Expansion of China and regional deals to be signed in October
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean has concluded the upgrade of two existing trade agreements, expected to be signed at the 47th Asean Summit in October, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said such was the result of upgraded negotiations on the Asean-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) 3.0 and the Asean Trade in Goods Agreement (Atiga).
'I am pleased to report that two of our priority economic deliverables for 2025 have been concluded. Both agreements are scheduled to be signed in October.
'We remain confident that these milestones will serve as pivotal enablers for Asean's sustained growth and competitiveness,' he said after chairing the 25th Asean Economic Community Council (AECC) meeting yesterday.
Tengku Zafrul said the successful conclusion of these negotiations are expected to enhance the region's economic integration and generate significant economic benefits for Asean as it navigates an increasingly volatile global economic landscape.
He said Atiga, long regarded as the cornerstone of Asean's economic integration, will feature forward-looking and commercially meaningful provisions aimed at further boosting regional trade, enhancing supply chain resilience and promoting deeper economic integration.
Tengku Zafrul also said the AECC meeting concluded negotiations on the enhanced memorandum of agreement on the Asean Power Grid (APG) initiative and it is scheduled to be signed at the 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy meeting in October.
He also welcomed the establishment of APG financing facility network, which will enhance cross-border flows of foreign direct investments and new funding opportunities for regional energy-related projects.
On the Asean Economic Community Blueprint 2025, Tengku Zafrul said the blueprint has an overall implementation rate of 97%.
'This year marks another pivotal milestone for Asean, as we prepare to launch the successor to the AEC Blueprint, which is the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026-2030,' he added.
The AEC Strategic Plan 2026-2030 will be launched today.

Asean must reaffirm commitment to Myanmar's humanitarian crisis

AS Asean Foreign ministers gather in Kuala Lumpur from July 8 to 11, 2025, Mercy Malaysia renews its call for Asean to reaffirm its commitment to the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar, particularly the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian access to all communities affected by conflict. The Five-Point Consensus, adopted by Asean in 2021, remains the clearest pathway toward regional peace and stability in Myanmar. Yet its implementation remains uneven. Mercy Malaysia urges Asean to match political will with principled action, especially in ensuring that humanitarian aid is not subjected to delay, obstruction, or politicisation.

Chicken rice chain hails Sabah government's poultry decision

Published on: Saturday, July 05, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 05, 2025 Text Size: Hon said if Sabah's poultry industry could develop in a large-scale, standardised, and Halal-compliant manner, it would not only meet the growing demands of local Muslim consumers but also position Sabah for Asean and Middle Eastern markets. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government's decision to position poultry farming as a core pillar of its agricultural revolution reflects both foresight and firm commitment to food security. This initiative also brings renewed hope and opportunities for local food industry players, said the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah. MCCC has been actively promoting the development of the local agricultural value chain and food production sector. Advertisement Committee member and founder of the A1 Chicken Rice restaurant chain, Benny Hon Fook Peng, said the vision outlined by State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan to make Sabah the largest poultry-producing State is a strategically significant move. It would not only enhance Sabah's food security but also offer broad and long-term development potential for local F&B operators and rural communities. 'As players in the F&B sector, we've long struggled with volatile costs, inconsistent supply and heavy reliance on external sources. 'This policy direction is expected to boost local poultry supply, encourage more stable pricing mechanisms, and build a more resilient supply chain,' Hon said. He noted that consistent supply and quality of chicken meat are critical factors for the sustainability of chicken rice businesses. 'As a local chicken rice operator in Sabah, if we can obtain a steady supply of high-quality poultry – especially meat that meets Halal certification standards – we'll be able to maintain food quality and pricing while better serving a diverse customer base. 'Chicken rice may seem like a humble dish, but behind it lies the livelihood of countless business owners and daily consumers. What we serve is not just a meal – it is job creation, community economic stimulation, Halal food culture promotion, and a reflection of Sabah's warm and hospitable spirit.' Hon said if Sabah's poultry industry could develop in a large-scale, standardised, and Halal-compliant manner, it would not only meet the growing demands of local Muslim consumers but also position Sabah for Asean and Middle Eastern markets. 'It will create a new economic ecosystem around poultry farming including processing, cold-chain logistics, feed production, packaging, veterinary services, and more. As a committee member of MCCC Sabah, he also urged the Government to maintain close dialogue with industry players and business chambers when rolling out policies. 'For policies to take root, they must be grounded in reality. 'We hope the government will address the operational challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and introduce support such as financing assistance, smallholder training, Halal certification guidance, market linkage platforms, and logistics subsidies ensuring benefits at all levels.' He said MCCC Sabah will continue to play its role as a bridge, helping member companies connect with government resources, training opportunities, and Halal compliance standards. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PM Anwar to champion multilateralism at BRICS Summit in Brazil

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to highlight the critical role of multilateralism and Malaysia's dedication to fostering a balanced, inclusive world order at the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The summit, scheduled for July 6-7, will see Anwar addressing key global challenges, including economic cooperation, artificial intelligence governance, and climate action. Acting Head of Mission at the Malaysian embassy in Brasilia, Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat, confirmed that Anwar will deliver two key statements during the summit. The first, titled 'Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence,' will be presented during the session for BRICS partner countries on Sunday. The second, focusing on 'Environment, COP30 and Global Health,' will be delivered on Monday. Mohammad Ali noted that these interventions align with Malaysia's commitment to amplifying the voices of developing nations within global platforms. 'The Prime Minister will stress the need for constructive dialogue and inclusive collaboration, as BRICS serves as a crucial platform for addressing shared challenges like sustainable development and global stability,' he said. Anwar's participation follows his official visit to France and marks his second trip to Brazil, having previously attended the G20 Summit as a guest last year. Both visits were at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia aims to strengthen ties between ASEAN and BRICS to enhance regional economic cooperation. The summit's theme, 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,' resonates with Malaysia's priorities, including digital transformation, AI governance, and equitable trade. Malaysia officially became a BRICS Partner Country on January 1 this year, joining other nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, and Thailand. The BRICS bloc, initially comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded to include South Africa, Egypt, Iran, and the UAE, among others. During his visit, Anwar is also scheduled to meet with Brazil's aerospace giant Embraer, underscoring potential economic collaborations. His delegation includes Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil has grown significantly, reaching RM20.35 billion in 2024, a 14.6% increase from the previous year. Key Malaysian exports include electrical and electronic products, rubber goods, and palm oil-based items, while imports from Brazil feature metalliferous ores, halal meat, and crude petroleum. 'Brazil remains a vital trading partner in Latin America, particularly for E&E and rubber products. Our collaboration in food security and green energy will also be a focus,' Mohammad Ali added. Rio de Janeiro, the host city, is famed for its scenic landmarks, vibrant culture, and the world-renowned Carnaval, making it a fitting backdrop for discussions on global cooperation. -BERNAMA
