From Taylor Swift to Bianca Censori: Ye's years of controversies
Ye, formerly Kanye West, is no stranger to controversy, from crashing Taylor Swift's MTV speech to his high-profile relationships.
John Legend is slamming his former friend and ex-mentor Ye for his "anti-Blackness" and "antisemitism."
In an interview published in British outlet The Times of London on May 10, the "Ordinary People" singer slammed the Chicago rapper while recounting the roots of their personal and professional relationship.
"Kanye was very passionate, very gifted, and he had big dreams not only for himself but also for all the people around him," Legend said of the artist, whose birth name is Kanye West. "He had so much optimism, so much creativity. It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now."
"I didn't see a hint of what we're seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution," Legend continued during the talk with the Times. "I don't think we're qualified to psychoanalyze him, but after his mother passed in 2007, there was definitely a difference.
Legend said that "his descent started" after Ye's beloved mother and Chicago State University professor Donda West died in 2007 and "seems to have accelerated recently."
USA TODAY reached out to representatives for Ye for a response, but has not received a comment.
Ye says he still supports Trump, calls John Legend a 'sellout': 'I still got a red hat on'
Ye's controversial behavior has raised eyebrows in recent years. In February, he took to X in a tirade against Jews in a series of posts (before temporarily deleting his account) and, in an ad, he directed Super Bowl viewers to his website (which is now down) where the only item he was selling was a $20 T-shirt featuring a swastika.
During the Times of London interview, Legend looked back on the release of Ye's debut album "The College Dropout" in 2004 and his own first album "Get Lifted" later that year, which came out after he signed to Ye's label G.O.O.D. Music.
"Kanye blew up after producing Jay-Z's album 'The Blueprint' in 2001," Legend told the outlet. "Then he experienced a buzz as a solo artist and the whole time I was travelling with him, doing shows with him, getting exposure not only as his singer and keyboard player but also as an artist myself."
He added, "I had been turned down by labels everywhere. Then, 'The College Dropout' sold 400,000 copies in its first week, everyone wanted to know what was happening in our camp, and all those people who turned me down suddenly decided that my music sounded a lot better than it did the first time round."
Legend, Ye fell out over latter's support of Donald Trump
In 2020, West himself "ran for president" and appeared on the ballot in 12 states.
Then, Legend famously feuded with Ye in 2021 and 2022 after Ye came out in support of President Donald Trump and his Make America Great Again agenda.
After the fact, Ye claimed Legend and well-known Detroit rapper Big Sean turned on him after his support for Trump.
"Both John Legend and Big Sean, when I ran for office, got used quick by the Democrats to come at they boy that actually changed they life. … I don't rock with neither of them, and I need my apologies," the rapper said during an appearance on Revolt's "Drink Champs" podcast in 2021.
"I'm not really saying anything shocking, you know John Legend gone always show up and do whatever them folks tell him to do," Ye added in the "Drink Champs" interview. "That's not a shocking thing, man."

Kate Middleton Faces Dramatic Cancer Update After Going to ‘Hell & Back' With ‘Seriously Ill' Health
Kate Middleton is 'fortunate' to survive her 'seriously ill' cancer diagnosis, according to a royal source. An insider told the Daily Mail in June 2025 that while Kate, who went 'to hell and back' with her cancer diagnosis, is still a 'work in progress' amid her recovery, the experience has given her a lot of 'mental clarity' around her priorities as member of the British royal family. More from StyleCaster Kate Gives Subtle Update on Her Royal Future After Reports She's 'Fortunate' to Survive Her 'Seriously Ill' Cancer Diagnosis William & Kate Finally Confirm New Family Member After Reports of Their '4th Child' 'On some levels I actually think this is a good reminder that she was really seriously ill last year and underwent a significant period of chemo. As anyone who has been through that experience will tell you, you can feel very unwell for a long time afterwards. It can take years [to recover],' the insider said. According to the Daily Mail, Kate's cancer treatment included abdominal surgery followed by preventative chemotherapy involving a 'port' that was surgically fitted to administer the chemo. 'I can say that, from what I understand, she is fortunate to even be speaking of recovery,' royal correspondent Rebecca English told the Daily update to Kate's cancer recovery came after she mysteriously skipped the 2025 Royal Ascot, where she was set to attend with her husband Prince William, at the last minute. According to the Daily Beast, Kate was originally set to attend Wimbledon in June and July 2025, as well as a meet and greet for a French state visit at Windsor Castle on July 8 followed by a retreat to Norfolk in the summer, however, those plans may change as her cancer recovery becomes more serious. 'The important thing here is Kate's recovery. It was too much, unfortunately, for her to have three appearances in under a week, and the lesson has been learned. Kate will take it much easier for the rest of the year. I'd be surprised if you see her more than three times in the next three months,' a source told the Daily Beast. Another source added, 'Kate is recalibrating her entire life, her entire work-life balance. [Ascot] was a wakeup call, not a one-off. She has never found the public appearances, and the forensic attention and criticism that goes with them, at all easy to deal with, and it was just too much this week.' Along with her cancer diagnosis, the source explained that Kate's past year has also been 'horrific' due to the public fallout between William and his brother, Prince Harry, as well as her father-in-law King Charles' own cancer diagnosis. 