Lincoln-Way East rides Cooper Johnson's five no-hit innings to win over Lincoln-Way Central. ‘Unbelievable, man.'

Chicago Tribune06-06-2025
In recent weeks, two-way sophomore standout Cooper Johnson had been limited to just one way of contributing for Lincoln-Way East.
Johnson had been serving as the team's designated hitter, but the right-hander had not pitched since May 9 due to an elbow injury.
Returning to the mound with the season on the line, he wasn't worried about the layoff.
'I went in there with confidence like I always do and felt the way I always do,' Johnson said. 'I just wanted to attack and make them put it in play.'
Johnson's comeback went much better than anyone could have anticipated. He threw five no-hit innings to lead the Griffins to a 3-0 win over Lincoln-Way Central in a Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional semifinal in New Lenox.
Johnson struck out three on his way to the win and had just one batter reach base against him via an error. It ended up being a combined one-hitter for top-seeded Lincoln-Way East (28-10) as Jake Tamer threw the final two innings for the save.
Lincoln-Way East coach John McCarthy was thrilled with how ready Johnson was for the big game.
'Cooper did a great job,' McCarthy said. 'He deserves all the credit. He was outstanding and he kept attacking the zone.'
Johnson also singled and scored, while Roosevelt recruit Danny Mackey III delivered a two-run single and Tyler Hudik added a single, a walk and a run for the Griffins, who will play at 11 a.m. Saturday in the sectional final against Providence (26-12), a 2-1 semifinal winner over Stagg on a walk-off homer by Enzo Infelise with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Toledo recruit Liam Arsich had the lone hit for fourth-seeded Lincoln-Way Central (21-11). Xavier commit Luke Mensik threw 3 2/3 strong innings in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits.
Johnson, though, was in total control, getting through five innings in just 50 pitches.
'First game back, it was all about efficiency,' he said. 'I got the job done without throwing a lot of pitches. It felt good.'
Johnson knew he was on a pitch count in his first start since the injury, so he was not upset to be pulled out of the game with a no-hitter.
'I actually told them to take me out,' Johnson said. 'We had Tamer ready in the bullpen and I knew he'd shut it down for us.'
Johnson said he felt good despite the time off. His biggest concern was whether he would be able to control his pitches.
'I knew it was going to be hard to locate my stuff the first game,' Johnson said. 'But I had it pretty well.'
Mackey, for one, was impressed.
'He was awesome,' Mackey said of Johnson. 'His first game back. He was unbelievable, man. He's going to be good. He's going to be very good.'
Mackey, meanwhile, provided all the run support Johnson would need.
Batting eighth in the order, he came up with runners on second and third and two outs in the second inning. Mackey worked an eight-pitch at-bat, fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches before ripping a two-run single up the middle.
'It was huge,' Mackey said. 'We only scored one more run after that, so if that doesn't happen, it's a totally different ballgame. It's all about preparation in that situation.
'I haven't been swinging it well lately, but I've been putting in extra work every day, and that's exactly what I've been working for.'
The same goes for Johnson, who has emerged as the Griffins' cleanup hitter and one of their top pitchers in his first varsity season.
The sophomore was ready for the challenge.
'It's just a mindset thing,' Johnson said. 'No skill-related things are going to change. You just have to have the same confidence every outing, no matter who you're playing against.'

