Big Ten's Petitti: No support for SEC's at-large bid preference for College Football Playoff

Big Ten's Petitti: No support for SEC's at-large bid preference for College Football Playoff

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Big Ten commissioner doubled down on the league's preference for multiple automatic qualifiers in the next version of the College Football Playoff on Tuesday, increasing the likelihood of a showdown with the Southeastern Conference when the format for 2026 is decided.
At the league's football media days, Tony Petitti said any change that adds at-large bids and increases the discretion and role of a selection committee — a format the SEC and others have shown a preference for — 'will have a difficult time getting support of the Big Ten.'
Petitti also bolstered the idea of a weekend's worth of conference play-in games for some of the four automatic bids that would go to the Big Ten in its preferred version of a 16-team playoff, even though the games could put some of the Big Ten's top-seeded teams in jeopardy of being shut out of the CFP.
The likely slate for that would include a league title game between Nos. 1 and 2 and play-in games involving the 3-6 seeds.
'There are 18 members in the Big Ten, you have 17 possible opponents and you play nine,' Petitti said. 'There's a lot of discrepancy. Let alone making comparisons across leagues, there's a lot of issues about how you compare teams inside the Big Ten. ... Where we came down is we were willing to take that risk.'
Though there is a Dec. 1 deadline for expanding the playoff for 2026, Petitti said he wouldn't put any deadline on it, echoing a sentiment SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey voiced earlier this month when he said the 12-team format, which went into effect last season, could stay in place until the two leagues agree on something new.
Petitti said recent meetings between Big Ten and SEC athletic directors have produced good results and he expects another such summit would do the same.
'The goal would be to bring people back together, have a conversation about what we think works, then kind of go from there,' he said.
The Big Ten and SEC will ultimately decide the new format, with input from the Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conferences, along with Notre Dame and the six smaller conferences that are part of the system.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said his preference was a format with five automatic bids and the rest at-large.
'Fairness and access should also be part of the equation,' Phillips said Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina,, while backing the work of the selection committee that would have a bigger role with 11 at-large selections to sort through.

Tua Tagovailoa reveals where Tyreek Hill stands with Dolphins after cryptic ‘I'm out' comments

Tua Tagovailoa can forgive, but he won't soon forget. The Dolphins quarterback revealed Wednesday that star receiver Tyreek Hill is working to rebuild relationships with his teammates after he shockingly declared, 'I'm out,' at the end of last season before walking back on the startling remarks. 'When you say something like that, you don't just come back from that with a, 'Hey, my bad,'' Tagovailoa told reporters at training camp, according to CBS Miami's Mike Cugno and NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. 5 Tua Tagovailoa (1) and Tyreek Hill (10) during Dolphins practice in 2022. AP 'You gotta work that relationship up, you gotta build everything up again, and it's still a work in progress. Not just for me, but for everybody. Like I said, he's working on himself, he's working on the things he says he wants to get better with and do better on, so, that's the first step to me and so, I commend him for doing that.' Since arriving in Miami in 2022 following a trade with the Chiefs, Hill, 31, has established a rapport with Tagovailoa, 27, often going to bat for the former first-round pick against Dolphins detractors. The Pro Bowl wideout eclipsed 1,700 receiving yards in his first two seasons with the Dolphins and reached the playoffs both times, falling short in the wild-card round. 5 Tyreek Hill has been catching passes from Tua Tagovailoa since arriving in Miami in 2022. AP Although there was optimism entering the 2024 campaign as the Dolphins extended Tagovailoa on a four-year, $212.4 million deal, things quickly spiraled as the regular season got underway. Tagovailoa was sidelined for several weeks after experiencing another mid-game concussion in a Week 2 loss to the Bills. The QB suffered two concussions during the 2022 season. The losses continued to pile up entering Week 8, when Tagovailoa returned, but late-season pushes weren't enough to bolster Miami's playoff hopes as the team wrapped the year at 8-9. 5 Tua Tagovailoa in action at Dolphins minicamp in June 2025. AP Hill, who appeared in all 17 games and fell just shy of 1,000 receiving yards (959), stirred controversy after the team's season-finale loss to the Jets on Jan. 5 by suggesting he wanted out of South Beach. 'What y'all had heard at the end of the season was frustration,' Hill said after the remarks went viral. 'I've been winning my whole life, bruh. Y'all don't understand, I bust my ass every day. I deserve to feel like that; I deserve to have some kind of opinion.' Hill later doubled down on his adoration for Tagovailoa with a 'public apology tour.' 5 Tua Tagovailoa spoke about Tyreek Hill rebuilding relationships with his teammates on July 23, 2025. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images 'Tua is my guy, he always will be my guy no matter what,' Hill said in February on 'Up & Adams.' 'He understands my frustration. We all want to win. Tua he's another competitor, he's a hell of a competitor, a lot of people don't know that. He's a winner, he's consistent, so I'm looking forward to us continuing to build our relationship. And this is my public apology tour. I love you, bro.' It's been a controversial 12 months for Hill, who was detained by police before a Week 1 win over the Jaguars last September. He was later embroiled in a domestic dispute with his estranged wife, Keeta Hill, who filed for divorce in April. 5 Tyreek Hill (10), here on July 23, 2025, is entering his fourth season with the Dolphins. AP Hill practiced at training camp Wednesday as the Dolphins look ahead to the upcoming season. When they take the field in Week 1 against the Colts on Sept. 7, it'll be without cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith, who were dealt to the Steelers in a June blockbuster, with Miami acquiring safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in return.

