Manhunt launched for prisoner who complained of medical emergency before fleeing van on way to court

A man is on the run from police after he claimed to be suffering from a medical emergency that forced his prison van to stop before he allegedly overpowered officers and escaped.
Police are now hunting for Jamie Cooper, 33, who is charged with assaulting a police officer and criminal damage, after he fled the van when it pulled over on a motorway on Wednesday morning.
The van, which had been taking prisoners to Lancaster magistrates' court, was on the M55 near junction two by Catforth, Preston, when he escaped, the force said. Officers said they were alerted at 8.54am.
Police say anyone who sees Mr Cooper should not approach him but call 999 immediately. He has links to Blackpool and Bolton, according to Lancashire Police.
Mr Cooper is described as 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build with short, cropped hair, and was thought to be wearing a blue coat, blue jeans and black trainers.
A spokesperson for GeoAmey, which runs prisoner transport services and was in charge of the van, said: 'We can confirm the escape of a detained person from a GeoAmey escort vehicle.
'Whilst in transit to Lancaster magistrates' court, the vehicle had to pull over on the M55 in the Catforth area to deal with an on-board medical emergency.
'The detained person involved in this emergency then overpowered and evaded the escort officers and escaped from the vehicle.
'Lancashire Police have been informed and are currently searching for the escaped prisoner.
'We have conducted an immediate de-brief already and there will be a full investigation.'
Preston Police posted on Facebook: 'We know that this may be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that incidents like these are extremely rare in Lancashire and it is something we are taking incredibly seriously.
'Searches and an investigation are ongoing, and you will see an increase in our officers in the area as they continue their inquiries.
'If you have any concerns, please do approach them as they are out and about.'
Lancashire Police declined to say which areas their search is focused on.

Police and courts will be given new powers to target suspects believed to be planning mass killings, the home secretary has announced. Yvette Cooper said the powerful new tools would ensure the planning of mass attacks was taken "as seriously as terrorism". The new powers, including the ability to apprehend suspects before they carry out attacks, aim to "close the gap" between terror suspects, who can be jailed for life for planning attacks, and individuals not driven by a particular ideology. Ms Cooper told BBC Radio 4's State of Terror series: 'There is a gap in the law around the planning of mass attacks that can be just as serious (as terrorism) in their implications for communities, their impact, the devastation that they can cause and the seriousness of the crime. 'We will tighten legislation so that that is taken as seriously as terrorism.' She said legislation would be similar to that which allows police to arrest terror suspects for steps taken to prepare for an attack, such as research, which is not currently available without links to an ideological cause. 'We've seen cases of growing numbers of teenagers potentially radicalising themselves online and seeing all kinds of extremist material online in their bedrooms,' she said. 'We have to make sure that the systems can respond while not taking our eye off the ball of the more long-standing ideological threats.' Southport attacker Axel Rudakubana, who killed three girls at a dance class, is among the individuals who could have been covered by the legislation. Had police found he had been plotting a target before the attack, they could not have arrested and charged him with a serious offence because he had no ideological motive linked to the definition of terrorism.

Four injured after shotgun blasted at pub as armed cops rushed to scene
FOUR people have been injured at a horror shooting at a beloved pub. Armed police raced to the scene at 10.19pm last night, after a shotgun was discharged on the premises. 3 3 The shooting took place at the Dunkirk Hall in Leyland and left two men, one in their 20s and one in their 40s, injured. Two women, one in their 20s and one in their 50s, were also harmed in the shooting. However, police have confirmed that the four people's injuries are "minor". Lancashire Police are also treating the shooting as an "isolated incident". A spokesperson for the force said: "At 10.19pm on Friday 18th July we were called to reports of a shotgun being discharged on Dunkirk Lane, Leyland. "Armed officers attended to find a man in his 20s, a man in his 40s, a woman in her 50s, and a woman in her 20s, all with minor injuries. An investigation in underway and enquiries are ongoing. "This is being treated as an isolated incident, and we have increased reassurance patrols in the area as a precaution." The pub confirmed that it would be closing temporarily following the incident. A spokesperson for the eatery wrote on Facebook: "To all customers: Following an incident last night, both the pub and Smokies will be closed for a while today - certainly early afternoon whilst the police carry out further forensic investigations. "Just to quell any rumours no one has been seriously injured and all staff and customers are fine." Dunkirk Hall was originally a manor house, which was later converted into an office building. In 1983, the building was reopened as a pub and has remained open to customers ever since. Police are now appealing to anyone with more information about the incident to get in contact with them.
