Sarjit calls up Danish after Hafizuddin's injury in Jincheon
First choice Hafizuddin Othman suffered a back injury during the five-match playing tour to Jincheon, South Korea from May 18-29.
Hafizuddin, who has 112 international caps, suffered the injury in the third friendly.
"Rafaizul Saini (ex-junior World Cupper) played in the fourth and fifth matches, but he was weak in defending penalty corners," said Sarjit.
"I am concerned about the goalkeeping department and have called up another goalkeeper, Danish Afnan Faizal (who played in the 2023 Junior World Cup)."
On the team's performance in Jincheon, Sarjit said: "Overall the players played well with a fast attacking game in all the five matches against the Koreans."
World No. 13 Malaysia beat world No. 14 South Korea with identical scores of 4-1 in the first two matches, but drew the next two 5-5 and 1-1 before losing 4-2 in the fifth.
The Speedy Tigers earned 23 penalty corners and converted five, while the Koreans converted five of 25 penalty corners.
Malaysia are drawn in Group B of the Nations Cup with world No. 12 New Zealand, Pakistan (No. 15) and Japan (No. 16). Group A consists of world No. 9 France, South Africa (No. 11), South Korea (No. 14) and Wales (No.18).

Knee issue continues to haunt Shah as worlds loom on the horizon
KUALA LUMPUR: National track cyclist Shah Firdaus Sahrom has yet to fully recover from a stubborn knee tendonitis issue which has been bothering him since early February. National track cycling team head coach Harnizam Basri said Shah has made good progress after undergoing daily physiotherapy sessions over the past few months but has yet to fully overcome the injury. "It is taking a long time (to heal) and it is incredibly frustrating for Shah. He is, however, doing his best to remain positive and continues to work on it," said Harnizam when contacted today (July 30). "He is working on strengthening his (right) knee by doing specific exercises under the supervision of our physiotherapist. "I would say he is about 90 per cent recovered now. The issue now is that he feels discomfort and a loss of power when his leg and knee are bent between 77 to 90 degrees. "He is fine if he is pedalling in a seated position but it affects him when he is doing out-of-seat efforts during sprints, which is not ideal for a rider like him. "I expect him to be able to compete at the World Championships later this year, the challenge is to get him in the best condition possible." Shah is expected to compete alongside younger brother Ridwan or Fadhil Zonis for Malaysia in the keirin at the World Championships in Santiago, Chile on Oct 22-26. Harnizam confirmed that Shah will not be fielded at the Thailand Track Cup next month (Aug 25) as he does not want to risk Shah aggravating the injury or, even worse, crashing. Shah, 29, had picked up the injury during a strength training session in early February. He, however, fought through the pain to race at the UCI Nations Cup in Konya, Turkiye a month later and won the keirin gold. It was his first gold individual medal in a major international competition.

Junior hockey team need more matches before World Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: The national youth hockey team are racing against time in their bid to be ready for the men's Junior World Cup (JWC) in India from Nov 28-Dec 10. Coach Nor Saiful Zaini believes his squad need at least 60 matches to be tournament-ready, but they've played just 13 so far, with four months to go. As part of their preparations, the junior Tigers will head to Perth from Aug 3-15, where they'll play six matches — three each against the Western Australian junior and senior sides. They will then travel to China to take on Liaoning in another six-match series. Following that, Malaysia will play in the prestigious Sultan of Johor Cup (SoJC) in Johor from Oct 11-18 — a six-nation tournament featuring Britain (defending champions), Australia, India, New Zealand and Ireland. Saiful will bring 22 of his 25 players to Perth, but is sweating on the fitness of two key men — Adam Ashraf Johari and Aqil Danial Mat Ruslee. Midfielder Adam, who played in the 2023 JWC in Bukit Jalil, is sidelined with a wrist injury, while defender Aqil, a mainstay during the Junior Asia Cup in Oman, is recovering from a knee injury. "The matches in Perth will give my players good exposure," said Saiful. Malaysia have been drawn in a tough Group E at the JWC alongside the Netherlands, England and Austria.