'The last few years have been horrific; the disgusting things that Harry said about her and William and her family, the relentless speculation about her and William, the queen's death, the king's diagnosis which had them both thinking they were going to have to take over and then her own cancer diagnosis and treatment. It's all taken its toll, and if she needs more time to recover, William will fight tooth and nail to see she is given it,' the insider said. Kate first announced she was diagnosed with cancer in a video statement in March 2024, in which she revealed that she was in the 'early stages' of preventative chemotherapy. The announcement came after she underwent an abdominal surgery in January 2024. 'At the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous,' she said in the video. 'The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.' She continued, 'As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.' Kate announced that she was done with chemotherapy in September 2024. 'Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,' she said in a social media post at the time. 'I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.' She confirmed that she was in full remission from cancer in January 2025. 'I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year,' Kate wrote on social media. 'My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn't have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.' Kanye West's Australian visa revoked over ‘Heil Hitler' song, official says
Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, will no longer be able to enter Australia after releasing a song that praises Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Tony Burke, Australia's home affairs minister, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. on Wednesday that the country had canceled his visa in early May, around the time 'Heil Hitler' was released. Ye has visited the country frequently since marrying Bianca Censori, who is from Melbourne. 'If someone argued that antisemitism was rational, I would not let them come here,' Burke said. '[Ye] has been coming to Australia for a long time … and he's made a lot of offensive comments.' The song proved to be the final strike for Ye. First shared in a social media post on X, 'Heil Hitler' as been widely denounced for its racial epithets and antisemitism. It was also subsequently banned on most streaming platforms. In the song, Ye sampled an infamous speech made by Hitler in 1935 at Krupp Factory, two years after he was appointed chancellor of the Nazi party. Its music video, released May 8, shows a group of individuals dressed in animal skins reciting the song's lyrics. Ye's behavior has long been controversial, but his antisemitism in recent years has put former colleagues in an awkward position. John Legend, whose 2013 effort 'Love in the Future' was executive produced by Ye, had a clear response in a recent interview. 'It never affects me personally, but just the whole story is sad. Like, seeing this guy praise Hitler, seeing this guy be this force of hate and just vitriol and nastiness,' Legend said during an appearance on New York's Hot 97 radio show. 'All the things he's done to make the world more beautiful and interesting, for him to be this now, it's sad. It's just sad.' He clarified that during his time on Ye's G.O.O.D. Music label between 2004 and 2016, he never saw evidence that the rapper was 'obsessed with Hitler.' Legend added that despite Ye's recent behavior, he has no regrets over their past collaborations: 'I'm so glad we did what we did together.'

Queen Camilla Brings Back Signature Florals in Fiona Clare During Visit to Scotland With King Charles III
Queen Camilla joined her husband, King Charles III, for a trip to Scotland on Wednesday. Britain's queen consort and reigning monarch are on a tour of the country as part of Royal Week, making stops at receptions and special commemorations. For the annual visit, Queen Camilla went back into her royal wardrobe and opted for a dress courtesy of one of her go-to designers: Fiona Clare. The queen consort re-wore a floral dress, with long sleeves, rounded shoulders and a slightly flared skirt. The dress featured a base fabric of cream with cascading florals in shades of blue, pink and fuchsia running down the fabric. Finishing touches included coordinated pearl earrings and a pair of Chanel cap toe suede satin low heel pumps in beige and black — another staple piece of the queen consort's wardrobe. While attending the commemoration for a memorial stone for Queen Elizabeth II in St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Queen Camilla wrapped up in a coat by Anna Valentine, one of her other favorite designers. Queen Camilla previously wore this Fiona Clare design last May. The queen styled the frock for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Canada House in London. The High Commission of Canada in the U.K. officially opened on June 29, 1925, by King George V, King Charles' maternal great-grandfather. The queen consort also replicated this look from last year's trip to Scotland in July 2024. The British royal family member wore the dress for a celebration of individuals who promote Scottish Literacy at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh exactly one year ago.
