From a young age, Haas was taught to treat his surroundings with pride.
Tasks such as making his bed each morning and taking out the garbage bins were non-negotiables.
Haas also revealed he 'saw things' some kids shouldn't see - and he won't allow his two younger brothers or own young children to be exposed to similar negative environments.
A generational footy talent, the prop made his NRL debut as a teenager in 2018 with the Broncos, and is now arguably the best front-rower in the game alongside Kiwi international Joe Tapine.
Away from footy, Haas has endured more than most in recent years.

With both his parents incarcerated, Haas quickly became the family provider.
A father of two, Haas is now also the legal guardian of his younger siblings Hans and Geejay - who he is determined to see stay on the right path.
'I don't want them to see the things that I saw as a kid,' Haas previously told News Corp.
'I do get sad for my brothers. It's been hard on them to deal with all this, but I'm just blessed that (partner) Leilani is so understanding.
'I'm lucky that I'm in a good spot now where I can actually help them, give them a head start in life.'
Haas has also embraced his - at times - chaotic life.
'I love being a father and being around my family. I don't really do much outside of footy these days,' he said.
'Some people might think it's boring, but with what I've had to take on, the most important job in my life now is being a good person and mentor for them and then footy comes after that.

A man accused of stealing 'a communal crime car' used in an arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue has been arrested and charged, with Victoria police also alleging he blocked detectives from accessing apps on his phone. The attack on the ultra-Orthodox Adass Israel synagogue in December is still being investigated as a politically motivated attack by the Victorian joint counter-terrorism team, which includes representatives from the federal police and the domestic spy agency, Asio. The man, 20, was arrested in the Melbourne suburb of Williamstown on Wednesday and has been charged with theft of a blue VW Golf in November, which police allege was later used by those involved in the attack on the Adass Israel synagogue and other crime. Leaders of the Adass community were briefed on the situation by senior members of Victoria police, including lead investigators, shortly after the arrest on Wednesday. They have been briefed on an almost weekly basis. So far, police have not arrested anyone accused of ordering or carrying out the attack. On Thursday, the Age reported the investigation had 'stalled', in part due to the use of encrypted technology concealing the identities of those involved. Victoria police did not comment on the use of encrypted technology, but said the investigation remained a priority and was still being investigated as a likely terrorist attack. After the arrest, police searched a home in the suburb of Melton South, where detectives seized 'items subject to further investigation'. Previously described as a 'communal crime car' by police, officials say the vehicle was also used in an arson attack at the Lux nightclub in Melbourne's South Yarra in November as well as a shooting in Bundoora the same night as the synagogue fire. The nightclub fire and shooting are being investigated by Victoria police and are not considered politically motivated. The car has also been linked to 'a number of serious and violent crimes' including aggravated burglaries and 'petrol drive-offs' in Brunswick, Cranbourne North, Caulfield South and Hampton. In May, police said that car had been fitted with cloned plates. Police said the footage then showed 'three individuals dressed in hoodies and masks get out of the vehicle and use an axe to damage the entrance of the synagogue', and 'at least two individuals commence pouring the contents of red jerry cans inside the entrance of the synagogue, before entering the building'. 'It shows the individuals making multiple trips to the Golf to get more jerry cans, which were poured inside the synagogue before the liquid was ignited.' Police allege one person recorded the attack on their phone. The 20-year-old man was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on 3 October.

A Commonwealth Bank executive accused of grooming underage girls for sex has died. Christopher James McCann, 50, appeared in Brisbane Arrest Court last Monday to apply for bail after being charged with one count of using the internet to procure children aged under 16. The Sydney-based McCann was extradited to Queensland on Thursday night after being arrested by NSW Police. He was found dead at Springbrook yesterday. Queensland Police Service are not treating his death as suspicious. 'A report will be prepared for the Coroner following the non-suspicious death of a man at Springbrook yesterday,' a spokeswoman said in a statement. McCann described himself online as a corporate finance executive with more than 20 years of experience. Magistrate Louise Shephard told McCann he was accused of a 'terribly serious offence' by allegedly engaging Brisbane sex worker Shauntelle Elizabeth Went, 18, to supply the services of two girls aged 14 or 15. 'You travelled interstate frequently. You formed some kind of connection with (Went). On May 14 police intercepted messages between you and she. 'The allegation is you ... queried her about whether she had younger friends that she worked with.' McCann stood in the dock looking either down or straight ahead during his appearance. Ms Shephard said McCann was accused of making an arrangement and agreeing on price to use Went's services alongside two underage girls. 'Later the evening Went and the girls attended (a Brisbane CBD five-star hotel),' Ms Shephard said. 'The two girls went to the room and you contacted the front desk to ask them to leave. It is not alleged the girls entered the room. 'The matter was referred by NSW Police to Task Force Argos (Queensland Police child exploitation unit) and on July 8 they executed a search warrant on your home.' A prosecutor opposed bail based on the risk of McCann offending while on bail and the risk to the welfare of the community. 'He lives in NSW. He is a flight risk. He has financial capacity from his previous employment,' the prosecutor said. Ms Shephard said McCann's employment had been terminated.

Libertarian MP John Ruddick has pledged to launch a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Mark Latham's $1million legal bill, after he was found to have defamed Sydney MP Alex Greenwich in a graphic and homophobic tweet. 'If Mark Latham is forced into bankruptcy, I'll start a GoFundMe,' Ruddick told Chris Smith on 2SM radio on Thursday morning. 'I'm going to ask 10,000 people to pay $100, that's a million dollars. And if there's anything left over, we'll throw a big Mark Latham party.' Latham, now an Independent MLC, was ordered to pay $140,000 in damages and an estimated $600,000 in legal costs following a Federal Court ruling in 2024. Any sitting MP who is declared bankrupt is required to vacate their seat under the NSW Constitution. Ruddick praised Latham as 'a giant of the NSW Legislative Council' in the wake of an unfolding scandal over lewd text messages he sent to his former partner Nathalie Matthews, some allegedly sent from the Parliament floor. 'Half the country wanted him to be Prime Minister not that long ago,' he said. 'In state Parliament, there's a lot of technical stuff, Mark is across it all. He's making a serious, valuable contribution.' Ruddick also praised Latham's sharp debating style, deep understanding of legislation, and ability to command attention in the chamber. 'When Mark gets up, everyone stops what they're doing. They listen,' he said. He also joked if she might want to be involved in a 'freak off', a another term used by infamous rapper Sean Diddy Coombs for a threesome.
