Wrexham's Australia tour diary, part 2: James McClean on Melbourne Victory, jetlag, and snubbing cricket

New York Times2 days ago
Wrexham are Down Under for pre-season, taking on a trio of A-League clubs as the build-up continues towards the opening game of their Championship campaign on August 9, away at Southampton.
After starting the tour with a 3-0 victory over grand final runners-up Melbourne Victory in front of a 37,020 crowd at the Marvel Stadium, Sydney FC are next up on Tuesday at the 42,500-capacity Allianz Stadium. A clash with Wellington Phoenix will then round off the tour on Saturday.
To keep fans across what's going on in Australia and New Zealand, The Athletic is publishing a diary of the tour with members of the travelling party. After manager Phil Parkinson gave his thoughts in part one, today it's the turn of captain James McClean…
I'd never been to Australia before. To be honest, it was never on the bucket list for me. Too far away. So, the fact I'm here with the club has allowed me to tick a box, as I'd probably never have made it here.
We've been looked after well since we got to Melbourne. Training has been good, including the facilities. The gaffer (Phil Parkinson) also likes the lads to experience different things on these tours, so we've been out and about in between training.

A few went to the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), but cricket isn't for me. A sport I have zero interest in. Never, ever excited me, so I decided to give it a miss. Same with the AFL game the lads went to tonight between Carlton Football Club and Brisbane Lions at the Marvel Stadium.
Instead, I went out for some food. The lads who went had a great time. They all came back saying how good the experience had been. I'm sure they enjoyed it, but again, it's not a sport I watch.
Boxing is a sport I love, which is why I was in the boxing gym within a few hours of us arriving in Australia. It was always my plan. Something to keep me ticking over. It was the first thing I Googled when we were told where we were going in pre-season.
In the end, the gym actually got in touch with me. I know a few people in the boxing game, so that probably helped. They invited me along and I was more than happy to accept.
The first game of the tour against Melbourne Victory was grand. Good to get up and running, especially in terms of match sharpness and getting some minutes in the legs. The gaffer selected a different team to start in each half and I thought the lads did well in both.
We won the game 3-0 with goals from Tom O'Connor, Ryan Hardie and George Evans. But the main thing was getting the minutes in the legs. That's what pre-season is for.
The crowd was amazing — 37,020. That's for a pre-season friendly on the other side of the world, remember. We enjoy playing in new stadiums, and particularly big stadiums like the one here in Melbourne, but it makes it an even better experience for the lads to play in front of so many fans.
A travel day, as we swapped Melbourne for Sydney, the second stop on the tour.
We've been acting the tourist a bit and Sydney seems a lovely place. We visited the Sydney Opera House, among a few other sights. We didn't go in but were down in that area, which was great.
We're here in the Australian winter, so the weather wasn't the best during our few days in Melbourne. It was cold, it was wet, and the weather was a bit dull. A bit like being back home, really. I was saying to the lads, 'It's like travelling 21 hours to go home.'

Since getting to Sydney, though, the weather has been a bit brighter. That always helps and I've been enjoying it.
I'm still battling the jetlag a bit, even though we've been here a week now. I'll probably find by the time we go home, I'll just about have beaten it!
What I can't fault are the training facilities. They are so important on a trip like this. In Sydney, we're using the New South Wales Rugby League centre of excellence.
It's right next to the stadium where we'll be playing Sydney FC and we've even had the chance to throw a few rugby balls around as part of training. Again, we've been looked after really, really well. We couldn't ask for any more.
For me, the lads are looking in great shape. We've been worked hard and I think we're in a good place. The games help in that hugely, which is why we're all looking forward to tomorrow night's match.
This afternoon saw the launch of the new away kit, which included a few of the lads heading to Ultra Football in Sydney. At one stage, there must have been more than 300 fans queuing to get a photo with me, Arthur Okonkwo and Tom O'Connor.
Again, it shows the level of support the club has. We're looking forward to playing in front of those fans again tomorrow night. I'd imagine the game will be similar to Melbourne Victory.
I'm expecting them to be nice and tidy on the ball. Very technical, but again, the big thing for us is getting minutes under our belt. That said, we also want to win the game.
It doesn't matter whether it's a friendly or professional game, this group always wants to win. Momentum is something you want as a team so we want to build on the first game in Melbourne.

