Latest Sales Data Reveal Clear Winners And Losers in a Messy EV Market

The second quarter of 2025 painted a chaotic picture of the electric vehicle market in the United States. While General Motors enjoyed a breakout quarter, most other automakers, especially Tesla and Ford, stumbled hard. EV sales are now a mix of breakthroughs and breakdowns.
And all of this is happening under a White House that has turned decisively against green subsidies.
Despite a political environment hostile to clean energy, GM managed to deliver a stunning 111% increase in EV sales compared to the same quarter last year, moving 46,280 electric vehicles. The Detroit automaker's investment in new models appears to be paying off.
GM now commands an estimated 13% share of the U.S. EV market and is emerging as a real contender to Tesla's long-standing dominance. Many analysts attribute this rise to both product quality and a growing consumer backlash against Tesla CEO Elon Musk's polarizing political activities.
'Tesla, the market leader for years, is now clearly in retreat. The company delivered 384,122 vehicles globally in Q2, a 13.5% decline year-over-year. U.S. sales fell an estimated 16.7% to 125,000 units.
Industry experts say Tesla's troubles go beyond competition. Musk's involvement in Donald Trump's administration, as head of the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has alienated many liberal and progressive buyers who once made up a key slice of Tesla's customer base.
Ford's EV division didn't fare much better. The company's electric vehicle sales dropped 31.4% in Q2, totaling just 16,438 units. Key models like the F-150 Lightning and the E-Transit van were down 26% and 88% respectively.
Even Ford's best-performing EV, the Mustang Mach-E, saw a 20% decline. A stop-sale order during the quarter due to a safety recall involving over 317,000 vehicles further dented Ford's EV momentum.
Toyota continues to gain ground but largely on the back of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It sold 320,817 'electrified vehicles' in Q2, up nearly 30% from a year ago. But only a small fraction of that total consists of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Hyundai and Kia reported steep declines
Both companies declined to share sales data for other electric models like the Kona EV and Niro EV.
The shifting landscape also extended to the newer, 'disruptive' electric vehicle manufacturers. Rivian, known for its electric trucks and SUVs, delivered 10,661 units in the second quarter, marking a 22% decline from a year ago. While this drop might seem concerning, Rivian stated that its production was intentionally limited during this period to prepare for the launch of its 2026 model year vehicles later in July.
In contrast, luxury EV maker Lucid saw a notable increase in deliveries, soaring 38% to 3,309 units in Q2. This marks a new record for Lucid's quarterly deliveries and its seventh consecutive quarter of increased handovers.
The real wildcard in this turbulent market is federal policy. President Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' signed into law on July 4, will end the $7,500 federal tax credit for new EVs and the $4,000 credit for used EVs on September 30. Those subsidies were cornerstones of the Biden-era Inflation Reduction Act and helped power EV adoption across the country.
The bill also slashes incentives for rooftop solar, heat pumps, and other green energy products, and removes fuel-efficiency penalties for automakers.
As the expiration date looms, many industry watchers expect a rush of purchases in Q3 as consumers scramble to lock in discounts. But after September?
That's the real test.
The EV market is entering a period of uncertainty. GM is rising. Tesla is falling. Ford is scrambling. And the federal government is pulling back its support. If Q2 was a mess, Q3 could be a feeding frenzy, and Q4 a reckoning.

