ESPN's Bill Connelly gives detailed outlook for USC football in 2025
In a recent story, ESPN's Bill Connelly gave a detailed 2025 outlook for every Big Ten team. Here is what he had to say about USC.
"When you've gone just 15-13 in your last 28 games at USC, as Riley has since an 11-1 start, your name is going to automatically show up on "hot seat" lists. That's just the way it works. But damned if Riley isn't building his team like a guy with the best job security in the world. His Trojans' win total has fallen for two straight years, but he signed only 16 transfers, an average number in 2025, and less than half of them are seniors. He elected to stick with junior Jayden Maiava at quarterback after four solid but unspectacular starts. And despite losing quite a bit of depth from his first semi-competent defense in four years -- only 10 of 13 players with 300-plus snaps return -- he definitely didn't overdo it with portal guys.
"Riley reportedly has a pretty prohibitive buyout at the moment, and he's acting like it. Though this team does have a handful of pretty good seniors -- linebacker Eric Gentry and incoming transfers in running back Eli Sanders (New Mexico), cornerback DJ Harvey (San José State) and safety Bishop Fitzgerald (NC State) -- most of this team's best players are guys who will still have eligibility left in 2026, when members of what is currently a spectacular recruiting class come to town. Steel yourself for some serious USC hype this time next year, I guess.
"D'Anton Lynn did a nice job in his first season as defensive coordinator; the Trojans improved from 105th to 48th in defensive SP+, thanks mostly to big-play prevention and outstanding third-down defense. Safety Kamari Ramsey is the only returning starter in the secondary, but he's great, and Harvey and Fitzgerald should help. Gentry is a good playmaker at linebacker, and the addition of 330-pounder Keeshawn Silver (Kentucky) and 350-pounder Jamaal Jarrett (Georgia) up front should certainly provide some, uh, immovability. I don't expect an elite defense, but further improvement is likely.
"On offense, Maiava is a decent scrambler, Sanders and juco transfer Waymond Jordan are exciting and explosive additions, and slot receiver Makai Lemon averaged a whopping 3.0 yards per route, second in the conference.
"The line is more experienced, especially with the additions of senior transfers J'Onre Reed (Syracuse) and DJ Wingfield (Purdue), but I'm not sure about the upside there. Regardless, Riley should have enough to field another top-20 offense, develop further, win another seven or eight games and buy time for the cavalry to arrive in 2026."
While USC fans are certainly not expecting a national championship this season, another year of winning seven or eight games is certainly not what anyone is looking for. Riley and the Trojans will look to prove Connelly's projections wrong on the field this fall.

Former USC quarterback Miller Moss discusses decision to transfer to Louisville
This week, Big Ten media days took place in Las Vegas. However, the Big Ten was not the only school to hold its media days this week. Across the country in Charlotte, the ACC held its own event to kick off the 2025 football season. One of the attendees was Louisville quarterback Miller Moss, who transferred in from USC this past offseason. On Wednesday, Moss discussed the decision behind his transfer. "I think there were very specific things I was looking for in a school and an opportunity," Moss said. "I think coach [Jeff] Brohm and the University of Louisville, which, obviously, includes the program, offered a ton of that. "I think the opportunity to win and compete at a high level was certainly a part of that, and I think we absolutely have that opportunity this year. I think the ability to develop within a pro-style offense, like Chris touched on previously, was important to me. And I think just being around good and decent human beings . . . I wanted to be around good and decent human beings that cared about the right things and cared about one another, and I think I've absolutely found that within this program." After arriving at USC in 2021, Moss spent his first three years as a backup, before finally making his first start in the 2023 Holiday Bowl, ironically, against Louisville. He began his tenure as the starter with a six-touchdown performance against the Cardinals. Followed by a season-opening victory over LSU last year. However, Moss regressed as the season goes on, and was replaced by Jayden Maiava at QB for the final four games of the 2025 season. During the offseason, Moss elected to transfer to Louisville for his final season of eligibility. While he may not be wearing Cardinal and Gold anymore, Moss was class act who represented the Trojans with pride during his four years on campus. USC fans will certainly be wishing him success at Louisville this season and wherever his future takes him beyond that.

