The government has launched a plan to modernise the delivery of essential services, aiming to make it easier for citizens to conduct administrative tasks with the state.
This initiative is outlined in the Roadmap for the Digital Transformation of Government, which provides a strategic plan for enhancing government services through investment in digital public infrastructure.
Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi welcomed the roadmap's launch at the Gallagher Convention Centre on May 12.
'With this roadmap, we are moving from a fragmented past to a unified, people-first, whole-of-government approach,' Malatsi stated. 'This roadmap is more than just a plan to use technology, it is a transformative vision to fundamentally change how citizens interact with their government.'

The roadmap supports the digital transformation pillar of phase two of Operation Vulindlela, which President Cyril Ramaphosa initiated on May 7 this year. It aims to fulfill the Government of National Unity's commitment to inclusive growth, efficient service delivery, and ensuring that all South Africans can access government services.
As a flagship initiative of the 7th administration, the roadmap is based on Digital Public Infrastructure principles, focusing on delivering integrated public services safely, securely, and seamlessly. At its core, the roadmap seeks to establish a 'one person, one government, one touch' system – a single, trusted platform that connects citizens to services.
Collectively, these initiatives will help us achieve our vision of an inclusive, secure, and people-centred digital government. 'Together, they will demonstrate to the world what we mean by 'one person, one government, one touch.' Our goal is to ensure that citizens have a convenient, cost-effective, reliable, and user-friendly digital experience with government services.'

The Inter-Departmental Working Group, co-chaired by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and National Treasury, will collaborate with various government departments to implement the initiatives outlined in the roadmap.
These initiatives include the rollout of a Digital Identity System for remote identity verification, the creation of a Data Exchange Framework to streamline government processes, the introduction of a Digital Payments System for secure transactions, and a zero-rated Digital Services Platform that allows citizens to access government services without incurring data charges.

For ordinary South Africans, this means that tasks such as renewing a driver's licence, applying for social grants, or accessing health records will become simpler, faster, and more affordable.
The roadmap is not just about modernising systems, it is about reclaiming people's time, reducing the cost of accessing services, and ensuring that government services operate as efficiently as the best private sector platforms.

Errol Langton – an Afrikaner 'refugee' now living in the US – has shared an update about his life abroad. Almost three months ago, Langton was one of 49 white South Africans who applied for the refugee resettlement programme. In February, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order, granting refuge to Afrikaners or 'minorities', over his claims of 'racial discrimination' in South Africa. A second group of South Africans have since departed, with many more expected to follow. Speaking to US intel expert Chris Wyatt, 'Afrikaner refugee' Errol Langton shared an update about his life in his adoptive country. The IT businessman, who also owned a 'leafy green' farm, now lives in Birmingham, Alabama. In a clip posted on social media, Langton detailed the joys and challenges of the resettlement programme. Although his family members did not have social security numbers or a driver's license, they were covered by Medicaid for the first year of their stay. He also revealed how they had been temporarily provided financial assistance. Langton praised the 'efficient' government systems, particularly the healthcare. Despite the backlash of being labelled an 'Afrikaner refugee,' Langton revealed he had encountered helpful and friendly Americans. He said, 'People are very accommodating. People here want to help, they see the need, and they don't treat you like a leper. 'The kids have a good life here'. Of his frustrations, he said: 'The reality is that we're resettling our entire lives, and that's a huge challenge. There are some frustrations, but I downplay them, because I look at the positive'. During the clip, Errol Langton also addressed the backlash he's received after portraying himself as an 'Afrikaner refugee'. He said: 'I've been roasted in South Africa. People have said I'm not an Afrikaner, I'm not a farmer. It's not the case at all. The rhetoric and hate from that side is insane. Speaking to the New York Times, Langton claimed that he was a 'leafy greens' farmer from KwaZulu-Natal. Speaking to eNCA's Annika Larson in June, Errol Langton rubbished reports that the group of 'refugees' consisted of white South African farmers. He said: 'That was never the mandate. It was minorities that were suffering persecution'. Of his own identity, he said: 'Yes, I'm an Afrikaner, yes, I'm a farmer. But by everybody else's decision? Maybe not so much'. Apex Court's surprise ruling extends Makate's Please Call Me Battle

Image: Supplied FOR nearly two decades, South Africans have watched the legal saga between Vodacom and its former employee, Nkosana Makate, unfold like a courtroom drama with no final act. The latest twist, a unanimous Constitutional Court judgment handed down on Thursday, has reignited public interest and legal debate. In a development that stunned many legal observers and defied predictions of finality, the apex court has remitted the case back to the Supreme Court of Appeal. It will now be reconsidered by a freshly constituted bench. This move injects fresh uncertainty into a saga long believed to be approaching its conclusion. But what does this mean, and why does it matter? It is important to clarify that Makate's original idea was a simple yet powerful proposition: a mobile user with no airtime should be able to 'buzz' another user, prompting them to call back. Vodacom, recognising the creativity, developed the concept into the now-famous "Please Call Me" free message. This version allowed for costless transmission and universal utility. That difference matters, especially when assessing the various compensation models, which have ranged from employee-equivalent remuneration to revenue-sharing frameworks. The Supreme Court of Appeal had previously affirmed the Gauteng High Court's decision in Makate's favour and went further, controversially substituting its own compensation formula and awarding Makate 5 to 7.5 percent of Please Call Me revenue. Vodacom challenged this ruling, arguing that the SCA overstepped its bounds as an appellate court, particularly because Makate had not lodged a cross-appeal. The Constitutional Court, being the highest court in the land, granted Vodacom leave to appeal and upheld its challenge. Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, writing for a unanimous bench in what is widely regarded as his swan judgment before retirement, agreed. The Constitutional Court held that the SCA had impermissibly ventured into terrain that required a cross-appeal and had disregarded the true issues before it. This resulted in a failure of justice, specifically a breach of Vodacom's right to a fair public hearing as guaranteed under section 34 of the Constitution. The Constitutional Court has directed that the case return to the SCA, where a different panel of judges will now consider it afresh. It marks a rare judicial reset in a case that has already passed through every major court in the country. The legal significance of this moment cannot be overstated. The Constitutional Court has reinforced the boundaries of appellate authority and revived critical scrutiny around the quantum of fair compensation. The referral order compels the SCA to take a fresh look, with a new bench and a sharper lens, at the determination originally made by Vodacom's CEO. That figure was R47 million, reached after extensive modelling and expert input. It followed a failed negotiation between Makate, who proposed R20.2 billion, and Vodacom, which offered R10 million. Makate has challenged the CEO's determination as woefully low, especially in light of the widespread success of the Please Call Me service. Beyond the courtroom, this case has come to represent the struggle for equitable recognition of intellectual contributions, especially by employees in corporate ecosystems. The 'Please Call Me' litigation has gripped the public imagination. It's not just because of the staggering figures involved. It speaks to something profoundly South African: the courage to claim one's voice and the power of innovation born in unlikely places. As the legal process restarts again, one hopes that the eventual outcome will honour not just the merits of law but the deeper values it serves—justice, fairness, and transformative equity.