Since Jamie had a retirement plan with his ex-wife, he now has to create a new one for himself. That means he'll need to calculate a new 'retirement number' — the target amount you need to live the life you want in retirement. A rule of thumb is to save 10 to 12 times your final salary. That number should take into account the age at which he wants to retire, his annual salary, his expenses and savings, as well as investment portfolio performance. If he waits to claim his benefit after the age of 65, Jamie will see his payments increase by 0.7% each month — or 8.4% per year — up to 42% by age 70. While his savings may be depleted, Jamie still has a pension, Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA). It's important to review your existing retirement accounts and understand how divorce will impact the division of those assets. This can be made more complicated because the rules on dividing pensions and assets vary from province to province, so it's a good idea to consult a divorce lawyer and financial advisor. During a divorce, traditional pension plans, such as CPP, are subject to provincial division laws. For instance, in Ontario and British Columbia, the money incurred can be divided equally between spouses or even allocated based on other factors determined by the court, such as the duration of the relationship, date of separation, as well as eligibility and entitlement. Funds that you've contributed during the course of your marriage to a RRSP are considered marital property in most provinces, although each has their own rules on how the funds are allocated during the separation process. For a regular RRSP, contributions made by the plan holder using their own income would not typically be subject to division. However, any instance of growth or increase in the value of the RRSP during the marriage may be subject to division. Thankfully, any contributions to a TFSA are typically not subject to division, as each spouse is able to retain their right to their individual assets accumulated throughout the marriage. Once you have a new retirement number in mind and understand how much you'll have left over after divvying up your retirement assets, you can come up with a new retirement savings strategy. This should also factor in at what age you plan to claim your CPP retirement benefit. For someone in their late 50s, it's harder to catch up — you won't benefit from the power of compounding — but it's not impossible to cobble together some savings. Jamie may need to cut back and live on less so he can direct as much as he can into savings. He may want to start by building up an emergency fund (to cover about three to six months of expenses) and paying down any high-interest debt. From there, he can start rebuilding his retirement savings. That includes maxing out his RRSP, especially if his employer matches his contributions. The maximum contribution limit for a RRSP in 2025 is $32,490. Additionally, any unused contribution room from previous years can also be added to your limit in the current year. Jamie may also want to work with his financial advisor to explore his investment options and optimize his portfolio to meet his new goals. After several years of condo owners struggling, Florida lawmakers passed a new bill in June aimed at providing some relief for condo owners. Notably, it allows for a two-year pause in reserve contributions in order to prioritize any critical repairs identified during a milestone inspection. For condo owners in buildings that don't have major repairs to undertake, these measures may make remaining in their home a more affordable proposition. But for condo owners in buildings with critical and expensive repairs required, the costs might still be a challenge for owners. US deports eight men to South Sudan after legal battle

The US has deported eight people to South Sudan following a legal battle that saw them diverted to Djibouti for several weeks. The men - convicted of crimes including murder, sexual assault and robbery - had either completed or were near the end of their prison sentences. Only one of the eight is from South Sudan. The rest are nationals of Myanmar, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and Mexico. US officials said most of their home countries had refused to accept them. The Trump administration is working to expand its deportations to third countries. It has deported people to El Salvador and Costa Rica. Rwanda has confirmed discussions and Benin, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini and Moldova have been named in media reports as potential partners. Tricia McLaughlin from the department of homeland security called the South Sudan deportation a victory over "activist judges". A photo provided by homeland security to CBS News, the BBC's US partner, showed the men shackled by both hands and feet on the plane. Officials did not say whether the South Sudanese government had detained them or what their fate would be. The country remains unstable and is on the brink of civil war, with the US State Department warning against travel because of "crime, kidnapping and armed conflict". The eight had initially been flown out of the US in May, but their plane was diverted to Djibouti after US district judge Brian Murphy in Massachusetts blocked the deportation. He had ruled that migrants being deported to third countries must be given notice and a chance to speak with an asylum officer. But last week, the Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration and overturned Murphy's ruling. On Thursday, the Supreme Court confirmed that Murphy could no longer require due process hearings, allowing the deportations to proceed. Lawyers then asked another judge to intervene but he ultimately ruled that only Judge Murphy had jurisdiction. Judge Murphy then said he had no authority to stop the removals due to the Supreme Court's "binding" decision. Earlier this year, secretary of state Marco Rubio revoked all visas for South Sudanese passport holders, citing the country's past refusal to accept deported nationals.
