Police did not immediately make details of the shooting public, but the source told Reuters that one of the four victims confirmed to have died was an off-duty New York Police Department officer. The three other victims known to have been shot to death were civilians.
Separately, the NYPD said on the social media platform X that the gunman turned up dead.
Other news media outlets reported that the slain NYPD officer was working paid security detail for the building at the time.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a video message posted on X there were 'multiple injuries' in the shooting.
A short time later, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on X: 'At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.'
The New York Post newspaper, citing law enforcement sources, reported a gunman wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle had opened fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper, killing five people, including an NYPD officer, before turning the weapon on himself. The Post said six other people were injured.
At one point during the violence, the gunman had barricaded himself inside the office tower, possibly on the 32nd floor of the building, according to the Post.
CNN reported the police officer and three civilians were slain, in addition to the shooter.
Several news outlets, including CNN, the New York Post and NBC News, said the suspect was tentatively identified as a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas.
A photo of the suspect that CNN said was shared by police showing a gunman walking into the building carrying a rifle was published by a number of major news media outlets. Preliminary checks of the suspect's background did not show a significant criminal history, the report added, citing officials.
The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue houses offices of a number of financial institutions, including Blackstone and KPMG, along with the NFL headquarters.
Authorities have said nothing about a possible motive for the shootings.
A large police presence converged on the area around the tower, according to Reuters journalists near the scene.
'I just saw a lot of commotion and cops and people screaming,' said Russ McGee, a 31-year-old sports bettor who was working out in a gym adjacent to the skyscraper, told Reuters in an interview near the scene.
The FBI said agents from its New York field office were also responding to provide support at the scene.

Yoon has denied any wrongdoing and his lawyers have accused prosecutors of conducting a politically-motivated witch hunt. The former president has repeatedly rejected requests by prosecutors to appear for questioning, citing health issues. His lawyers said on Thursday that he was unwell due to preexisting conditions, including a condition that meant there was a risk of him losing his eyesight. In a reference to Yoon's position as a former top prosecutor, Oh, the spokesperson for the special prosecution, said the case was being closely scrutinised by the public. 'The suspect has consistently highlighted the importance of laws, principles, fairness and common sense and through this case people are watching if the law applies equally to everyone,' Oh said. Separately, investigators requested that Yoon's wife Kim, who has also denied any wrongdoing, attend questioning on August 6. Kim's lawyers have said she would cooperate with the investigation.

UN says DRC rebels killed scores of farmers, M23 suggests 'smear'
An M23 rebel attack on farmers and other civilians in east Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) killed 169 people earlier this month, a UN body told Reuters, in what would be one of the deadliest incidents since the Rwanda-backed group's resurgence. M23 leader Bertrand Bisimwa told Reuters it would investigate but the report could be a "smear campaign". The U.N. rights body's account has not been previously reported and emerged as US President Donald Trump's administration pushes for peace between DRC and Rwanda that it hopes will unlock billions in mineral investments. Reuters has not been able to independently confirm the killings but a local activist cited witnesses as describing M23 combatants using guns and machetes to kill scores of civilians. The M23 and Congolese government have pledged to work towards peace by August 18 after the rebels this year seized more territory than ever before in fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands more. According to findings by the UN Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO), which monitors DRC, the M23 operation that led to the farmers' killings began on July 9 in the Rutshuru territory of North Kivu province.

Donald Trump considering a pardon for Diddy
It appears that President Donald Trump may be considering giving rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs a 'get out of jail free card.' These reports follow two months after the rapper was found guilty of two counts of prostitution. Despite the seemingly good news for the rapper, the pardoning may not be set in stone just yet. On 17 May 2024, CNN released footage showing Diddy physically assaulting singer Cassie in a hotel hallway in Los Angeles. Just two days later, Diddy posted an apology video, but the damage had already been done. Public perception had shifted and the seriousness of the incident was widely acknowledged. On 16 September 2024, Diddy was arrested at his hotel in Manhattan following a grand jury indictment. The next day, he faced court charges for sex-trafficking, racketeering, and transportation of prostitution. By November of the same year, over 100 additional assault allegations had surfaced against him. The trial commenced on 12 May 2025, with Diddy pleading not guilty to the charges. By 2 July 2025, the verdict was in: he was acquitted of the more severe charges of racketeering and sex-trafficking. But, he was found guilty on two counts related to transportation for prostitution. The trail continues as everyone awaits the sentencing details. May 2025 was the first time President Trump hinted at the possibility of pardoning Diddy during the rapper's sex-trafficking trial. While speaking at the Oval Office, President Trump said the following: I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don't like me, it wouldn't have any impact on me. The final part of the statement appeared important to add seeing as the president was unsure of whether his relationship with the rapper was still on good terms following his first election. Recent reports, however, suggest that President Trump may be staying true to his word as he considers pardoning Diddy. An administration source told Deadline that the president is 'seriously considering' pardoning the rapper. It's still unclear which way President Trump is leaning, but we can expect to find out at the end of Diddy's trial later this year.