Raiders puzzling offensive line shuffle takes another weird turn

The Las Vegas Raiders have shuffled their starting offensive line throughout training camp, but it took a weird turn on Friday. According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders had Jackson Powers-Johnson with the second team at right guard during Friday's practice. Dylan Parham and Alex Cappa served as the starters at guard for the first team on Friday, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic. Powers-Johnson, who started 14 games during his rookie campaign in 2024 and was solid, was initially competing for the starting center spot with Jordan Meredith in camp. However, the coaching staff has moved him to guard in recent days, and it looks like he was demoted to the second team on Friday. Though Las Vegas could be shuffling the offensive line to give reps to the depth piece, it's odd that Powers-Johnson is constantly switching between the starters and backups. The 22-year-old seemed like a lock to be a starter on the offensive line, but he could be competing for a spot on the unit. In 15 games last year, Powers-Johnson played 535 snaps at guard and 421 snaps at center. The Oregon product allowed just two sacks and 23 quarterback pressures, and was also a stout run blocker. A second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Powers-Johnson is expected to be a future building block on the Raiders' offensive line, but the recent rotations on the group signal that he could be fighting for a chance to start on the interior. Raiders beat writer explains possible reason behind Las Vegas' unexpected offensive line shuffle

All offseason long, offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson was expected to be the Las Vegas Raiders' starting center in his second season. The expectation made sense considering JPJ was a center in college and was solid at the position in his rookie campaign that first saw him play left guard before a switch to center and then a return to left guard to close out the season. In all, Powers-Johnson posted a Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade of 70.4 and a pass-blocking grade of 68.3 while giving up just two sacks and 23 total pressures over 633 pass-blocking snaps. However, despite all that, fellow offensive lineman Jordan Meredith has been rotating with Powers-Johnson at center in practice. And, on Thursday, Powers-Johnson played at right guard and Meredith was at center, according to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. That setup left veteran Alex Cappa on the outside looking in when it comes to the starting offensive line after he was considered the favorite for a guard spot. Bonsignore has a possible explanation for why the Raiders are taking a look at a pairing of JPJ and Meredith at guard and center. "I think it's more that they feel Jordan (Meredith) profiles better at center than guard and that JPJ can be a pro bowl level player at either spot," he wrote. Meredith made eight starts in 2024, playing at both guard spots. He was a pleasant surprise for Las Vegas, posting strong Pro Football Focus grades of 75.7 in pass-blocking and 78.4 in run-blocking. Meredith didn't give up a single sack and surrendered just nine pressures in 399 pass-blocking snaps. That said, Meredith has played zero regular-season snaps at the position during his three-year career, so center is certainly new to him. Cappa, who once looked like he'd earn a starting role earlier this offseason, was signed to a two-year, $11.01 million deal in free agency. The signing was a bit odd at the time given the fact that he wasn't really an upgrade over anyone the Raiders had vying for a starting guard role. Cappa is coming off a terrible season that saw him give up eight sacks and 51 total pressures while also garnering PFF grades of 39.7 in pass-blocking and 54.9 in run-blocking. If the JPJ-Meredith combo from Thursday's practice holds, the Raiders' starting offensive line from left to right tackle would be Kolton Miller, Dylan Parham, Meredith, JPJ and DJ Glaze. Nebraska football tight end Mac Markway out for season with torn ACL

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule gave a status update on tight end Mac Markway on Thursday. The coach officially confirmed that the tight end is out for a second season with a torn ACL. He came to Lincoln in 2024, but suffered a torn ACL injury before the start of the season. He entered the 2025 fall camp with a chance to work his way into the type end rotation. Now, it appears he has suffered another setback, as the ACL repair reportedly failed. He came to Lincoln by way of LSU, where he played limited action. He caught three passes for 16 yards in 2023. Rhule gave some information regarding the injury in his meeting with the media on Thursday. 'After the first practice, he came in and had some swelling in his knee, not until the next day,' he said. 'Unfortunately, the ACL repair failed for him. It's heartbreaking news. He's an unbelievable human. I felt terrible for him. It wasn't any one play, nothing that he even knows necessarily happened. Just some swelling. Got through the walk through that night, then came in the next morning. We got through day one, talked about him, we were really excited for what we knew he was about to do. I know the human he is and I'm excited for what he does next. I just wanted to make sure you guys heard that from me.' This is certainly unfortunate news for the program and the tight end position. Nebraska has the depth to withstand the injury, but this is the difficult part of preseason camp.
