Midweek cool down and weekend storm

Yahoo25-02-2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – More cities and town across New Mexico will see more record and near-record breaking high temperatures this afternoon. However, a backdoor cold front will be returning us to milder highs tomorrow.
New Mexico remains under a ridge of high pressure this afternoon. The center of the high pressure is currently to the south over Mexico. The ridging is bringing New Mexico another day of record and near record breaking temperatures, and sunny skies.
Forecast Continues Below
Crime: Thief returns stolen crystal to the store it was taken from in Albuquerque
News Insiders: Are There ICE Raids Happening In New Mexico?
Traffic: BernCo issues hundreds of citations on road with new speed camera
Overnight, an upper level short wave trough will begin to move over New Mexico. Along with the trough, a backdoor cold front will move through eastern and central New Mexico. This cold front will bring temperatures across the state back down to mild levels. The cool down will last through Thursday.
Along with a brief cool down, the upper level shortwave trough will be bringing light rain to parts of southern New Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday. A band of precipitation will stretch from the Gila to the Sacramento mountains.
A weekend storm is on its way to New Mexico. However, there is a bit of uncertainty in the forecast. A low pressure system will make its way over Arizona late this week. The American model has the low pressure tracking north near the four-corners over the weekend. This track keeps precipitation minimal and only in the north. The European model has the low tracking south towards the Gila and the bootheel. This track will bring more widespread precipitation across the state.