SEC host believes Texas A&M is being 'overlooked\

Before Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko and his three-player representatives, junior linebacker Taurean York, senior guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, and senior cornerback Will Lee III, a host of SEC media members spoke to the TexAgs radio crew during the first two days of SEC media days this week to discuss the 2025 outlook for the Aggie football program. On Tuesday, Georgia, Texas, and Auburn took the stage, while SEC Network host Laura Rutledge spoke to TexAgs Live host David Nuño, and was one of the few media members this week who felt that Texas A&M is being highly undervalued this offseason, while cross-town rival Texas has received all the national praise. Nothing Rutledge said is new for those of you who have been paying attention, those of us who cover the program, knowing that starting quarterback Marcel Reed's improvement this offseason, paired with the returning veterans and 14 transfer portal additions, have the Aggies on the right track to compete for a College Football Playoff berth. "I don't thing enough people are talking about A&M" Rutledge stated. "I don't want to overdo this, because, I get superstitious about A&M, I have a couple best friends who are A&M fans, so, they get mad at me if I'm overhyping the team, but, I am an honorary A&M fan." Getting Rutlege's now confirmed A&M fandom out of the way, the SEC host expressed her belief in the Aggies' ability to get through what is widely seen as one of the toughest schedules in the country. "I think they're gonna be pretty good, Marcel Reed coming back, he's got way more experience under his belt, and getting thrown into the fire you saw some flashes, you saw some freshman moments, right, it's a moment of an experience, and now he's got time under his belt." Rutledge is even more confident in Texas A&M's defense improving with Mike Elko taking over as the play caller, which should help with early and late-game adjustments that were an issue last season. "I think Elko taking over the defensive play calling is big, that's hit background, his bread and butter" said Rutlege. "He is such a good coach and he has impressed me in so many ways, and I just think its, and I know A&M fans are like, "we've got to win" and this has been the story, right? There's been lot's of money spent, and how you see it actually translate, it will be better in my opinion, and there are key parts in the schedule that are really going to matter. I think they're a team that people are overlooking right now." Texas A&M will open the 2025 season against UTSA on Saturday, August 31, inside what should be a packed Kyle Field. Usyk-Dubois 2: How to watch, what's at stake, betting odds

LONDON (AP) — Daniel Dubois gets a second shot at Oleksandr Usyk and this time the stakes are higher as the winner will become the undisputed world heavyweight champion. The pair will square off at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night almost two years after their first bout, which is best remembered for a controversial low blow by Dubois. Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth round to retain his WBA, IBF and WBO belts. Victory for Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) would see the Ukrainian become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. It's a feat he first accomplished in May 2024 by beating Tyson Fury on a split decision and taking Fury's WBC belt. Usyk then relinquished his IBF belt — with Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs) the recipient — just over a year ago to focus on a rematch with Fury. The last British heavyweight to hold every major belt was Lennox Lewis 25 years ago. When is the fight? The ringwalks are expected to be at around 9:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. ET). The first fight on the undercard will begin around 5:40 p.m. What happened the first time Usyk and Dubois fought? It was held in Wroclaw, Poland, which practically speaking was home territory for Usyk, whose country is still defending itself from a Russian military invasion. The southpaw Usyk controlled the fight by using his right jab effectively, finding holes in Dubois' defense and causing the Briton's left eye to swell by the fourth round. The low blow in the fifth round remains the talking point — even this week. Dubois' punch sent Usyk to the canvas. Referee Luis Pabon had a clear view and ruled it an illegal low blow, though Dubois' camp accused Usyk of pretending to be hurt. Usyk was given nearly four minutes to recover. Usyk scored a knockdown late in the eighth round and ended it a round later with a straight right that dropped Dubois. Who have Usyk and Dubois fought recently? Since beating Dubois, Usyk secured back-to-back victories over Tyson Fury. Both fights took place in Riyadh and both went the full 12 rounds. The first was a split decision. The rematch last December was a unanimous decision. Dubois rebounded from his loss to Usyk with three wins, all by stoppages: Jarrell Miller in the 10th round; Filip Hrgovic in the eighth round; and Anthony Joshua in the fifth at Wembley. Dubois was scheduled to make a title defense against Joseph Parker in February but he backed out at the last minute citing an illness. What's at stake? So much. There is Usyk's undefeated record. The Ukrainian turns 39 in January so he's at the point of his career where every fight could be his last. Going out on top must be at least a little appealing. Plus, even though he clearly feasts on British opponents, he might not be as enthusiastic to face the likes of rising star Moses Itauma, a 20-year-old Slovakia-born British southpaw who has drawn comparisons to a young Mike Tyson. None of Itauma's past six opponents have lasted two rounds. For the 27-year-old Dubois, history awaits. He'd be the first British fighter since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to be the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Fury and Joshua have been much more heralded in their careers, but neither has been able to beat Usyk. They both fought him twice and lost. Dubois also wants to prove that his stunning knockout of Joshua last September in an IBF title defense was no fluke. Here's how to watch Usyk-Dubois It's available on DAZN pay-per-view for $59.99 in the United States, and 24.99 pounds in Britain. What are the betting odds? Usyk is the big favorite. BetMGM Sportsbook lists Usyk at 8/25, equivalent of a moneyline favorite of +312; and Dubois at 27/10 or +270. The odds on a draw are 17/1. Who is on the undercard? London's Lawrence Okolie faces Kevin Lerena of South Africa in a heavyweight bout. Okolie is a former WBO cruiserweight champion. Also: Daniel Lapin vs. Lewis Edmondson (light heavyweight), Vladyslav Sirenko vs. Solomon Dacres (heavyweight), Aadam Hamed vs. Ezequiel Gregores (super lightweight), and Lasha Guruli vs. James Francis (super lightweight) ___ AP boxing:

