In 2025, YouTube celebrates its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of revolutionizing how we share and consume video content. We celebrate this milestone with a little known fact about the first Black woman artist to upload her music video to the platform. Find out who the singer is inside.
From its humble beginnings with the first-ever video, 'Me at the zoo,' uploaded by co-founder Jawed Karim in 2005, YouTube has grown into a global platform hosting over 20 billion videos and facilitating more than 20 million uploads daily, according to statistics gathered by Tube Filter .
As we reflect on YouTube's impactful journey, it's essential to honor the trailblazers who paved the way for diverse voices in the digital space. Among them is Goapele, a beloved R&B artist whose music video for 'Closer' holds the distinction of being the first by a Black woman uploaded to YouTube. This milestone not only showcased her glowing talent, but it also set a precedent for representation and inclusivity on the platform.
Goapele's 'Closer,' originally released in 2001, resonated with audiences for its soulful melody and poignant lyrics. By sharing her work on YouTube, she harnessed the power of the Internet to reach a broader audience. This showcased the platform's potential to democratize content distribution. (Which it absolutely has since then). The video has amassed over 24 million views since it was released 13 years ago.
In celebrating its 20th anniversary, social media has acknowledged the contributions of artists like Goapele, whose early adoption of the platform helped shape YouTube's diverse and vibrant community. Her pioneering presence highlights the importance of representation in digital media and the role YouTube has played in amplifying underrepresented voices.
As we look ahead, Goapele's legacy serves as a reminder of the transformative power of technology in the arts and the ongoing need to support and celebrate diversity in all its forms. Check out the viral post published by 'Essence of Black Culture' on Threads:

Inside the Rise of AI-Generated YouTubers (GOOGL)

One of YouTube's (GOOGL) most popular new creators isn't even human, according to CNBC. Bloo, a bright blue animated character with 2.5 million subscribers and over 700 million views, is powered by artificial intelligence. Created by longtime YouTuber Jordi van den Bussche, also known as Kwebbelkop, Bloo plays games like Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto. Van den Bussche came up with the idea after feeling burned out and unable to keep up with the pressure of content creation. Instead of using a real person or photorealistic avatar, he chose a fun, cartoon-like character. While Bloo's voice and movements are controlled by a person using motion capture, everything else is handled by AI tools. One startup, Hedra, raised $32 million to develop its Character-3 platform, which lets creators build AI-powered animated figures that speak and move in real time. Creators like comedian Jon Lajoie and virtual singer Milla Sofia are already using Character-3 to produce viral content. Google has also entered the space with Veo 3, which is an AI video generator that was trained on YouTube clips, although this led to worries about how AI might use creators' content without their permission. Nevertheless, a growing number of creators are making 'faceless' YouTube channels using only AI. One such creator, known as GoldenHand, runs up to 80 channels and releases around 80 videos a day, mostly aimed at older viewers. His process involves coming up with a story idea and letting AI handle the rest: images, voiceovers, subtitles, and editing. He even launched a service called TubeChef that helps others do the same for as little as $18 a month. While critics worry about low-quality 'AI slop' flooding the internet, others argue this content simply meets audience demand. Is Google Stock a Good Buy? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on GOOGL stock based on 29 Buys and nine Holds assigned in the past three months. Furthermore, the average GOOGL price target of $199.77 per share implies 12% upside potential from current levels.

The Future of Digital TV Is ‘Traditional Talent,' Says Adam Faze, Gymnasium Co-Founder.

Adam Faze, Co-Founder of Gymnasium, details his company's strategy of operating as a 'digital television studio' that produces high-quality, short-form, unscripted series for social platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Faze identified a market opportunity to elevate the user-generated content standard on these platforms by applying traditional television formats and production values. He illustrates this success with the viral origin story of their show Keep the Meter Running, which became an overnight, hyper-local hit in New York City from an account with zero followers, proving that the 'water cooler' conversation of television has migrated to digital spaces. Faze explains that Gymnasium's talent strategy bypasses established influencers, instead focusing on discovering 'traditional talent' from comedy clubs and other real-world settings who would have been the faces of networks like MTV two decades ago. Looking forward, he offers a counterintuitive take on artificial intelligence in entertainment. He contends that while Hollywood studios debate AI's use, a younger generation of creators is already integrating it into their workflows. The true disruption, Faze argues, is not that studios will use AI to replace filmmakers, but that AI will empower individual filmmakers to create blockbuster-level content independently, thereby bypassing the studio system entirely.
