My Little Pony to get live action adaptation at Amazon MGM

Express Tribune16-07-2025
Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro Entertainment are developing a live-action adaptation of My Little Pony, marking the first time the popular animated franchise will appear in a non-animated feature film.
The project has been confirmed by Variety, which notes that the film is currently in early development. No director, cast, or release date has been announced, and plot details remain undisclosed.
This adaptation is part of Hasbro's broader effort to bring its toy-based properties to major studios, following live-action successes like Transformers and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
My Little Pony debuted in 1982 and has remained culturally relevant through several reboots, including Friendship Is Magic and the 2021 animated film A New Generation. The franchise also continues on Netflix through the Make Your Mark series.
While no creative team has been announced, the film is expected to feature a live-action/CGI hybrid format, in line with similar family-friendly adaptations.
The project has already sparked early buzz across fan communities, with many speculating on how the film might blend nostalgia with new storytelling aimed at today's younger audiences.
More information from Amazon MGM and Hasbro regarding casting, production schedules, and direction is expected later this year.

Magic the Gathering's Final Fantasy crossover becomes fastest-selling set with $200M in one day

Magic: The Gathering's collaboration with Final Fantasy has become the fastest-selling set in the card game's history, generating $200 million in a single day. Released on June 13 2025, the crossover was highly anticipated by Final Fantasy fans. According to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks during the company's Q2 earnings call, the set broke Magic: The Gathering's previous records, with demand exceeding supply. 'We couldn't produce enough,' Cocks said. 'It was substantially, by many, many very high double-digit percentages, ahead of any other production run we've ever done.' For comparison, Cocks noted that Magic: The Gathering's Lord of the Rings-themed set took six months to reach the same revenue figure that the Final Fantasy crossover achieved in one day. The release also reportedly brought more new players into trading card game shops in two weeks than any previous MTG set managed over a twelve-week period. This report comes despite Final Fantasy maintaining its own official trading card game, which continues to receive new sets. The Final Fantasy collaboration follows a series of Magic: The Gathering crossover releases, including partnerships with franchises such as Fallout and Transformers. Following this record-breaking release, Magic: The Gathering will launch its next non-collaboration set, Edge of Eternities, on August 1. Later this year, additional crossovers are planned with Spider-Man in September and Avatar: The Last Airbender in November.

Ike Barinholtz reportedly set to portray Elon Musk in Luca Guadagnino's AI-themed film Artificial

Ike Barinholtz is reportedly in negotiations to play tech mogul Elon Musk in Artificial, Luca Guadagnino's upcoming AI-centered feature for Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline reports. The project marks a continued collaboration between Guadagnino and the studio, following previous films such as Challengers and Bones and All. Artificial is described as a comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence. While plot details remain largely undisclosed, multiple sources suggest the film draws inspiration from the real-life events at OpenAI in 2023—particularly the brief ousting and reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman during a turbulent period for the company. Barinholtz, who recently earned his first Emmy nomination for his role as Sal Saperstein in Apple TV+'s The Studio, joins a cast that includes Andrew Garfield, Anora breakout Yura Borisov, and Cooper Koch. Monica Barbaro is also reportedly in talks for a role. The film's script was written by Simon Rich (An American Pickle), who will also produce alongside David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films, and producer Jennifer Fox. Barinholtz is well-known for his versatility in comedy, both on television and film. In addition to The Studio, he co-created Netflix's sports comedy Running Point, recently renewed for a second season, and has appeared in popular projects such as The Mindy Project, Blockers, and The Afterparty. He is represented by UTA, Artists First, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes. Artificial continues Guadagnino's streak of high-profile projects with Amazon MGM, which is also producing his upcoming drama After the Hunt—set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival and starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri. No release date for Artificial has been announced.

Critical Role video game in development, set in Exandria with new storyline

A Critical Role video game is officially in development, bringing the world of Exandria to players in a new narrative experience. The game is being developed by AdHoc Studio, an independent team formed by industry veterans from Telltale Games and Ubisoft, as reported by Variety. Critical Role, which began as a Dungeons & Dragons series and has expanded into animated projects and live shows, is moving into the gaming industry after years of requests from its audience. The announcement marks the start of a new chapter for the franchise, with the upcoming game described as a choice-driven narrative set in Exandria. AdHoc Studio's CEO Michael Choung said, 'We've known the Critical Role team for years. When we finally started kicking around ideas, it all just clicked. It made sense in the best way possible, so we're thrilled we get to team up and cause some trouble together.' Travis Willingham of Critical Role noted that fans can expect 'something unique in the world of Exandria. I think it would have to be something brand-new in terms of storyline.' While specific plot details remain under wraps, there is an indication the game may explore events between the main Critical Role campaigns to expand the universe further. Currently, the project is in the early stages of development. While no release window has been confirmed, the team aims to avoid lengthy development cycles typical of larger studios.
