Tensions flare in Tembisa over electricity charges as residents clash with police

News246 days ago
Violent protests have erupted in Tembisa as residents block roads and pelt police with stones over new electricity tariffs and flat-rate charges by the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
Residents demand the cancellation of increased municipal bills, reconnection of electricity supply, and scrapping of additional monthly charges that was not sanctioned by Nersa.
Some residents were prevented from leaving the area because of blocked roads that prevented access to home, work and crèches.
There is a tense stand-off between residents and police in Phomolong, Tembisa with locals blocking roads with burning tyres and debris following an electricity hike by the City of Ekurhuleni.
Protesters also hurled rocks and other debris at police who were attempting to clear the area.
Civilians attempting to access the area were turned away, including local residents trying to reach their homes.
Protests erupted on Sunday night in response to imposed tariffs and monthly charges implemented by the City of Ekurhuleni on electricity bills.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza is expected to address the aggrieved residents in the afternoon.
No flat rate increase
Thabiso Selepe, a resident, voiced his frustration saying they were against the additional flat rate charges introduced by the municipality on top of the recent Nersa-approved tariff increase that took effect from 1 July.
'We don't have a problem with Nersa's rate hike, but the municipal flat rate must be scrapped. The municipality must cancel it. We were never consulted, and they don't respect us. They must also scrap all municipal bills and reconnect electricity for those whose supply was disconnected,' he said.
The municipality added a 13.4% increase in addition to the Nersa charge.
Paulina Mthombeni was among several residents denied access to Phomolong.
She was returning from a night shift and, along with others, was accused of opposing the protest by going to work.
'I couldn't reach my home. I watched from a distance as residents clashed with the police,' she said.
Another resident, Tracy Gumede, raised concerns about her child's safety.
'I was called from work to collect my child from the crèche, but I couldn't get there because the roads are blockaded,' she said.
'I live in Phomolong, but they won't let me in, ' she complained.
Gumede said she wasn't aware of the planned protest.
'I left early in the morning, and everything was quiet. There were no signs of a protest. I share the same frustrations as my neighbours, but I had to go earn a living.'

KZN cops arrest three suspected poachers found with rhino horn and two unlicensed rifles

Three suspected poachers were arrested in Paulpietersburg on Saturday. They allegedly accosted and tied up security guards and robbed them of a shotgun. They are expected to appear in court on charges of armed robbery, rhino poaching, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested three suspected poachers who were found in possession of two unlicensed rifles and a rhino horn in Paulpietersburg on Saturday. It's alleged that the men, aged between 34 and 50, entered a game reserve and stormed up to two security guards while wearing face masks. They tied up the guards and robbed them of a shotgun, an R5 assault rifle, as well as their cellphones in the early hours of Friday morning. They then proceeded to shoot a rhino and remove its horn. They fled the scene, leaving behind the shotgun, next to the rhino carcass. According to KZN police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, when they arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled the game reserve. 'Police members, together with private security personnel, worked tirelessly throughout the day looking for the suspects. With assistance from community members, the suspects were eventually arrested as they took refuge in the bush,' he said. The suspects were found with an R5 rifle, a 303-calibre rifle, and a rhino horn. Magwaza added that the vehicle in which they were traveling was also seized by the police. The suspects were charged with armed robbery, rhino poaching, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear at the Vryheid Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Scots Do Not Hold Back While Showing Trump How They Really Feel About The President's Visit

Donald Trump has, in his usual fashion, caused an enormous stir after touching down in Scotland on Friday. The US president managed to play golf at his course on the Scottish coast on Saturday without being disturbed, but protests at his presence were erupting across the country. Trump and his son Eric played on Turnberry, the family course they've had for a decade, with US ambassador to the UK Warren Stephens. Meanwhile, more than 100 miles away, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the US Consulate in Edinburgh, making it plain that Trump was not at all welcome. Many also lashed out at UK prime minister Keir Starmer for striking up a new trade deal with Trump in a bid to avoid US tariffs on foreign imports. Trump is set to meet with Starmer, Scotland's first minister John Swinney and EU chief Ursula von der Leyen during his five-day trip, while also making time to visit his second golf club in the region. Demonstrators rallied together ahead of his visit, with Pro-Palestine campaigners, environmental activists and pro-Ukraine groups uniting to create a loose group called the 'Stop Trump Coalition'. During Saturday's protests, some people brought bagpipes, while others wore outfits from the dystopian world of The Handmaid's Tale. One protester told broadcasters: 'We should not be opening Scotland or the UK to somebody with Trump's background. 'Trump is an abhorrent human being with no saving graces.' The left-wing, pro-independent newspaper The National also joined in with their Friday front page which featured Trump's mug shot and the headline: 'Convicted US felon to arrive in Scotland.' Amid backlash online, the newspaper then asked which part of their front page is factually inaccurate. Others got... a little more personal... Some really lent into their Scottish dialect to make sure the insults hit home.... Large crowds gathered with handwritten placards... Related...