Gregor Townsend selects Lions-bound duo for Scotland clash with Samoa

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend revealed Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman are keen to play a full part against Samoa before heading off on British and Irish Lions duty. Townsend has selected the pair in his front row for Scotland's final summer tour encounter in Auckland on Friday. Advertisement Darcy Graham has already linked up with the Lions and Glasgow prop Sutherland and Edinburgh hooker Ashman will join him with a view to playing in next Tuesday's match against a First Nations & Pasifika XV. Townsend said: 'The fact we're playing Friday night and they can get to Melbourne on Sunday, the same time as the Lions are arriving, as long as they are available to train on Monday and be available for the game on Tuesday, there won't be any real consideration on game time. 'We hope every one of our players come through fit but Ewan and Rory were very keen to play.' Darcy Graham has joined up with the Lions (Jane Barlow/PA) Townsend was delighted with the additional Lions recognition, which took the number of Scots selected to 12, including the injured Zander Fagerson. Advertisement 'Especially for Darcy to go there now and be part of the Lions squad, building up to the first Test and then getting a really good run at potentially being involved in that midweek game,' he added. 'And the other two guys, they were buzzing when I passed on the news to them that they were going to be getting a phone call from the Lions and the players were really pleased for them as well. 'Maybe it's not in the front of their minds because they've been preparing for a Test match this week but I'm sure their focus will turn to the Lions as soon as Friday night is over.' Townsend has made five personnel changes following the 29-14 defeat by Fiji. Gregor Brown returns from injury to start in the second row while Andy Onyeama-Christie is drafted into the back row after Jamie Ritchie dropped out with a foot injury. Advertisement Rory Hutchinson and Stafford McDowall form a new centre partnership in place of Cameron Redpath and Tom Jordan, who suffered a fractured hand against Fiji. Arron Reed replaces Graham with Kyle Steyn swapping wings. Ben Muncaster is back from injury but has to settle for a place on the bench alongside uncapped Glasgow prop Fin Richardson. 'While there's a lot of changes, some of them were outwith our control,' Townsend said. 'But we've looked to put our strongest team out. We were disappointed with the result at the weekend and we want to finish this tour with a real strong performance and finish on a high from a playing point of view because off the field it's been excellent. Eden Park will host Scotland's Test against Samoa (David Davies/PA) 'We feel very privileged to be playing in such an iconic and historic stadium, Eden Park. It will be a great atmosphere, a noisy crowd, you'd mainly imagine supporting Samoa. It's one of the most iconic stadiums in world rugby. Advertisement 'A great opportunity for us to play a proper Test match in that stadium and finish the tour on a real high.' Townsend earmarked two main areas of improvement. 'The contact area,' he said. 'Just being more ruthless in that area, quicker in support, ball-carrying, working harder on the floor, just not allowing the opposition any opportunities to get the ball back. 'And our discipline. Discipline can be a number of things that the referee can call you up on, but not being offside, just giving them a bit of space, that would be the first one that we can fix.'
