3 killed as Colombia shaken by wave of deadly explosions amid political unrest

Southwest Colombia was rocked by a string of explosions and gun attacks that left at least three people dead on Tuesday, police said, in what appeared to be a coordinated attack designed to sow terror.
The attacks hit Cali – the country's third-largest city – and several nearby towns, targeting police stations and other municipal buildings.
The head of police, Carlos Fernando Triana told La FM radio that assailants had attacked targets with car bombs, motorcycle bombs, rifle fire and a suspected drone.
'There are two police officers dead, and a number of members of the public are also dead,' he said.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attacks, but guerillas who broke away from the once-powerful Farc militia are known to operate in the area.

Triana suggested the attacks may be linked to the third anniversary of the killing of Farc dissident leader Leider Johani Noscue, better known as 'Mayimbu.'

Uribe becomes first Colombian ex-head to be convicted, sets off ‘political earthquake'

Former president Alvaro Uribe Velez has become the first Colombian head of state to be convicted of a crime, a landmark decision expected to reverberate through the country's political system less than a year before presidential elections. A judge in Bogota ruled on Monday that Uribe, who governed from 2002 to 2010, was responsible in the first instance for bribery of witnesses and obstruction of justice after a more than 10-hour hearing. The case centres on allegations that the right-wing leader dispatched intermediaries to prisons to pressure former members of illegal armed groups into altering their testimony – retracting accusations against him and instead implicating left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda. Uribe, 73, remains a deeply divisive figure in Colombia. For some, he is a hero credited with saving the country from collapse, particularly through his military campaign against Marxist guerillas like the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). His successor, Juan Manuel Santos, later signed a peace deal with the Farc in 2016. Others, however, believe Uribe had ties to paramilitary groups who sought to undermine Colombia's democratic institutions. His military campaign was marred by the 'false positives' scandal: the killing of innocent civilians by the military, who falsely presented them as guerilla members to inflate combat statistics. While some high-ranking officers have been convicted of such crimes, Uribe has denied wrongdoing or that his policies encouraged such actions. He has also denied connections with right-wing paramilitaries.

Suspect in Michigan Walmart stabbings charged with rarely used state terrorism count

A Michigan prosecutor filed a terrorism charge on Monday against a man accused of stabbing 11 people at a Walmart shop. The charge has been rarely used in the state's courts since it was adopted more than 20 years ago during the national outrage over September 11. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg said she believes the charge fits because the weekend attack was intended to 'put fear in the entire community and to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis.' But proving that could be difficult. Bradford Gille, 42, has a history of mental health problems. A judge signed an order on Friday, the day before the attack, telling police to find him and take him to a hospital because he was considered a risk to himself or others. Police said they were unable to find him. Moeggenberg also filed attempted murder charges, one for each Walmart stabbing victim. A not-guilty plea was entered for Gille and bond was set at US$100,000. Tobacco companies are 'selling cigarettes with fibreglass and chemicals in 'em just to kill off the population. You can't really accuse me of anything if you're doing that', Gille said in court. Police investigate the scene where 11 people were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan on Sunday. 2 wounded in Greece bomb blast that targeted prison guard's home

A bomb explosion targeted the home of the president of the Greek association of prison guards early on Saturday morning in the country's north. The guard, named Konstantinos Varsamis on the association's website, was left unharmed after about 3kg (about 6.6 pounds) of explosives went off at 2.10am, police said. The explosives were placed outside his apartment building's front door in Sykies, a suburb in the northern city of Thessaloniki, where he lives on the first floor, according to authorities. The blast damaged three apartment buildings, shattering their windows and collapsing a shared wall. 'I woke up because of the very loud bang of the explosion,' Tzetno Kelo, 52, who lives in an adjacent apartment building, said. 'Shattered glass from a window fell on my bed and I was covered in blood.' He was treated at a hospital before being discharged. A view of the site where a bomb exploded.