Top Five Challengers to Penn State in the Big Ten
It is no surprise that the Nittany Lions are one of the heavy favorites to win the Big Ten conference. After all, they return the bulk of their CFP semifinal team from last year. That does not mean that they will not have their challengers throughout the campaign. Therefore, it will not be easy sledding for a team that haven't yet proved they can win games when they matter. Here are the five teams most likely to challenge Penn State throughout the season and more importantly, for the Big Ten crown. 5. Washington Washington may not be on every Big Ten's radar, but if that prolific backfield improves upon the strides they made last year, they very well could be the shock team in the conference this season. With Demond Williams Jr. in his first full year as the starter, look for him to brink back a certain level of dynamism to the offense not unlike what Michael Penix Jr. offered a couple of years ago. Look for Denzel Boston to be the new Rome Odunze, with his elite catch radius and detailed route tree. Definitely don't forget about the dynamic tandem of Jonah Coleman and rising star Adam Mohammed. While Penn State and Washington do not face off in the regular season, a potential Big Ten championship game will almost certainly provide fireworks. The Huskies are ready to make waves in the Big Ten. The rest of the conference better look out. 4. Illinois Illinois won't be surprising anyone this season. After their first 10-win season in over a decade, the Illini are now on everyone's radar as a true contender. Yes, they may not have the same depth at the receiver position as last year, but with Luke Altmyer's steadying presence and calm in the clutch, Illinois can make up for it. The return of All-Big Ten first team selection Gabe Jacas off the edge is another scary proposition. The Illini may not be as fun and frisky as last year, but they'll definitely be pesky enough to stick around late into the season. Should they beat Ohio State in Week 6, the ball could be rolling for another stunning season in Champaign. 3. Michigan To some, Michigan are still somewhat of an unknown entity. They can either be the squad that upset both Ohio State and Alabama with impassioned defensive performances. Or, despite offensive reinforcements on both the recruiting and portal fronts, they still won't be able to hang tough in the brutal Big Ten. This ranking is highly contingent on No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood and his untapped potential. His upside is what makes this Michigan squad much more intriguing that last year's. Combine it with a defense filled with players with chips on their shoulders and if Sherrone Moore continues to be an inspirational leader for this squad, Michigan could be right back in the thick of the playoff as Big Ten title contenders. 2. Oregon Oregon could also be another team whose success this season could be highly varied. With former UCLA transfer Dante Moore at the helm, it will be fascinating to see his development under Dan Lanning, a coach who is quickly becoming a new "QB whisperer" in the college football landscape. What should excite Oregon fans(and subsequently scare other Big Ten fans), is the addition of Dakorien Moore to the WR corps. A freak athlete, Moore is destined to light up Big Ten scoreboards in what should be an illustrious career with the Ducks. Their defense is also going to be one of the most potent in the country, returning superstar Matayo Uiagelelei. This Oregon team could flounder, but I'm betting one what could be the most riveting new QB-WR tandem in the conference. One that will leave fans clamoring for Moore. Penn State fans should be penciling in their Week 4 Whiteout matchup as one of the most anticipated games on the slate. 1. Ohio State It's no secret that the Buckeyes will be the biggest test for this Nittany Lions squad. The last time the Nittany Lions beat the Buckeyes was way back in 2016, ironically the last time they won a Big Ten title. This year, while the matchup looks wholly different, the experience edge might not mean much in a psychological battle. And it's not as if Ohio State are lacking in the talent department. They still have Jeremiah, the undisputed best wide receiver in the nation. They now have a stellar tight end in Max Klare who will mightily benefit from teams' struggles with Smith. On the defensive side of the ball, Caleb Downs returns as the best safety in the nation as well. The Nittany Lions will travel to Columbus in Week 6, looking to vanquish their demons once and for all. Penn State fans should not be prepared for a cakewalk however.
