Fringe 2025 – Edinburgh actor returns home with solo show

Edinburgh-born actor and writer Kathryn Marper is returning to her hometown this August with her solo show 'SH*T SHOW!', which will run at PBH's Free Fringe from 2 to 24 August.
The Carlisle-based performer, who graduated with First Class Honours in Acting (Creative Performance Practice) in 2023, aims to create bold, original work that tackles difficult subjects with both humour and heart.
'SH*T SHOW!' follows Jessica, a character who struggles with therapy and her own tendency to overshare with strangers. The production is described as 'a darkly comic exploration of what happens when you're forced to confront the worst thing that ever happened to you – and discover that the person you are afterwards might be someone worth fighting for.'
Marper, who also studied HND in Musical Theatre at MGA Academy of Performing Arts, has built an impressive portfolio since graduating. She has toured the UK and internationally with Theatre in Education shows including 'Hope', 'How are You?' and 'During the War'. Her versatility as a performer has also been showcased through UK pantomime tours of 'Oliver', 'Cinderella' and 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.
A work-in-progress version of the show debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2024, receiving positive feedback and encouraging Marper to further develop the show.
Working alongside dramaturg and director Poppy Rowan, with sound by Tom Marper, Kathryn has created what she describes as 'an unflinching, funny, and ultimately hopeful look at survival, healing, and the messy business of being human – a story that every woman will recognise.'
In June, SH*T SHOW! had a successful run at Fringe Theatrefest Barnstaple receiving glowing reviews from both critics and audiences. The Fringe Theatrefest Blog described it as 'a furious feminist tour de force,' while audience members have praised it as 'powerful, impactful, raw, entertaining' and 'heartbreakingly hilarious, genius and important.'
The production comes with a content warning as it deals with serious issues including sexual assault, mental health and violence, but Marper's approach combines raw honesty with dark comedy to create a piece that audiences have found both moving and empowering.
'SH*T SHOW!' will be performed at Carbon (Room 3), 208 Cowgate, Edinburgh, daily at 7:55pm (except Mondays) from 2nd to 24th August as part of PBH's Free Fringe. The 55-minute show offers Edinburgh audiences the chance to see a powerful piece of theatre that addresses important contemporary issues while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit.
For a local performer returning to her roots, bringing such a personal and impactful show to the Edinburgh Fringe represents both a homecoming and a bold artistic statement about the power of theatre to explore our most challenging experiences with courage and hope.

Renfrewshire dance pupil and local dance school recognised in Scottish Parliament motion

Local MSP Paul O'Kane has paid tribute to "Renfrewshire's dancing queens". Renfrewshire dance pupil and her dance school have been celebrated in the Scottish Parliament. ‌ Paul O'Kane, MSP for West Scotland, commended the Dans-Scene musical theatre school and pupil Ava Morrison with a motion at Holyrood. ‌ The motion recognised Ava's impressive casting in the Scottish Ballet's production of The Nutcracker and the teaching she has received at the Johnstone-based dance school. ‌ Mr O'Kane recently met with school principal Gillian Whyte and pupil Ava to present them with a framed copy of the motion, which also marked the school's 25th anniversary. Mr O'Kane said: 'It is fantastic to see someone like Ava have her talent recognised and rewarded by being cast in such a prestigious ballet production – I'm sure the sky is the limit in terms of what she can go on and achieve in the world of dance. ‌ 'It wouldn't have been right to pay tribute to Ava without acknowledging the huge contribution Gillian Whyte has made to dancing in Renfrewshire with Dans-Scene Company. 'I'm delighted for Gillian to have her company reach the 25th anniversary milestone – she has helped nurture so many young talents and undoubtedly helped instil self-belief into many young people who want to become professional dancers.' He added: 'My motion was my way of letting Holyrood know about two of Renfrewshire's dancing queens. 'Dance schools and the volunteers who run them really add to the rich communities we live in across Renfrewshire and bring joy to young people and their families.' The motion lodged by Mr O'Kane states: 'That the parliament congratulates 10-year-old Ava Morrison on her achievement of being awarded the role of Clara in the Scottish Ballet's production of The Nutcracker; understands that in Gillian Whyte's Dans-Scene Company's 25th anniversary year, Ava and one other pupil have achieved roles within this production, which will be performed across Scotland and in parts of Newcastle; commends them for their consistent hard work and practice, which has given them this opportunity, and recognises the hard work that the dance studio has undertaken, which has been shown in its widespread successes.'

'Trolls told me my young daughter shouldn't lift weights – but I'm glad I ignored'

American mum Jes Bowen is a huge fan of fitness and wants to pass that on to her daughter. But over the years, many people told her not to allow her child to lift weights We all know hitting the gym can be good for you in many ways as weight lifting could benefit from lowering heart risk by up to 70%. But there's a lot to bear in mind when starting a weight loss journey, from good diet to regular exercise. ‌ Now one mum has the ultimate success story with her child who can lift heavier weights than most gym buffs. American mum Jes Bowen boasts over 678,000 followers on Instagram where she shares her incredible fitness journey. She empowers kids and women from teens to their golden years – and she's done just that with her daughter Brodie, who's been in the game from a young age. ‌ The Florida-based mum decided to introduce Brodie to the world of strength training and her approach helped create a space for her daughter to explore workouts in a creative and safe way. ‌ This led to the creation of the Savage Patch Kids Fitness Program, a testament to Jes's commitment to not only fostering a love for fitness within her own family but also extending that passion to others. Sadly over the years, many trolls online question the mum for allowing her tween to squat and deadlift heavy weights in the gym as it could impact her growth. But in a recent clip with her fans, the mum revealed how she ignored what everyone said. ‌ In a video, which was captioned: "Start them young," Jes showed how she let her young daughter start training around seven years ago. It shows her lifting her daughter up to the bar to do pull-ups as she joined her. A second later, it shows how far she's come with her training. It added: "Now... She's repping muscle-ups on the very same bar where she did her first pull-up." Since it was posted, it garnered a lot of attention from people who praised the mother-daughter duo. One said: "This has been the coolest family journey to watch!" While another added: "Supportive and encouraging parents raise great athletes." And a third commented: "Uuuh I love it." Someone else posted: "This is so awesome." Over on Instagram, the duo are often seeing lifting weights together and documenting their entire routine. Previously she shared a clip of her son spotting Brodie during her squat, helping her to perfect her form. The caption read: " Big Brother – (Noun). Someone who's always there when you need him, can be a superhero, a friend, sometimes annoying, but always there. Shout out to all the Big Brothers out there!"
