agents doing the right thing' with direct payments to employees, according to the internal message signed by Dean Martin, a Swissport station manager at Glasgow Airport, seen by the Sunday Times. Similar bonus arrangements also exist at other airports, with DHL Supply Chain staff at Gatwick, Bristol, and Manchester receiving a 'nominal amount' per oversized bag spotted. Passengers are allowed one small bag free with easyJet, but larger bags must be paid for, with fees starting at £5.99 and soaring to nearly £33 on some routes. At the gate, if caught with an unpaid oversized bag, travellers face a £48 charge, of which £1.20 goes directly into the pockets of airport staff. Many passengers have complained about aggressive enforcement and inconsistent sizing, sometimes being forced to pay despite bags fitting official size frames. Ground staff are employed by third-party handling companies, which vary between airports. These companies manage staff pay and incentive schemes independently, and easyJet is not involved in or responsible for how bonuses are issued. A Swissport spokesperson emphasised that the company follows airline policies under agreed terms, focusing on professionalism and delivering safe, efficient operations across millions of flights each year. An easyJet spokeswoman said: 'easyJet is focused on ensuring our ground handling partners apply our policies correctly and consistently in fairness to all our customers. 'Our bag policies and options are well understood and we remind customers of this when booking, before they travel and on their boarding pass which means a very small proportion of customers who don't comply will be charged at the airport.' Swissport was approached for comment. It comes as Ryanair has announced plans to boost the size of its free 'personal bag' allowance. The budget airline currently lets passengers bring a small bag measuring 40x20x25cm for free, but that's about to change. Ryanair will soon let holidaymakers carry bags up to 40x30x20cm, a 20% increase, following new EU rules that set a minimum free baggage size of 40x30x15cm. The bigger allowance kicks in within weeks once Ryanair updates its bag sizers. Wetherspoons brings BACK iconic menu item months after it vanished from pubs across the UK
WETHERSPOONS is bringing back a legendary item at all 809 pubs months after it was axed. The bargain boozer has revealed that its chicken bites are going to be back on menus. 1 The £6.49 treats had been listed as "temporarily unavailable" since April. The 10 chicken bites also come complete with a portion of chips and a handful of condiments. A JD Wetherspoon spokesperson said: "Chicken bites are now available in all Wetherspoon pubs." The pub chain did not add why the popular item had been scratched in the first place. Revellers had for months questioned the whereabouts of the staple since it vanished. "It has been over one month without the chicken bites on the menu and I physically can't do this," one fan wrote on the Reddit group r/Wetherspoons. "Where have they gone?" Another wrote: "My beautiful, mouthwatering, crisped bites, that even the heavens have blessed with an angel's touch, where have you gone. "I suffer with agony and mourn every second without you in my spoons pub. "For real though, whats actually happened to them?? They're still on my local pub menus but they're never in stock." People's savings are not working hard enough, so we will overhaul the pensions system
Tomorrow our new Pension Schemes Bill will have its second reading in the House of Commons. It will overhaul the pension system to ensure your savings work as hard as you worked to build them in the first place. Fundamentally it will prioritise higher rates of return for pension savers, putting more money into people's pockets in a host of different ways. For the first time we will require pension schemes to prove they are value for money, focusing their mindset on returns over costs and protecting savers from getting stuck in underperforming schemes for years on end. This plays a significant part of this Government's plan to grow the economy and put people in a better position during retirement as part of our Plan for Change. We are also at last addressing the small pension pots issue. Recently I was out door-knocking in Swansea. A women in her mid-30s told me something was really winding her up – the headache of trying to keep track of the small amounts of pensions savings she had from old jobs. There are now 13 million small pension pots floating around the UK pension system, each holding £1,000 or less. That number is increasing by around one million a year. That isn't just a hassle, it costs when savers can end up paying multiple flat fees on several pots. And it's costing the pension industry around £225 million each year administering them all. Our answer is to automatically bring an individual's small pots together into one pension scheme that's been certified as delivering good value for savers. And, of course, anyone that wants to can opt out. This change on its own could boost the pension pot of an average earner by around £1,000. Size doesn't always matter, but it does for pensions because bigger funds have lower costs and can invest in a wider range of assets. Both can drive up returns for savers. So we will also accelerate the consolidation of pension schemes into 'megafunds', with assets of at least £25 billion. Bigger funds will be better placed to invest in productive assets like infrastructure and housing, so this approach will also unlock more investment into the UK. Making your savings simple I appreciate younger readers in particular may not have thought in great detail about their pension plan. In fact, over three quarters of pre-retirement defined-contribution pension savers don't have a clear plan to access their retirement savings. And when it comes to retirement, too many of those reaching that point immediately draw down all their savings in one go. So, through our Bill, we will simplify things, requiring pension schemes to provide default retirement options – clear, secure routes for people to use their pension pot throughout retirement. People will still have the freedom to choose of course, but we want to support more people through complex choices that too often feel overwhelming, and where mistakes can cost thousands of pounds. Pensions sound techy, but this is about the basic job of government: helping to raise everyone's living standards. And at the end of the day, it's our pensions we live on in retirement. Even if that is a long way off for you, in fact especially if it is, these reforms will make a massive difference. After all, it's my job as the pensions minister to make sure that your pension savings work as hard for you as you did to earn them.