Dylan Raiola likens relationship with Patrick Mahomes to Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan

Before he ever took a snap at the college level, the comparisons were unavoidable for Dylan Raiola. Between his position, No. 15 jersey number, his hair and, at times, his playing style, the Nebraska quarterback has been frequently linked to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. It's not a connection that Raiola shies away from. If anything, he embraces it — so much so that he has a historical comparison for it. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten college football power rankings start with Penn State, Ohio State In an interview with the Cover 3 Podcast on July 22 at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, Raiola likened the way he views and tries to emulate Mahomes to Kobe Bryant's relationship with Michael Jordan. 'I'm not comparing myself to Kobe or anything, but like Kobe did to Mike, that's kind of what it is for me to Patrick,' Raiola said. 'He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now, if not the best. Just for me to be able to have someone to look up to, talk, call, whatever…the comparisons are kind of everything outside. I can't control that god made me look like this, play the same sport. It's all love.' Nebraska's Dylan Raiola On his relationship with Patrick Mahomes:"What Kobe did to Mike, That's kind of what it is for me to Patrick" #BigTenMediaDays #Nebraska #dylanraiola Over the course of his legendary NBA career, Bryant became perhaps the closest thing the sport had seen to Jordan since his retirement, emulating his game, mannerisms, trademark intensity and even hairstyle, trading in his baby afro for a shaved head. One year into his college career, Raiola has taken the same kind of approach with Mahomes, opting for a similar haircut and wearing a headband during games. Before a win last season against Colorado, Raiola generated widespread attention on social media for mimicking Mahomes' pregame routine. Raiola trains with quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen and trainer Bobby Stroupe, both of whom worked with Mahomes on his rise to NFL stardom. The comparison, of course, has its limits. Beyond their follicle choices, the two don't look all that much alike (Mahomes is mixed, with a white mother and Black father, while Raiola is of Polynesian descent). More glaringly, one of the quarterbacks is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL MVP while the other is a 20 year old who threw 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions for a team that went 3-6 in the Big Ten last season. The tie between the two is more than superficial, though. Mahomes and Raiola have struck up a relationship, with Raiola noting the two call and text one another. Last year, Mahomes shouted out Raiola on social media, referring to him as 'Lil cuzzo.' In about a month, there will be one more data point between the two — Raiola and Nebraska will open their 2025 season at Arrowhead Stadium against Cincinnati on August 28.

Atletico Madrid to sign defender David Hancko after Al-Nassr reportedly backs out

MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid has reached a deal to sign David Hancko after the defender reportedly was turned away by Al-Nassr when he arrived at the Saudi team's training camp. Atletico said Wednesday it has an agreement with Dutch club Feyenoord for the transfer of the Slovak player. The deal was pending a medical, and financial details were not disclosed. Spanish and Dutch media said Feyenoord had originally reached an agreement with Al-Nassr for Hancko's transfer, but the Saudi team — where Cristiano Ronaldo plays — reportedly backed away at the last minute. The defender had already arrived in Austria, where Al-Nassr was training, but was told there by Al-Nassr that the deal fell apart. Atletico, the third-place finisher in the Spanish league last season, has been boosting its squad in recent weeks. It signed 22-year-old right back Marc Pubill from Almeria, 24-year-old Argentina international Thiago Almada from Brazilian club Botafogo, midfielder Álex Baena from Villarreal and 22-year-old Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta. ___
